    1. [PABLAIR-L] Tribune, 1858
    2. Hollidaysburg Some of our citizens are still troubled with the thieving propensity, which a few daring spirits manifest. I have to note two late operations which reflect little honor upon those engaged in them, whoever they may be, or what the circumstances under which they were forced or disposed to commit the disgraceful act may have been. One day last week, the new firm of W. H. Cannan & Co., found, upon examination, that on the evening previous, a portion of their stock of fish and bacon had disappeared. The mode in which the perpetrator, or perpetrators, obtained entrance, is supposed through a door in the lower story of the Warehouse, which had remained unlocked, and unattended to, when the building was closed for the night. Our friend and excellent Daguerreanist, Frank Proctor, had one of his beautiful pictures stolen last week. He had hung it in front of his gallery for public examination, but some unknown individual from some motive or other, very unceremoniously relieved him of it. In both those instances, the necessity for the exercise of great care and vigilance is seen, in order to avoid a like repetition. A grand and glorious (?) fight came off on Tuesday week at a low dogger the canal basin of which Mrs. M???lly is proprietress. The scene must have been bloody and disgraceful. The noses and faces of some of the participators gave unmistakable evidence of the severity of the blows administered and the animal passions called into exercise. The result of the whole affair was holding the proprietress and the three principals, over in the sum of $100 each, to keep the peace and appear to answer at the next court. Who does not desire the abolition of such groveling holes and incentives to such disturbances of the peace! The power of the law in a form unmistakable ought to be brought to bear upon such places. The offenders are now in the hands of the law, and does not true humanity and good citizenship require that they should receive the utmost penalty of their offence? On Sabbath, a fire broke out in a frame building situated on Montgomery street, near the Basin of the Canal, and destroyed the roof. The fire originated from the stove pipe. It was happily discovered before the flames had progressed far, or else, in all probability, the whole building would have been consumed. ------------------- Change of Proprietor On entering the oyster saloon, next door to the Bank, a few evenings since, we were surprised and gratified to find behind the counter, dealing out the delicious bivalves, our young friend Isaiah Taylor, late a brakesman on the Accommodation Train on the P. R. R. Having purchased the interest of the former proprietor of the saloon, Isaiah is now serving the public in a different capacity from that of brakesman viz: with fine oysters and other luxuries and from the neat appearance of things in his establishment, we think he understands his business. He was clever and accommodating in his former situation and we find him equally if not more so in his establishment. We wish him plenty of customers. ------------------------------------------------------- A Gay Lothario Pulled On Saturday officers Radabaugh arrested a gay deceiver from Altoona, charged with having betrayed and deserted a young woman of that place, who, like many others of her sex, "loved not wisely but too well." The fellow was taken to Altoona and made disposed of according to law "in such cases made and provided"--Harrisburg Telegraph Who is the "gay Lothario?" It may be all true enough, but like many other little circumstances, which occur hereabouts, we learn them first from abroad. -------------------------- Census of Hollidaysburg From the returns of the Assessor of Hollidaysburg, who took an account of the number inhabitants in connection therewith, it appears that there is an actual population of 3,175 in that town--pretty good for a "one-horse" concern. The colored population, included above, numbers 165. There are 886 children under 10 years of age. ---------------------------- Thanks Our kind friends of the "Model Store" will accept our thanks for the handsome manner in which they contributed to render our Christmas a happy one, and realize to us a portion of our dream. Their generosity shall long be remembered. But not to us alone do they exhibit their kindness. All who deal with them can bear testimony of the cheerful and accommodating spirit which actuates them and renders their store, in every particular, the model store. Our young friend, J. E. Burchinell, will accept our thanks for the fine young turkey which he dropped into our office while we were at supper on Christmas eve. He knows how acceptable such presents are, about holiday times, to poor printers. May he live long and never lack a turkey for his Christmas dinner. Our grateful acknowledgments are due a gentleman (who shall remain nameless at present) of the town "over the hill," for that tremendous big gobbler left at our door on Christmas day, by that clever fellow, "Yankee" Jones. The donor's heart is in the right place, though little did we dream, when we made honorable mention of his name, that we were to be so handsomely rewarded. We are now fully convinced that all we said about him was true. May his anticipations and our ardent wishes be fully realized in his experience. 3. Can someone tell me where Geeseytown Cemetery is? I found Geeseytown on the map and see that is off of Route 22 not too far from Frankstown. Was wondering if anyone could give me specific directions for finding the cemetery or know if it is publicly accessable or on private property? Thanks!

