Hope all works out and thanks to everyone that contributes, especially for us that can not travel there. You all deserve a round of applause, and Annie gets the ovation and flowers! 3. Amen! Jess Davis I just wanted to say a very public thank you to my hero - Annie Whiteman. In addition to all the wonderful services Annie offers as List Administrator and Blair County Co-Coordinator, she also constantly scans Obituaries, offering them to the list with so much information even I can't miss a distant relative lurking there! And, in addition to that, she worries so about a group of Obituaries she'd scanned and prepared for us (that AOL lost) that she's now duplicating her hard work so we won't miss a single one. Annie, you're one in a million, and I can't possibly thank you enough for everything you've contributed to my ancestral database. T H A N K Y O U. 3. Annie; You deserve the largest of thank yous. Your tireless work for this list has helped so many of us put together so many pieces of our ancestors' jigsaw puzzles. It is because of your example that I have now being trying to do the same (although a poor copy of your efforts, I'm afraid) for a couple of other lists. Thank you again for your devotion and inspiration. Sue

    1. [PABLAIR-L] Altoona Mirror, 1918
    2. Williamsburg Mrs. John Frank of Hollidaysburg was a visitor on Monday at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hoover. Mrs. Dora Gates spent Saturday in Altoona. Mrs. George Allison and daughters Catharine and Helen have been sick for several days. Elwood Lantzer, who has been sick for the last ten days, is able to be out and about again. The public schools are all closed on account of the flu epidemic. Mrs. Will Brenneman and daughter Hilda of Hollidaysburg, spent Sunday with relatives in town. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fay and three children all have been sick for three days. Mr. and Mrs. John Acker and four children have been confined to their home by sickness for about ten days. Dr. E. H. Good and son George were recent visitors with the former's parents at Ebensburg. Blaine Isenberg of Altoona spent Sunday with relatives and friends at this place. John Craig, who was injured several months ago while at work at the paper plant, was removed to the hospital several days ago. Mrs. E. H. Garner spent several days with her husband, who is working in Altoona. H. S. Gurd and family who have been residents of this place for the last ten years, have moved to Altoona, where he has been employed for the past several months. Mrs. John Clapper, who has been suffering with pneumonia, is getting along nicely. Mrs. John Saylor is visiting relatives in Altoona. Robert Kifer, Robert Flemming, Luther Allender, Merrill Gosnell, Oscar Park, Jesse Ford and Mrs. T. B. Sherman are all on the sick list this week. Dr. and Mrs. J. G. Butler have returned to Roaring Spring after spending some time at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Clark. Mrs. Leonard Zillinger left on Tuesday to spend some time with her daughter, Mrs. Annie Himes, in Pittsburgh. Mrs. Annie M. Thompson has returned home after spending the past seven weeks with relatives in Alabama and Ohio. Mrs. Charles Rose and son are visiting the home of the former's parents at Marklesburg. Mrs. James Slusser and three children, Joe, Homer George and Elizabeth of Horrell, are visiting the home of her mother Mrs. Lillie Schell. Mrs. P. C. Brenneman, Mrs. Will Swisher and Francis Lytle have been sick at their homes the past week. ----------------------------------------------------------- Roaring Spring The epidemic of influenza which gained such a strong hold in the town before the board of health took the proper precautions to prevent the spreading of the disease, still holds a firm grip on the borough. During the week prior to the closing of the schools and in the places where crowds might congregate the number of cases increased from seventy-five to over 400, many of the new cases being school children, who carried the disease home and into families of six or seven. Neglect in disinfecting school rooms after teachers and students were infected are also reported. When the schools finally closed after half of the total of students enrolled were absent. In some instances school convened with only ten out of a possible forty-two students present. The situation is grave and with new cases of influenza and pneumonia being reported daily, there is no indication that the peak has been reached. Working heroically local doctors are experiencing difficulty in handling so many patients and are working night and day to give some relief to all. The physicians are further handicapped by the serious illness of Dr. W. Herbert Robinson, who contracted the disease a week ago. The wards in the Nason hospital are crowded with patients at the present time and the force of physicians