    1. [PABLAIR-L] "Trace your family tree" - 1905
    2. I didn't know people did this a century ago. - Shawn >From the Tyrone Herald, 12 Jan 1905: "Trace your family tree" "A pleasant pastime - literally - for those who have no more pressing duties and wish to get outside their environment at least in thought will open up before her who begins to mount a family tree. Tracing one's genealogy may become - probably will become - a matter of absorbing amusement and attention, for it entails a thread gathered up here, dropped there, a letter to write, a book to read, a register to consult. To the self absorbed, the despondent, the listless, one may recommend this diversion as certain to suit even rather morbid conditions of temperament and yet as certain to gently force the mind away from itself to other persons and things in opening up a wider and wider field of reflection."

    2. DUNCANSVILLE Mr. and Mrs. William F. Koon left Thursday morning for Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Niagara Falls, where they will spend several days sight seeing. I. W. Focht spent Wednesday and Thursday with his mother at Allenville. Mrs. W. P. Irvine is spending he week with relatives in Pittsburgh. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mutzabaugh and Frank Green of Harrisburg returned to their home after a very enjoyable visit with the former's brother, Win Mutzabaugh. Miss Edna Mutzabaugh, a daughter, who was also a member of the party, is spending her week's vacation here. Assessor L. B. Benner assessed and registered 98 women of the borough on Tuesday and Wednesday. Of this number 98 were registered Republicans the other 11 being divided among the other parties. Women to vote must pay 38 cents tax before Oct. 2, unless they have already paid state tax or tax on real estate. Professor Grant Norris attended a number of the sessions of teachers' institute held in Altoona this week. Mrs. Paul Ackers of East Liberty, Miss Garritt of Camden, J. J. and Mrs. Francis McGeary of Altoona, were recent guests of Miss Mary Beach. Albert Cochran of Cross Keys has the temporary appointment of mail carrier on rural route No. 1, succeeding Russell Gearhart, who has resigned. Being a resident of this route and being acquainted with most of the patrons, Mr. Cochran's efforts to serve faithfully are being well received. Mr. and Mrs. William Bradley of Los Angeles, Calif., were callers at the home of Mrs. Jane Wallace on Thursday. Word was received by relatives in town of the death of Bernard Rice at his home at Lima, O., on Thursday afternoon. A famous advertising slogan might be modified to suit local conditions and read "Have you a little paraffin chewer in your home." During the week a large number of youngsters have been noticed masticating some pure white substance upon inquiry it developed that the little folks have devised a plan to overcome the high price of chewing gum by chewing paraffin instead. While they admit they taste is not quite so delicious as that of the real stuff, it makes a fairly good substitute and certainly beats not chewing at all. After all, taste is not taken into consideration according to one little fellow who thought only of the amount "you kin git fer a nickel." Besides a large number of friends and relatives from Altoona and vicinity, the following relatives from a distance attended the funeral of Mrs. E. N. Lindsey on Thursday afternoon: Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Imhoff of Stellton, Mrs. Katura Stevenson and Mrs. Elsie Godfrey both of Youngstown, O., Clinton Ainsworth of Glenwood; Edward Kensinger of Pittsburgh, Messrs. Frank, Harvey and William Kensinger and Miss Mayme Kensinger, all of Martinsburg, Dr. J. W. Lindsey of Imler, Mrs. Ella Morehead and Mrs. Fickes both of King, Mr. and Mrs. Charles G?owden of Loysburg, George Ebling of York, Miss Sara Ebling of Tyrone, Fred Treese and family of Cresson, Mrs. Matthew Sell and Mrs. C. Z. Replogle of Roaring Spring, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Penroe and William Swisher of South Fork, Mr. Edward J. Imhoff, who is an official at the Bethlehem Steel company at Steelton, arranged all of the details of the funeral to the complete satisfaction of the family, who are greatly indebted to him for his kindness. Mrs. Peterson and two daughters, Mary and Grace of Nyack, N. Y., are visiting the former's sister, Mrs. L. H. Brown. Mrs. Ella McCaffney of Pittsburgh and Mrs. Shultzaberger of Altoona were recent visitors at the home of Samuel Beach. A number of young men from in and about town left Wednesday afternoon for Mill Creek where they have rented a cottage for a week to spend their vacation fishing and boating. Numbered among the party were: Messrs. Robert Gearhart, Luther Wyerman, Orville Wilt, George Wilt, David Yeckley and Roy Yeckley. -------------------------------------------- CARD OF THANKS We desire in this manner to thank our friends and neighbors for their kindness and sympathy shown, and for the many beautiful floral tributes and the use of their automobiles at the time of the death of my dear departed wife and our loving mother, Mrs. E. 3. In the Liebgott Funeral Home book published by the BCGS there is a coffin purchased either by or for a Mrs. Martin F. Everhart on March 8, 1921. Liebgott was in Duncansville, PA. this book was published in 1989 and lists coffin purchases from 1891-1942 from store and furneral home ledgeres. In some cases it lists the cemetery, but not in this case. BCGS may be able to help you further.