    3. Is there a Beckie Chamberlin on this site? She sent me an e-mail on April 13, 2002 about her step-father Kenneth Delozier Jr who had a gggrandfather named David Ball who was married to a Magdalena Kesser born 3-4-1844 in Newry PA. I am trying to find her parents who would be my gggrandparents. I did find an obit for Valentine Kesser in 1917 that mentions a sister, Mrs Lena Ball in Clearfield PA. The Valentine Kesser obit mentions children of John, William, Owen, Joseph and Annie. It lists sisters still living in 1917 as Susan Westbrook of Cumberland MD and Lena Ball of Clearfield PA. It sounds like Lena is my gr-grandmother Magdalena Kesser from Altoona. She married David Ball, they moved to Clearfield County and one of their daughters was Ida Theresa Ball who married a Richard Joseph Barry from Wales and they settled in Altoona. In other words, who were the parents of Valentine, Susan and Magdalena? Claire

Would anyone be able to help me better understand the following location descriptions: 1767 Cumberland Co. was divided into six townships Two of the twps were Bedford and Barre Africa's History of Huntingdon and Blair Counties says: Bedford: "Bounded by the the above-mentioned(above Bedford is listed Cumberland:"Bounded by Coleraine township(as above), the provincial line to the Allegeney Mountain to the top of the ridge that divides the waters of Wills Creek; from thence of Juniata to strike Dunning's Mountain through Lun's Gap")east line and Dunning's Mountain to the gap of Morrison's Cove, and from thence to the top of Tussee's Mountain(joining Barre Township) so as to include Morrison's Cove, and from the end of Morrison's cove cross by Frankstown to the Allegheny." Barre: "Bounded by Dublin, Coleraine, and Bedford townships, as already mentioned, and along the Allegany until a line struck from thence to Jack's Mountain so as to include the waters of Little Juniata and Shaver's and Standing Stone Creeks." The reason I am interested in better understanding where Bedford and Barre twps of Cumberland were exactly located is that after 1771 when Bedford Co. was erected from Cumberland Co., in 1775 Frankstown Twp of Bedford Co. was formed, and per Africa "from parts of Bedford and Barre and the boundaries fixed as follows: "Along the line dividing Bedford and Northumberland Counties from the West Branch of Susquehanna to where Little Juniata runs through Tussey's Mountain; then along the said mountain to the ridge dividing Morrison's Cove from Croyle's Cove; then along the said ridge to Dunning's Mountain; then along Dunning's Mountain to the dividing ridge between the waters of Dunnings' Creek and the southwest branch of Frankstown Branch; then along said ridge to the Allegeny Mountain; then cross the same and by the line of Quemahoning township to the line dividing Bedford and Westmoreland Counties, and by the said line and along the limits of this county to the place of beginning. This township included the whole of Blair County and the present townships of Morris, Franklin, and Warrior's Mark of Huntingdon County." So, I was thinking to better trace ancestors that were in the area of the present Tyrone, Morris, and Catharine townships(Morris and Catharine formed from Tyrone, and Tyrone formed from Frankstown), I should go back to some Bedford and Barre Twp, Cumberland Co. records. Thanks for any help on all this! Anne

    2. Dale Patterson
    3. Does anyone know if the Altoona papers published a list of Altoona area residents whose draft registration numbers were drawn in the July 20, 1917 lottery. It's my understanding that all males between 21 and 31 were required to register on June 5, 1917 in preparation for this lottery. I have seen many sites that have published this list. Thanks, Dale Patterson

The information against him was made before Alderman Stephens by Dr. J. W. Rowe, secretary of the Blair County Medical society. He will be given a hearing on Monday. ------------------------------------- Notes From the Hospital Conductor Borland Improving Rapidly, Other Cases Treated John Larris, an Italian, of 923 Ninth avenue, was treated at the hospital yesterday for a contusion of the face and hand. Philip T. Hollar, 114 East Fourth avenue, while at work in the shops yesterday suffered a painful incised wound of the left hand. He received treatment at the hospital. James T. Van Zandt, 226 Howard avenue, had a contused hand treated by Dr. W. H. Howell at the hospital yesterday. Conductor Albert Borland, the well known Pittsburg division passenger trainman, who was so badly injured at the passenger station about a month ago that it was necessary to amputate