Hello Fellow Listers: Searching for more information and ancestry of William HELLER who was married in 1846 to Rebecca _____ (b.14-Mar-1824 d.__-Dec-1895). >From the Altoona Tribune - dated 27-Dec-1895: Mrs. Rebecca HELLER died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. E.K. HAMILTON, 229 Willow avenue, at 11:15 yesterday morning after a prolonged illness. The deceased was born May 14, 1824, and was, therefore, somewhat past 71 years of age. She was married to William HELLER during the year 1846, and was the mother of eight children, but three of whom are yet living. these are: Robert S. and W. S. HELLER and Mrs. E. K. HAMILTON, all of this city. Mrs. HELLER was a consistent member of the Methodist church for more than thirty years, and at the time of her death was connected with the Walnut Avenue Methodist Episcopal church. No funeral arrangements have as yet been made. Thanks in advance! Donna HELLER ZINN of Newville, Cumberland Co., PA.
I was wondering if there is someone living in Altoona that could do me a very large favor. I would like to have photos of the graves of John G Hay and wife Catherine. I have the obit for Catherine and it says that she was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery. John died between 1920 and 1930 and Catherine died after 1930. I found an article from 1918 of a marreage record for Emil Maillard and Pearl L. Hay and that said "owing to the recent death of the bride's brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. John W. Hay, the ceremony was very quiet". John W. was the son of John G. and Catherine Hay and they may also be buried in the same cemetery. This info was a shock to me because I never knew there was a son John W. He doesn't appear in the 1910 census with his parents. I assume he was married and lived elsewhere but can't find him. Still working on that. I would be happy to pay for any cost. Thank you, Maureen

Tribune; 1886 Hunting Trip Last week we received the following from a noted hunter and trapper of McVeytown: "I would like to remind you again of the approach of a sanguinary day amongst the cotton-tails, cannonading t open on the morning of Thanks-giving day and continue until the going down of the sun. See that your powder is dry and a plentiful supply, your shot pouches full and stomach empty. Dinner will again be served by Miss Mary Pollock, who seems to know the 'weaknesses' of lean editors so as to be able to cater to their wants most perfectly." Well, we went and were joined by sixteen other stalwarts, including Rev. E. H. Mater, of McVeytown, all bent on having a grand hunt, but the beautiful snow, which commenced falling early in the morning and continued throughout the entire day, spoiled that part of the programme. On account of the inclemency of the weather but little game was found, and it was with feelings of uncommon satisfaction that the hungry and tired party drew up at the hospitable Pollock farm house, where Miss Mary, who is noted for her skill as a cook, had already prepared a grand dinner. It is needless to say that the hunters did justice to it. ------------------------------------------ A Cambria County Constable Robbed At 2 o'clock on Saturday morning Constable Hiram Kemmerer of East Taylor township, Cambria county, was robbed of $170. The officer went from Mineral Point to Johnstown, where he informed the police. He stated that at the hour indicated three men entered the furniture works, where he is a watchman, and bound and gagged him. They then proceeded to go through him for valuables. They found $170 in a pocket-book, which they appropriated. Of this amount all but two dollars was money that Mr. Kemmerer had collected on the tax duplicate from delinquent taxpayers. After securing the money the burglars took their departure, leaving him bound and gagged and prostrate on the floor, near the boilers, where he remained, unable to help himself or call for assistance, until Joseph Reighard discovered him at 6 o'clock Saturday morning. Mr. Kemmerer says the burglars were not masked, but he cannot describe them accurately, owing to the suddenness with which they pounced upon him, and the position in which they placed him after the gag and fastenings had been applied. One of them, he says, wore a slouch hat and had dark chin whiskers. --------------------------------------------- Foot Injured On Monday of last week Mary, the interesting 12 year old daughter of Edward Bell, esq., of Antis township, sustained a severe and painful injury to one of her feet. She was riding a wagon when by some means the foot was caught in one of the wheels and so badly hurt that the young lady has since been compelled to use crutches. ---------------------------------------- His Farewell Sermon Rev. M. J. Firey, who recently resigned the pastorate of the First Lutheran church and who expects to leave for his new field of labor in Ohio on Wednesday of this week, preached hi farewell sermon Sunday evening, taking for his text Hebrews XIII: 20-21. The auditorium of the church was crowded to excess and many were unable to get in. Mr. Firey is much beloved by the Lutheran people of this city, and particularly by those of the First church, who part with him with deep regret. News From Penna. Counties The ladies of the Curwensville Presbyterian Church have organized a Ladies' Home Missionary Society, also a Foreign Missionary Society. Addison Barber, of Millville, Cambria county, had the index finger of his right hand crushed while engaged at the Cambria Works on