and nurses is greatly overworked, handling the increased work. Fifteen of the patients are suffering with pneumonia, while five are ill with typhoid fever. In the district outside Roaring Spring there seems to be no relief from the influenza epidemic. At Ore Hill and that vicinity new cases have been reported and several pneumonia victims have been brought to the Nason hospital. Miss Ruth Gilliland of Park avenue and her sister Mrs. J. A. Hunter of Hartford, Conn., spent the week-end with friends at the Indiana State Normal school and Pittsburgh. While at Indiana Miss Gilliland rendered several solos at chapel services. Andrew Shoenfelt, who was dangerously ill with pneumonia, at his home on Locust street, is again able to be about. The construction work at the Mountain reservoir is about completed and conserve much water for the borough, and this in turn will cut down the pumping bill paid every month. Contractor William McGinnis was in charge of the work. FOR SALE-Fine canary bird, good singer. Reasonable price. Bird is part St. Andersonburg Roller. Canary cages can also be had at reasonable prices. Call at Mrs. Malda Bridenbaugh, 526 Locust street. FOUND-A Holstein heifer about 2 years old has been found on the borough water shed. Owner can secure same by calling on borough official and paying bill for keeping. 2. I want to thank all of you that have sent me suggestions to try to find the lost obituaries. All of them were much better than what I had tried; drinking pots of coffee, chain-smoking, cursing AOL and crying. I have tried some of the suggestions and they weren't the answer. I will call AOL again today, because my new theory is, the less experienced people work the weekends, the ones with more seniority and experience work during the week. If you would like a scanned copy of the following obits, please email me offlist and include the name and date sent to the list. Charles Raymond Oster, 1903 Edward Siegfried, 1937 Elizabeth Yingling, 1930 Ellen Cora Smith, 1937 Fannie Kelchner, 1930 Frank Finney, 1930 Henry Schultzaberger, 1937 James Spiers, 1937 James Hagey, 1903 James Smith, 1937 John Cotter, 1930 Lillian Selby, 1937 Lovina Brown, 1930 Margaret V. 2. Good news-Bad news Bad News first: I scan these obits whenever I have some spare time, and save them as 'mail to be sent later,' well, during an AOL upgrade, I lost all of my saved outgoing mail, which means I lost over a thousand obits, already scanned, name, parents, spouse, and date transcribed, and they are all gone~~poof!! Good News: After being a bit upset this morning, I have finally calmed down, realized that in the grand scheme of life, worse things could happen, and decided not to waste the scanned obits, and all the time I have spent. I will continue sending the obits, but without the info such as parents, spouse, area, etc., and will start scanning and transcribing new obits this afternoon. I hadn't save the newspaper transcriptions to disks, so I will have to start over with those. Please send the date the obit was sent to the list. Anna Kennedy, 1988 Bernard Brady, 1988 Dr. G. G. 1. [PABLAIR-L] Altoona City Directories ?
    2. Hi List, Does anyone know if Altoona had City Directories? If so, could some kind genealogy soul please look in a 1901 and/or 1902 Altoona City Directory for: HEAD, Joseph (wife Cora, daughter Hazel) ? I discovered a reference to them in the September 22, 1902 obituary for my G-Grandfather: "The funeral will take place from the Head home Wednesday afternoon, interment to be made in Grand-View Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Head and child, of Altoona, came over to the city on Way Passenger this afternoon to attend the funeral." Thanks very much. Sue shfsmith@aol.com

    1. [PABLAIR-L] Altoona Times, 1884
    2. Hollidaysburg Hints A Record of Interesting Events in the County Capital. Hon. B. L. Hewitt is home again from a three days' visit to the ocean. Mrs. W. W. Morrow presented us with some nice ripe peaches picked from trees in her own garden. The jury wheel, during its last run, failed to grind out the name of a Gaysporter. This is all wrong, as we have a dozen first-class jurors all anxious for a job. We had the pleasure to meet and greet an old Frankstowner, Robert M. Riddle, now a railroader living near Bellefonte. Bob is lean but jolly, and every bit as much a Riddle as he was thirty years ago. Yesterday a belle from one of the rural districts and caused more than one heart to flutter. She was dressed in red, has red shoes, red stockings, red hair, red cheeks, and carried a red sun umbrella, and in harmony with all, her name was Miss Rose Redicks. Yesterday a family picnic party looked down on the town from the top of the chimney rock. One young lady could compare a bird's eye view of Altoona to nothing else but a monster set of false teeth, as only a few houses on the hill tops in