one of his legs, is recovering rapidly and is now able to move about the hospital at will. He will shortly be able to leave the institution and go home. The fractures were reduced by Dr. W. H. Howell at the hospital. John Barry, of New York city, employed as the bricklayer's helper at the new tunnel at Spruce Creek, fell from a scaffold while at work yesterday morning and suffered a sprain of he left ankle and contusions of the body. He was brought to this city and admitted to the hospital for treatment. The following minor cases were treated at the hospital yesterday: Thomas Whisler, 414 Lloyd street, burn of eye; Harry Oantz, 1792 Union avenue, burn of the left foot; Joseph Houck, 608 Seventh street, foreign body removed from the eye. ------------------ Recent Marriages Three Which Have Occurred Since Our Last Report Harrisburg Telegraph, Feb. 15 A quiet wedding took place in the study of the Reverend Curtis O. Bosserman, of the Covenant Presbyterian church, this morning, when Mr. Harry S. Weber, a popular fireman on the Altoona side of the middle division, and Miss Helen Graham, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Graham, the florist, of 2019 Cameron street, were made husband and wife. The newly wedded couple took their departure on seashore express for a visit to Philadelphia and other places. Mrs. Weber will remain with her parents for a time before the new home is established in Altoona. Webb-Gates Mr. Herman Q. A. Webb and Miss Blanche E. Gates, both of this city, were married by Alderman O'Toole at his office on Bridge street at 7 o'clock Wednesday evening. They will reside in this city. Steinberger-Riley Mr. Daniel T. Steinberger and Miss Rose Riley, both of this city, were united in marriage at St. Mark's Catholic church at 7 o'clock last evening by Rev. Father N. J. O'Reilly. They were attended by Mr. William Becker and Miss Regina Riley. Both are estimable young people and will reside in this city. ---------------------------- Money Order Department Record Breaker Yesterday (St. Valentine's Day) was a record breaker in the money order department of the Altoona postoffice. The highest number of domestic money orders heretofore issued in one day was 150, but this was far exceeded yesterday, as the following record shows: Two hundred and thirty-three domestic orders, $1,456.06; fifteen international orders, $105.26 eleven remittances received from other offices, $1,392.00; forty one orders paid, $493.88. One of the first three items the fees, including tax, were $29.39. There were sold at the stamp window cards, stamps and envelopes to the amount of $297.84. -------------------------------------------- An Entertaining Lecture Dr. F. Crisston lectured to ladies yesterday in the opera house, the audience being well pleased and this appreciation was given expression afterward in words of hearty approval. His theme was the beauty, form and physical culture of woman, and his argument was too many women think that after they are married it matters not how they look or dress. He said the reverse was the truth, and that she should take measures to be always attractive, so the husband will never cease to court his wife, even in old age. His remarks on physical culture were particularly instructive. He will lecture again this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. ---------------------------------------- Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair

    1. [PABLAIR-L] Altoona Tribune, 1887
    2. Altoona Tribune 1887 A Pronounced Success Huntingdon, Pa., November 26.----There was a final effort made to raise the amount to pay off the indebtedness of the Orphan's Home of Huntingdon county. A subscription was sent out through the newspaper circulation of the county and the children of the public schools of this place and several other schools of the county. It was a grand success, the amount realized being over $1,100. The institution has been well managed during the past five years, 116 orphan children having been admitted in that time, sixty-five of whom have been placed with families. ---------------------------------------------------- Three Huntingdon County Items Peter Miller, of Black Log valley, Huntingdon county, died suddenly the other day, aged 69 years. Joseph Deible, of Washington, brought down two wild turkeys at one shot on Monday. They weighed 18 and 16 pounds respectively. Mrs. N. B. Corbin, of Huntingdon, tripped while walking across the floor on Saturday and fell against a hot stove, badly burning both hands. ------------------------------------------------------ RECAPTURED Three of the Prisoners Who Broke Out of the Huntingdon Jail. Special to the Tribune. Huntingdon, Pa., November 30.