    1. [PABLAIR-L] Altoona Mirror, 1913
    2. Forty Years Service B. W. Flanagan Rounds Out Long Period in Employ of Railroad Co. Mr. B. W. Flanagan of 511 Eighteenth street, a well known employee of the Twelfth street tool room, on Saturday completed the fortieth year of his service with the Pennsylvania Railroad company, passed the day by working as usual, in the shops in the morning and quietly celebrating the anniversary at his home in the evening. Mr. Flanagan came to Altoona from Dexter, Maine, where he was born and raised, in the early part of April 1873, and, on the 19th of that month secured employment in the machine and tool room, where he has worked continuously ever since. When asked how he felt after working for one company so many years, Mr. Flanagan said that he felt like lots of other men in the Pennsy's employee who are past the age limit of usefulness fixed by Dr. Osler, "as fit as ever," and judging from the number of men employed by the company who are over that age, and the remuneration the receive, he believes the Pennsy's payroll disproves the Osler theory as well as anything has. ---------------------------------------------------------- End Of Fight Is Near Board of Public Works Member to Be Elected By Councils. The climax of one of the nastiest fights ever directed to the attentions of councils will be reached this evening when the two bodies meet in joint convention to select a member of the board of public works to fill the vacancy caused by the expiration of the term of W. T. McConnell. There are five candidates, Mr. McConnell and George Klesius and George W. Kuebler, both of whom have been former members of the board, C. L. Nonemaker of the Seventh ward and Simon Snyder of the Twelfth ward. The first ballot is not likely to result in a choice as each candidate will have a sufficient following to prevent an election. After the first ballot, the fight is expected to be between Klesius and Nonemaker. The subject of religion has been injected into the controversy, a matter which has been greatly deplored by many of the councilmen. Other positions will be filled by councils this evening, the vacancies on the board of appeals and a vacancy on the board of water, commissioners demanding attention. On the water board, President J. A. Elder will likely be chosen to succeed himself. --------------------------- MEMORIAL DAY PLANS BY G. A. R. Rev. E. G. Soyer of Tyrone Selected for the Orator of Day-Veterans Want Bells Tolled for Five Minutes. Plans for the celebration of Memorial Day in this city on an elaborate scale were discussed on Saturday evening at a meeting of the general committee of the Gray Army of the Republic, held in the hall at Eighth avenue and Eighth street. The committee plans to have all flags floating at half mast and to have the church and fire bells tolled from 12 o'clock to 12:05 p.m. on the day. The place for the holding of the usual ceremonies this year, was announced as Oak Ridge cemetery, and should the weather prove unfavorable preparations will be made to conduct the program in one of the East Side churches. Rev. E. G. Soyer of Tyrone will deliver the oration. One musical organization has offered its services. The Citizens' drum corps of Juniata offers to play in the parade for $16. The corps has sixteen members. A number of the clergymen and representatives of the G. A. R. Posts of the city have been asked to visit the following schools and deliver addresses relative to the keeping of the day. They are as follows; High school, Rev. H. L. Jacobs, Frank Emigh and R. W. 1. [PABLAIR-L] Altoona Times, 1884
    2. Duncansville Doings How the Denizens of the Village are Making Things Boom. William Greer, up at Foot of Ten, has a first class store, and he is a very fine store keeper. The Pennsylvania Railroad Company has a lot of men repairing the several culverts along the line of the new Portage Railroad. 'Squire Seibert wants the public to know that he will run his coaches from Hollidaysburg to the moonlight hop in his grove, on Saturday evening, July 19. Mr. John Shoenfelt is erecting a very nice mansion upon his lot purchased from John M. Gibboney, Esq., on Altoona street, close to the Evangelical Lutheran church. George P. Wilt is about to erect a large mansion upon a lot of ground purchased from 'Squire Seibert. It is to be a brick house, built of first class pressed brick. ------------------------- Gallitzin Gleanings Some Interesting Notes From Our Mountain Top Correspondent (July 10, 1884) Editors Times: Dr. Troxell, who is one of the physicians attending Mrs. James Hanlon reports that her condition is somewhat improved. We noticed another new home in course of erection in the vicinity of the fair grounds, but can't say just at present who the owner is. Mr. Michael Denny who recently removed from here to Altoona, we are informed, is going to play a horn in one of the bands of your city. We are informed that Messrs. B. M. Johnson & Co., are about to close their store in Tunnelhill and remove their goods to Hollidaysburg. About four hundred tons of coal are hoisted daily at Taylor & McCoy's shaft. Some of the mines are running steadily, but the balance are only running half time. Mr. Daniel McKenna, who lately embarked in the furniture and undertaking business, has added very much to the appearance of his place by laying a new boardwalk in front of it. Captain David Mills, who was in ill health during the fore part of the summer, is looking all right again. The Captain is one of the few surviving veterans who dared