the form of a crescent could be seen. Yesterday Johnny Woods, with a party of boys went to the woods to gather raspberries. Johnny Woods got lost in the woods and Mrs. Woods, the mother of Johnny Woods, when her boy did not come home from the woods, said she had told Johnny Woods if he would go into the woods a woodchuck would eat him. But Johnny wooded up all right in the woodshed the next morning. -------------------------- Roaring Spring Ripples M. Kauffman has erected a new iron fence in front of his residence, presenting a beautiful appearance. D. M. Baer has been making extensive improvements to his residence, adding greatly to its appearance. Edward Hare, the gentleman who keeps the drug and confectionary store, has constantly on hand one of the finest stock of confections and fresh drugs in this part of the county. George Ehrhart is owner of a blooded horse which George says he is going to take over for Doctor Madara to see, on the 1st of August at the harvest home gathering, and it may be possible that Doc and he will test his speed as a trotter. -------------------------------- Not Dead After All Our old friend, Ignatios Beiter, of Munster township, Cambria county, is one of the few men who has had the pleasure, if pleasure it can be called, of reading his own obituary, which appeared in yesterday morning's issue of the The Times. We had our information from a gentleman who resides on the mountain, and therefore had no doubt about its correctness. It seems, however, that he was misinformed as to the name, the gentleman who died being Mathias Beiter, a brother of the gentleman above named and a resident of Portage township, in the same county. What we said on the subject is, however, equally applicable to both gentleman, and hence the mistake in the name is about the only error the needs to be corrected. -------------------------------------- Death of Infants Edgar T., son of Lemmon and Emma Wissinger, died yesterday, aged 10 weeks and 4 days. The funeral will leave the residence of the parents, Fourth avenue, between Eighteenth and Nineteenth streets at 7 o'clock this morning to proceed to the railroad station. Interment will be at Conemaugh. Rupert Thomas, son of Robert L. and Maria T. Earle, died on Friday, aged 2 years, 5 months and 7 days. the funeral will leave the residence of the parents, Fifth avenue and Eighteenth street, this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Internment at Oak Ridge cemetery. Both of the above funerals will be under the management of Undertaker Stevens. Edna May, a twin daughter of John E. and Louella Irwin, died from cholera infantum yesterday afternoon at 5:45 o'clock, aged 6 months and 14 days. The remaining twin is suffering from the same dread disease, though its death is not anticipated. The parents reside at 1115 Fourth avenue.

    1. Re: [PABLAIR-L] Update: Proposed PA State Budget Cuts for PA Libraries
    2. Jesse Davis
    3. WHERE do you think that money comes from in the first place? We tend to think that money fed back to us by the political bureaucracy comes from trees. It costs less to raise it and spend it locally than to send it to Harrisburg for them to dole out in exchange for votes. J Davis ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joe & Stephanie Grohol" <joeandsteph@cqservices.com> To: <PABLAIR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 10, 2003 10:30 PM Subject: [PABLAIR-L] Update: Proposed PA State Budget Cuts for PA Libraries Hi, All....I am writing this email to just give up a heads up on an article that I saw in my home town's paper on what Ed Rendell is proposing to do....we do have a leeway..this proposed cut has to go through the State legislature and all before it goes through, but just wanted you to know what is going on....since myself (Stephanie) works in a local library. Here is the article: "State Budget Axe Falls Heavy on Libraries It Could Mean Cutting Staff, Hours Locally By Wes Skillings This is one National Library Week in which there is not much cause for celebration, thanks to the cuts in Gov. Ed Rendell's 2004 budget which slashes state aid to Pennsylvania's libraries in half. It appears that Rendell, who touts himself as the education governor, has tried to make up for his own revenue shortfall, some of which was inherited, by taking away half of the $75 million now allocated to our public libraries when the checks are cut next year. That cut will be across the board to local libraries and in Wyalusing, for example, the previous state aid of approximately $11,000 will be sliced to $5,500 in 2004--a huge impact on a small-town library. In its current budget, the breakdown in state aid Wyalusing received was about $4,000 in quality library aid; $5,000 in the Incentive for Excellence program, and $2,000 under equal distribution. "It is likely staff will need to be cut, hours cut, the materials