--William Walker, Samuel Shetram and Harry Carr (colored), three of the four prisoners who effected their escape from the jail in this place by tunneling through the main wall on Tuesday morning last, are again safe behind the prison bars, Walker having been recaptured on Saturday and Shetram having surrendered himself to Sheriff McAlevy yesterday morning. Carr was also recovered by Sheriff Rhoat at Harrisburg this morning and brought back to jail. Walker is now closely confined and heavily manacled in a cell by himself, while Shetram and Carr enjoy the privilege of the corridor. To your correspondent to-day the latter garrulously related how the escape was planned and carried into execution and also what additional means were held in reserve in case the first attempt would prove abortive. It was their purpose with a large quantity of gunpowder which they had secreted in their cells to blow open the locks and doors, regardless of the personal safety of the other prisoners who were confined in the corridor immediately under them. Walker also had a loaded revolver in his possession which it is alleged by Shetram, he intended to use against Sheriff McAlevy in case he or any of his family should attempt to intercept them. It was indeed a very bold scheme, and it most fortunate for the sheriff, perhaps, that the first effort of the prisoners for liberty proved successful. Shetram said his reason for surrendering himself was that he preferred a warm cell in jail to tramping about the country a fugitive. Thomas Grove, the young man from Duncansville, Blair county, who was arrested on suspicion of being an accomplice of the notorious Walker gang of housebreakers and car robbers, who was recently bailed out of jail, has been rearrested and confined in jail on account of his bail proving of the straw order. He is confident he can prove his innocence of the charge, and alleges his readiness to show where the stolen goods found in his possession came from. He is young man of pleasant address, with open, frank countenance, and seems to be more sinned against than sinning. ----------------------------------------------------------- The Indian School at Martinsburg It was a surprise to many to see at divine services on Sunday last, in St. Luke's, a compact body of well-dressed youths, about seventy in number, two-thirds being males and all Indians. They were from Martinsburg, and were under the supervision of Mr. Breidenbaugh, their superintendent, and Mr. Skyles, Mrs. Kyler and Mrs. Livingston, instructors. Seventeen of their number were confirmed at the service, being presented to Bishop Rulison for the laying on of hands along with six deaf mute adults, and twenty-eight other postulants from the congregation of St. Luke's church. The service, which was most impressive and beautiful, included the bestowal of artistic medals, having on one side the medallion of the "Good Shepherd" and on the other an appropriate legend, by the pastor of the Indian school. The school was dined at the Logan House by the women of St. Luke's church at 1 p.m. and better behaved youths, more apt to enjoy the bountiful provision of Mr. and Mrs. Dunham could scarcely be found anywhere. At 2:30 the Indians assembled again at St. Luke's church with the usual Sunday Schools and were addressed by Bishop Rulison; Miss Lina Green, an Indian girl, who one year ago could not play a note, accompanying the hymns on an organ. Mr. Breidenbaugh, after making a pertinent address and thanking the church for the courtesy and hospitality his school had so much enjoyed, departed, leaving by special at 4 p.m. for Martinsburg. He deserves great credit in ordering so successful these wards of the nation, who are all Oneidas and Osages from the far west. The government may well aid him to the full extent of the law for he is manifestly accomplishing its purpose in making good citizens out of those who might otherwise become a burden to themselves and the government also. The institution at different points in the United States of these Indian training schools will go a long way to solving the much vexed question of what shall be done with the Indian. This line of policy adopted by the government, although a comparatively recent one, has already been productive of much good. The schools of Hampden, Va., and at Carlisle, in our own state have done much to civilize the Indian and render him a law abiding and a God fearing person. The great majority of them are quick to learn and the comparatively small amount of money spent for their education is undoubtedly well spent.