Monday. Mr. Daniel Selfridges, of Chest township, Cambria county, recently came across two young panthers. One of them he shot but the other one got away. The Trough Creek correspondent of the Huntingdon News informs us that Empraim Greenland, for many years a resident of Altoona, is almost blind. Robert Stewart, a resident of Houtzdale, celebrated his one hundredth birthday on Friday. He is in the apparent enjoyment of good health. Two of the children of H. S. Davis and wife, of Jackson township, Huntingdon county, a girl aged 8 and a boy of 4, have recently died of scarlet fever. A 2 year old child of James Patterson, of Duncannon, pulled a pot of boiling coffee from the stove and was so badly scalded that death ensued in a day or two. "Dens of iniquity" disgrace Bedford, and "brazen faced street walkers" ply their vocation in defiance of all the rules of common decency, which is sad indeed. The Directors of the Poor of Cambria county are considering the propriety of heating their almshouse by steam. The cost, it is said, will not exceed $2,800. The members of the First Presbyterian Church, Williamsport, have resolved to erect a new church edifice, the location being on the corner of Third and Mulberry streets. A dwelling house at Woodland, Clearfield county, occupied by a man named Ward, was recently destroyed by fire with most of its contents. The loss is put at $900. The wash house of David Hostetler, near Allenville, Mifflin county, occupied by a man named Ward, was destroyed by fire a few days ago, together with Mr. William Hostetler's entire winter supply of meat. Mrs. K. L. Green, of Clay township, Huntingdon county, while superintending her household affairs on Tuesday morning, sat down to rest and expired almost instantly. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Death of William Beamer William Beamer, notice of whose serious illness with tetanus has already appeared in the Tribune, died on Saturday night at the residence of his father, Solomon Beamer, Esq., in Millville. Mr. Beamer's affliction dated from an accident which occurred at Gallitzin more than a month since in which one of his fingers was mashed while he was coupling two cars of a freight train. Recently he caught cold in the wound and tetanus ensued, causing death, as stated, preceded by terrible suffering, that night. Deceased was a brother of the County Treasurer, I. F. Beamer, and leaves a wife and three children. The funeral took place Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment in Hutchinson's graveyard. Mr. Beamer was aged 31 years and 10 months all but four days. A particularly sad circumstance in connection with the death of Mr. Beamer is the infirm condition of his aged mother, which precludes a last look from her loving eyes into the face of her departed son. Friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral. Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair

Disposal of Property of Delinquent Debtors Properties at Hollidaysburg Featured by Only One Spirited Contest Sheriff Harry S. Holland this morning disposed of a number of properties of delinquent debtors at the courthouse at Hollidaysburg, the sale attracting quite a large crowd of buyers. Only one case, however, attracted any spirited bidding, this being the disposal of the interest of R. H. Colburn, administrator of Helen H. Colburn, in properties situated on Sixth avenue between Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh streets, Altoona. There was a large number of bidders for this property. The bidding starting off spiritedly, but later going for a long time while bidders raised a dollar at a time until Sheriff Holland finally neglected to hear any but $10 bids. It was finally knocked down to W. L. Woodcock for $6,000. Proceedings were stayed in two cases, while fifteen were held over for next week. Hello Abby - I have family from there and visit every year. The library does have a small genealogical area. I've not spent much time there but do plan to do so myself this summer. I was just there this weekend (in Bellwood, not the library). My grandmother actually worked there for years and a second cousin works there now! Hopefully you'll get an answer soon regarding their hours. I'm sure you're also planning to stop at the large genealogy library in Hollidaysburg... it's not to be missed! Best wishes! Linda Jones (Houser, Cramer, Patton, Rarick, Rearick, Lindemuth, Catherman) Augusta, Michigan
Hi list.... I will be visiting the Bellwood-Antis area this week-end hopefully. Is there anyone that has been to the public library there that knows if they have genealogy-related materials? I sent an email to the library but have not heard anything back from them. Are there any other places in Bellwood that would be worth a stop? Just thought I would try to make use of my time while I am there. Thanks, Abby
Hello Fellow Listers: Am searching for information on the REDKAY family - not sure where the family originated or lived. The family in question: Charles Redkay GABLER s/o John GABLER (s/o Joseph & Lydia GABLER - all bd. Orrstown Cem., Franklin Co.,PA.) and Elizabeth (maiden name to be REDKAY - also found as SWEIGERT - bd.Spring Hill Cem.,Shippensburg, PA.). Charles worked on the railroad and was living in Harrisburg, Dauphin Co., PA. on the 1920 Census with his mother. The family also lived around the Chambersburg / Orrstown / Shippensburg area. Anyone familiar with this surname or know where they were from??? Donna HELLER ZINN of Newville, Cumberland Co., PA.