budget slashed, and othe r services such as interlibrary loan and programming downsized," reported Bradford County Librarian Diane Sadler. Sadler was referring to the Wyalusing Public Library, but her prognosis applies to most other community public libraries in rural Bradford and Wyoming Counties as well. "Wyalusing has been hit already with local cuts and shrinkage in investments and donations," Sadler said, adding that "(with) these further decreases in revenues the library ...will have no choice but to make serious cutbacks." This is not just a Wyalusing problem or a county problem, it is a Pennsylvania problem, and The Philadelphia Inquirer in a Saturday editorial predicted "a nightmare for patrons" of libraries all across the state if the Rendell budget package holds. "The stunning reversal of state support after decades of pernicious neglect threatens any hope of progress," the commentary, delivered on the eve of National Library Week, stated. "Instead, Pennsylvania is slam med backward to a deplorable distinction as one of the nation's cheapest stewards of public libraries." For example, the newspaper reported that the Philadelphia Free Library, thanks to the announced cuts, will have to lay off 40 people, close seven branches and cut public access to hundreds of computers, as well as abandoning Saturday hours. The impact for large and small libraries alike will also jeopardize other funding, such as federal matching dollars and grants and loans that require local incentive matches. "Resources that the Wyalusing Library depends on such as the county library (system headquarters) and the Brown Library in Williamsport (District Center) for rotating collections, providing interlibrary loans, continuing education, program support, will be cut and not able to continue support services to Wyalusing Public Library," Sadler predicted on the local front. "These cuts for Wyalusing could be as serious as shutting off the comp uters for hours at a time to save on the electricity bill. Wyalusing's budget is already lean. This is meat that is being cut off the bone. "Students will have limited access to research materials. Businesses will not be able to run in and borrow the library equipment on a whim, and the wonderful programming such as summer reading programs will be limited in scope. Wyalusing Library will be competing with other organizations for the donated dollar and that will take a lot of the librarian's time." That burden will fall on Wyalusing Librarian Kristin Smith-Gary, who, for the time being, has deferred comment on local repercussions from the projected state aid cuts to Sadler. The one hope of salvation is the public, the people who rely on their community libraries from everything from their weekly reading fare, research needs, computers, audio books and various other programs. Library organizations and advocates will be aggressively bringing their concerns before the public and urging the news media to editorialize that voters need to urge their state legislators to do something about stemming this project slash in state funding to our libraries. "The battle is not over until June 30," Sadler notes.. "We have until then to make the public aware of what the cuts mean and how it affects them personally." There is some good news regarding funding to our local libraries, notes Sadler. She reports no projected cuts for the POWER Library program, which means databases will likely be maintained. Money for interlibrary loan is still funded. However, reimbursement for interlibrary loans is only a small percentage of the actual expense to a library. The other problem with dealing with such significant financial cuts is the so-called standards required by the state, such as the hours a library has to be open and the programs it is required to provide. "There is no move to cut some of the standards that small l ibraries found burdensome," said Sadler, pointing to longer hours, weekend hours, higher materials acquisition (12 percent of operating budget, plus built-in increases to that). There are also enforced standards for continuing education hours and even the number of librarians required. The Bradford County Library, based on the population it serves, is required to have three professional librarians, all of whom require a minimum education and certification. Last year, for instance, the county library hired Stephanie Farr to fill that third professional slot. "We will still be held to those standards," Sadler reiterated. The legislature and Gov. Rendell say that critical issues are services to the unemployed, improving pre-reading skills and funding for education, she notes. "What agency serves all three groups better than the library?" That is the article....hopefully this won't go through and all....just letting all know what is going on...and I hope the administrator is ok with me sending this along.....