the dangers of two wars. Mr. Jacob Watt, formerly a freight conductor on the Pennsylvania Railroad, received some very severe bruises by jumping off a train in rapid motion at Kittanning Point a few evenings ago. Messrs. Eberly & Attlesperger have about two hundred thousand bricks already moulded for the new Catholic church here. It will take several hundred thousand more to complete the building. Mr. John Kinney, who was at one time a clerk in Johnson & Co.'s store is now running a store of his own on the opposite corner. John is an honest and industrious young man, and well deserves the great success he has attained. Mr. Jacob Boast, formerly of Lilly and who has been married only about ten months, buried his wife at Braddock, Pa., on last Friday. Mrs. Boast was a most estimable lady, and her death will be regretted by all who knew her. An infant a few days old survives her. ------------------------------------- Tyrone Topics Another Budget of Interesting News from the Lower End Mr. Charles Peters is assisting in the baggage room at the railroad station until the return of J. R. Stanley. Sheriff Tom Dunkel, of Centre county, was in town on Tuesday evening, looking as festive as in days of yore. Mr. Jack Hurd and Mr. W. Webber of your city, put in an appearance yesterday. They were both here on business. Mrs. Charles Yelletts went yesterday on Pacific Express in Hollidaysburg, to visit her old friends, she will be absent a few days. Mr. John Parks, freight conductor on the Middle division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, together with his family, left on a visit to Mifflinburg yesterday. Frank May and wife, accompanied by Miss Cramer, went east on Johnstown Express yesterday morning, intending to visit Harrisburg, Phillipsburg and Atlantic City. Mr. John Bell, of Bellwood, bobbed up serenely yesterday in our midst and looked as pleasant as ever, all on account of the nomination of Cleveland and Hendricks. Mr. Bennett, who has been stopping at the Ward House for the benefit of his health, left for his home in Elkton, Md., yesterday, on Day Express, much improved in spirits. Mrs. James McCann has returned home from Snow Shoe, where she had been visiting her sister, Mrs. Thomas McCann. We are pleased to learn that the latter person is somewhat improved in health. Isaac P. Walton, one of Tyrone's best citizens, left for Atlantic City on Day Express yesterday. He will also visit his mother near Philadelphia, who is a fine old Quaker lady, about 70 years of age. Mr. John Barnes and son, a coal operator, of Philipsburg, accompanied Bob Taylor to England. The Philipsburg band gave them a grand send off and then returned home after treating our citizens to some fine music. Mr. Hollingshead, a traveling jewelry salesman well known in Tyrone, who has been lying quite ill at his home in Camden, N. J., is we are pleased to learn, recovering rapidly, and is now taking in the sea breeze at Atlantic City. Messrs. William and Fred Voght left for Madison, Wisconsin, on Pacific Express yesterday morning where they will visit friends and old companions whom they have not seen for many years. They will be gone two or three weeks. A picnic party composed of the gay young lasses and lads of Tyrone, went to Vail yesterday. Mr. Tom Burchfield appeared to be master of ceremonies, as we saw him help lugging a big rope towards the baggage car. Well, nothing like it. Robbers tried to gain an entrance on last Tuesday night into the residence of Dr. Wilson, on Hill street. They succeeded in climbing to the top of the shed roof and hoisting a back window, but were discovered by oone of the Doctor's sons, which frightened them away. The young man who got knocked down for his drunken insolence on last Saturday night at the corner of Main and Juniata streets, is well known, as we have written him up several times. We will give him a chance to reform, as he expressed a desire of that kind, and will forbear to publish his name at this time. Ordinance No. 4, section 5, says: that "if any person or persons shall suffer his or her or their hog or hogs, horse or horses, mule or mules, sheep or goats, ox or steer, to go at large within said borough limits, the person or persons so doing shall be fined not less than one dollar for each and every offence to be collected as provided for." This above is an ordinance of Tyrone borough. We counted yesterday morning no less than seven hogs roaming the streets at their own sweet will. Comment is unnecessary. "The Vanderbilt railroad into the Clearfield coal regions is shipping 1,500 tons of coal daily. The route is shorter by 10 miles than any known coal road, and consequently the Vanderbilt coal, which is of a superior quality, is sold more than any other. The soft coal trade is terribly demoralized, and there is no fixed rate or price." The above is copied from the Pittsburg Commercial Gazette, of yesterday's issue, and for a whopper can't be beat. The truth of the matter is that the Vanderbilt line is not shipping a pound of coal of its own mining, but buys all their coal thus far from Harner, Jacobs & Co., in the Clearfield regions, which by them is shipped over the Tyrone division of the P. R. R. to Mill Hall, and then turned over to the Vanderbilt road. As for the soft coal trade being demoralized, there is not a word of truth in it, as the Tyrone & Clearfield railroad is being taxed to its utmost capacity to carry all the coal that is being offered for shipment, and, besides that, it is bringing fair prices in the eastern markets.

