AN ELOPEMENT Until Monday last there resided over in Hollidaysburg a family composed of Mr. and Mrs. George Jenkins, with no children. Mr. Jenkins is a miner employed in the ore mines in the vicinity of the county capital, to which place he removed from Pittsburgh some six months ago. For the past nineteen years he has led a happy life in the society of her alone whom he called by the endearing and sacred epithet of wife. When the husband and wife left Pittsburgh for the purpose of locating at the county capital, they were accompanied by a young man named Daniel Osborne, also a miner, between whom the social relations were of a most friendly character, too much so, it fact, as the sequel proved. During all the long term of years that Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins lived together, the husband saw nothing in every day life of his wife that would lead him to suspect her infidelity to the marriage vow, even up to the morning of the eventful day on which she gathered up her robes around her and silently stole away. On Monday morning of the present week, Mrs. Jenkins prepared the breakfast as was her wont, which was partaken by both husband and wife, and afterward Mr. J. repaired to his daily toil. In the evening, with a light heart and a buoyant step, thinking only of her whom he supposed would be in waiting to receive him and to greet him with a holy kiss at the close of the labors of the day, he retraced his steps homeward bound, yet upon arrival there he was surprised beyond measure to find the house cold and tenantless, his wife being nowhere to be found. Discovering a letter on the floor he picked it up, and excitedly devouring the contents of the envelope was dumbfounded as he read the letter in his wife's handwriting, which was addressed to a friend in England informing her that she (Mrs. Jenkins) was soon to leave the shores of America and sail once again to her old home in a foreign clime. With crushing force did this intelligence come to the kind and honest-hearted husband. He could hardly realize that the woman who had been the wife of his bosom for a period of nineteen years could thus desert without a moment's notice. Upon making inquiry in the neighborhood, the still more unwelcome news awaited him, Mrs. Jenkins had been seen leaving, accompanied by a male, but with whom? With a man who was a fellow workman, a man who had been treated with all the kindness and respect of an intimate friend, a man who had frequently been invited by the husband to partake of his hospitality, the man Daniel Osborne. It was learned that Osborne and Mrs. Jenkins had left Hollidaysburg on the noon train for Altoona, but it is not known whether they took their departure eastward or westward bound from here. The perfidious wife and the scoundrel that enticed her to leave her home, took nothing with them but a small sewing machine and some eight or ten dollars belonging to Mr. Jenkins, although it is said that Osborne had succeeded in laying away some money for a rainy day. The latter and the Jenkins' family had been acquainted for a period of nine months only. It is thought by Mr. Jenkins that the letter referred to was simply a ruse and that the guilty parties are still in the State. Both parties are of English birth. Mrs. Jenkins being thirty seven years of age, has a mole on her left cheek and when she left home was dressed in a blue velveteen dress. Osborne is about twenty-five years of age, is slightly pock-marked and is said to be a shrewd and cunning individual. Mr. Jenkins was in the city yesterday, and had an interview with Mayor Gilland, to whom he related the facts of the case in substance as noted, and asked the aid of that officer in the effort to ascertain the whereabouts of both his wife and the villain who was instrumental in ruining his happy home. Mr. J. is not blessed with an abundance of this world's treasures, but is exceedingly anxious to have the guilty parties apprehended, and will be thankful for any information that will lead thereto. Exchanges, especially between those of Pittsburgh and Hollidaysburg, will confer a favor by making a note of the elopement and the description of the parties. ----------------------------------------- The Court Second Week-Civil List W. We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We have just published something sent to us by Jim Snyder,President of the Blair County (PA) Genealogical Society. It is a fascinating illustration of that county's poorhouse. It includes an annotated floor plan which gives us many clues to the way the inmates lives were regulated. Clicking on the smaller picture will expand it, and doing so is necessary to see those details. Depending on your computer system, that can take quite a while ... but we think you will find it worth your wait! DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on PENNSYLVANIA on the table of states, and finally on BLAIR on the table of counties. If you have been to the website recently you may have to click REFRESH or RELOAD on the browser to see the new information. There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS (which explains why you might climb over your own "brick walls" at the poorhouse) as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newsletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

Falling on his head and neck, from the top of a box car in the local yards this morning, Edwin Franklin Wolfe, aged 31, of 1425 Fourth avenue, Juniata, was seriously injured, the fall being one that in most cases would have proven fatal. Wolfe, who is a brakeman, was a member of the crew of Engine 25, which, in charge of Conductor D. B. Lasher and Engineman George Yon, was making up a train in the coal yard, just east of the Juniata scales, at 8:05 o'clock, and was applying brakes on a box car when the brake rigging broke and he was thrown to the tracks. Wolfe fell on his head and neck on the ties and was rendered unconscious. He fortunately did not fall under the train and fellow trainmen placed him on a engine and brought him to Eighth street, from where he was take to the Altoona hospital. While a fall of that kind would almost in any case result in a fracture of the skull or concussion of the brain, it was found that he had escaped both, but that the muscles of his neck are badly sprained and that the nerves in the right arm injured, the arm being practically paralyzed. While his injuries are serious, they are not regarded as at all fatal. --------------------------------------------------------- Bursts Blood Vessel John H. Fiske, the well known insurance man and one of the leading members of the Masonic fraternity in the city, is confined to his home, 1028 Twenty-fifth avenue, as the result of the bursting of a blood vessel in his leg. Mr. Fiske has been in bed for over a week and while he is now slightly improved, he is still unable to place his weight on his foot. I am looking for a birth record for Clare M. Waltz, supposedly born around 1887-88--either in Wilmore, Cambria County, or Altoona, Blair County. Also looking for a death record for her in Cresson, Cambria County--sometime between 1900 and 1910. Father was John G. Waltz; mother was Margaret (McGovern) Waltz. Family stories always said that Clare was the firstborn child of John G. and his second "wife" (unknown name)--after he deserted his first wife, Margaret and family. However, through the help of an Internet friend, I have found this family in the 1900 census, living in Cresson, Cambria County--listing Clare M. as the firstborn child of John G. & Margaret. In the 1910 census, the family is still living there, but Clare M. is not listed--and Margaret reports that she had another child that had died. Does anyone have any record books listing births and deaths in these areas? If so, I would really appreciate a look-up. Thanks! Hi there, Is there anyone familiar with the Knights of Malta there in Blair County, Pa. Probably in the Altoona area. The photo with my grandfather in it looks like it was taken in front of the Carnegie Club and printed in the upper left hand corner is Homewood Commandre No 378; A&10K of M September 14, 1914.