    2. Married On the 31st ult., by Henry Aurandt, Esq., Mr. GEORGE KRAIG, of Somerset county to Miss MARY CANOWAY, of Huston twp, Blair co. ------------------------------------------ Lady Firemen Now don't imagine, ladies, that we intend you shall run 'wid der mersheen,' not at all; we merely wish to notice that a number of ladies in Harrisburgh have become contributing members of one the Fire companies of that place, thereby proving a valuable auxiliary to the company; and we would suggest that such action on the part of the ladies of this place would soon bring about the proper equipment of the Fire company recently organized. Will the gentlemen accept of the ladies on such terms, and will the ladies join? Both, we think, will answer "I." ------------------------------------------- Distressing Accident William Pruner, a citizen of this place, lost his life on Friday of last week, by an accident so strangely sudden and frightful as to startle the whole community, causing a general silent pang of grief. He left home in the morning coach for Bald Eagle Furnace-left full of joy, bright hopes and jubilant joy. Playfully bidding his wife "good-bye," as the stage rolled away, with the remark that he would not be back for two weeks, he took his last stage ride, thinking not, nor once dreaming of harm or ill. To make the sad and fatal reverse which awaited him, still more terrible by contrast, he was in an unusually humorous and pleasant mood all the way going out to his destination, and all the time preceding the accident-so much so, indeed, that is was remarked by his companions. Having dispatched his business at Bald Eagle Furnace, he first thought was to walk back to town; but, seeing an acquaintance going by with a wagon load of shingles, he engaged a seat for himself and two companions. He took a seat on the fore end of the load of shingles, with his feet hanging down, whilst his friends sat at the side. The wagon had not gone more than a hundred yards, when, moving slowly, and without any apparent or sensible jolt, the shingles on which he was sitting gave way; having no foothold, he fell to the ground, and, before he was observed by the driver, the front wheel passed over his body! One of his companions saw him fall, and immediately shouted to the driver, but not in time to have the wagon stopped. He was carried to a house near by; medical aid was procured, and every attention shown in which kindness and inexpressible pity could suggest. But human aid was vain. Death had already set his inevitable seal upon his brow: death glared from eye; friendship and affection softly pillowing and bolstering his return home, could not save him; and when the darkness of evening began to gather, he was passing through "the valley of the shadow of death." His physical sufferings were necessarily beyond expression-beyond possible conception; made doubly acute, too, by the fact that he was fully sensible until within a short time of his dissolution. It is a kind of mournful solace to know that he bore his extreme sufferings with heroic fortitude, uttering no word of complaint or repining. the few words he spoke disclosed a distinct knowledge he was approaching death. His solicitude seemed to be not for himself; but the thought of his dear wife and infant child seemed to snap his very heart-strings. She mourned as only a young wife can mourn-with a deep, wild, despairing, inconsolable grief. 2. Barbara P Jameson
    3. I have the names of a couple and their marriage date and place. Would a marriage license or certificate have the names of parents on it? James McKim and Elizabeth Piper m 30 Dec 1845, Duncansville, Blair Co, PA. Maybe this could be found on a CD someplace? I have a couple of CDs for Ohio and they are pretty complete, (except for leaving out a couple of counties which I need) giving places to find the licenses. (If they were really married !) Thanks. And thanks for all the help on the McKims in census records and such. I have been able to find them all from 1820 to 1880, and mostly in Cambria Co. Barbara Jameson

    2. Altoona Tribune, 1886 The Accident Record A Fatal One Near Rockville-Two Yard Employees Injured. While endeavoring to make a coupling between cars Tuesday afternoon, near Fourth street, John V. Kimblin, a yard brakeman had his right arm caught and painfully but not seriously bruised. The accident was caused by his stumbling into a hole which was covered with snow and for that reason was not noticed. The hurt was examined by the company physician and Mr. Kimblin went to his home at No. 823 Eight avenue. Mr. W. H. Darrow, residing at No. 1420 Eleventh avenue, Tuesday met with an accident while in the discharge of his duties as a fireman in the yard. He was putting coal in the firebox, when the little finger of his right hand was caught between the door of the furnace and the lump of coal he was putting therein. The finger was so badly bruised that the nail had to be removed by a company physician. Mr. Darrow is a married man and 22 years of age. A fatal accident occurred on the Pennsylvania railroad near Rockville Tuesday morning of which David Krimmel, a young man residing on the Ridges in Antis township, near Bellwood, was the victim. He was aged about 24 years. Mr. Krimmel was employed as a brakeman on the freight train of which Mr. J. A. Kennedy, of this city, is a conductor, and had only been in the employ of the company a short time. From the Harrisburg Telegraph we learn that the unfortunate man was in the act of jumping on his train, which was going east, when he slipped and fell under the moving cars. His head was severed from his body. The York accommodation, which was running backwards and following the freight also ran over the body. The remains were removed to Rockville and afterward to Harrisburg where the coroner will hold an inquest. The body was placed in charge of an undertaker and will be sent to Bellwood. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Roaring Spring Ripples McClean & Baily shipped two car loads of stock on Saturday to the eastern market. D. M. Bare, esq., returned from his trip to Findlay, Ohio, where he spent several days in the interest of Findlay college, which will open in September. Bart ?lls has built for himself a neat, handy sulky, which he uses to drive over his parish with. He and Rev. Dutt have similar tastes, both having sulkys now. Both of them built their own vehicles. They are fine mechanics, as well as able ministers. Mr. Rose, the man who has been buying up walnut timber in this locality for a firm in Baltimore, who ships it to Europe, has made arrangements to have an agent inspect the timber at Ore Hill on Monday. (today) C. W. Zook, esq., of this place, has been assisting Mr. Rose. Mr. Rose has purchased over thirty thousand feet of good, large, walnut lumber. The executive committee of the Morrison's Cove Sunday school association have postponed the time for holding the convention at Roaring Spring from the 16th and 17th of September to the 22nd and 23rd, a week later. This postponement was made on account of the Blair county fair, which will be held during the week first appointed for the convention. An interesting programme will be announced in good time. Mr. Peter Sadtler, a notice of whose death has already appeared in the Tribune, was a native of Wurtemburg, Germany, where he was born November 30, 1816. He came to this country about 30 years ago and lived in this locality a greater portion of that time. He lived with his relative part of the time, Mr. Adam Korb. Mr. Sadtler was a kind-hearted Christian. His great delight was to visit the sick and minister to their wants. He was a member of the Catholic church and was interred in the cemetery at Newry, where services were held on Saturday at 9 a.m. ---------------- Philipsburg Pickings A large crowd of people from here were in attendance at Bigley camp meeting on Sunday. Trains were run on both the Pennsylvania and Beech Creek railroad. Eleven carloads were taken from here and thirteen came up from Lock Haven. The crowd at the camp grounds were estimated at from 5,000 to 7,000. The funeral of David Shontz, son of C. B. Shontz, took place Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. and was largely attended. David was a bright, good, promising young man, well liked by all who knew him, and will be greatly missed by his associates. W. W. Evans, D. D., of the Methodist Episcopal church, officiated at the funeral. Mrs. King died Wednesday morning at 4 a.m., leaving a husband and four small children to mourn her death, the youngest being but a babe a few weeks old. She was the wife of H. R. King, who came here a few years ago to manage some railroad contracts on the Beech Creek road, and liking this town, made it his home. In that time Mrs. King has made hosts of warm friends, all of whom deeply mourn her loss. Mr. King has our sympathy in this his hour of affliction. 1. [PABLAIR-L] Tyrone Cemeteries?
    2. Linda
    3. Can any of you please tell me which Blair Co. cemeteries are transcribed online? My immigrant ancestor, Jacob Tippery, worked in a lead mine and died about 1849 in Huntingdon County (prob. near Tyrone, according to the census), and I am looking for his tombstone. I understand that part of Huntingdon Co. later became Blair Co. I would appreciate any help in finding any burial records. If there are no Tyrone cemeteries, which ones are closest to that area, and which of these have been transcribed? Thank you very much, Linda Smith