    3. Dear John: Unfortunately, all records of burials prior to 1959 were lost or destroyed in a fire. There is a book by the BCGS that shows burials - these were reconstructed from tombstone rubbings. No Martin Everhart because of no stone. There is one Everhart - George W. b 1917, d 1952 in plot 003 - 20. You may want to check with funeral homes that may have buried Martin. I did this with some success for six relatives buried there without stones. I did not find the location, but I did find confirmation that they were indeed buried in Carson Valley Cemetery. 2. Almost Killed A Man A Murderous Assault E. A. Heller, a One-Legged Soldier Assaulted by Highwaymen Mr. E. Heller, a one legged veteran of the late war between the north and south, whose home is at No. 224 Fifth avenue, this city, is also a member of the committee having in charge the making of arrangements and raising funds for the Fourth of July celebration in this city. This committee has been holding a cake walk in Logantown to raise money for this purpose, and Mr. Heller being chairman of the committee, it was no doubt thought he had the money thus realized in his possession. Last night Mr. Heller was on his way home after the close of the entertainment, and when on Seventh avenue near Bunker's planing mill, he was attacked and roughly handled by two unknown thugs. He was struck on the head with a coupling pin and was also cut in different places with a knife and generally roughed up. Being rendered partially unconscious by reason of his injuries, the highwaymen then went through his clothes, but not finding anything of value they left him lie and made good their escape. After some time Mr. Heller revived sufficiently to make his way to his home and Dr. Cough being called in, an examination of his injuries was made, when it was found that they were of a very serious nature, and it is hard to tell how they may result. Mr. Heller was a member of the Forty ninth Pennsylvania Veteran Volunteers and is at present Chaplain of Post 468, Grand Army of the Republic, of this city. Robberies and assaults are getting entirely too frequent in this city. The police department is entirely too small to properly patrol the large extent of territory embraced within our limits, and if Councils do not desire this state of affairs to go on from bad to worse, the Mayor should be promptly authorized to increase his force. ------------------------------ TWO SERIOUS ACCIDENTS One Man Loses a Foot While Another Breaks an Ankle At an early hour this morning Salvador Carlfront, an Italian employed as a track hand on the Pennsylvania railroad and whose home is at Blair Furnace, was struck by an engine and run down at that place. The wheel passed over his left and mashed it in a terrible manner. He was brought to Fourth street, this city, on a shifter, and being taken from there to the hospital in an ambulance, his left leg was amputated a short distance above the ankle. Thomas Haley, of No. 314 Walnut avenue, who is well known as chief watchman at the railroad machine shops, was out riding this morning with a horse and buggy. When at Twentieth avenue and Ninth street his horse took fright and ran away. Mr. Haley deeming his place in the buggy a dangerous one made a jump to the ground, and in doing so his left ankle was badly fractured. He was removed to the hospital where he was given the necessary surgical attention, and is doing as well as can be expected. ------------------------------------------------------ SOLD BY THE SHERIFF Properties Which Came Under the Hammer Yesterday The quarterly Sheriff's sales of real estate of delinquent debtors took place at 10 o'clock yesterday morning at the court house in Hollidaysburg. 2. Local Glances Soda Water at Irwin's Drug Store The Excelsior Band will have another cake walk this evening in Rayme's Hall. S. C. Potts Camp, No. 12, Sons of veterans will picnic at Lloydsville, on Saturday next. Quite an interesting gathering took place last evening at the home of Miss Mary O'Donnell, No. 318 Third avenue. Four or five couple of her friends enjoyed a refreshing layout, and several pieces of vocal and instrumental music. after which the visitors wended their way homeward-11:30. Yesterday John Farabaugh, a workman in the employ of John Fraker, had a narrow escape from what might have been a serious injury. While employed in tinning a roof on the stable of S. M. Griffith, he lost is hold and fell to the ground, a distance of about thirty feet, a fortunately slighting landing on his feet, sustaining no injury. ------------------------- The Marriage Record Miller-Colburn At the Fifth Avenue Methodist Episcopal parsonage, on Tuesday evening, June 9, by Rev. R. H. Colburn, Mr. Martin R. Miller of Carlisle, Cumberland county, Pa. to Mrs. Lucretia Colburn, of Phillipsburg, Centre county, Pa., sister-in-law of the officiating clergyman. Mr. and Mrs. Miller left on the midnight train for Washington, D.C., followed by the best wishes of their many friends. Albright-Boult Mr. John S. Albright and Miss Lillian K. Boult were married in Roanoke, Va., on Saturday, June 6, at the Presbyterian parsonage by Rev. Dr. W. C. Campbell. The bride is a daughter of J. F. Boult, of this city. ------------------------------------------- Boy Shot in the Leg While bathing in the stream a short distance above Juniata yesterday afternoon a number of boys from this city and Juniata became involved in a quarrel. Among the boys from this city was one named Geesey, and it appears that when the fight started he was deserted by his friends and left to wage the battle alone, and being pressed hard, struck by a number of stones and somewhat frightened, he drew from his pocket a revolver. His opponents took this as a great joke and continued to make it warm for him when Geesey, it is stated, fired from his revolver, holding it toward the ground, but just as it exploded a boy named Funk rushed toward him and received the ball in the fleshy part of one of his legs. The boy, although not badly hurt, fell to the ground and made his escape with the crowd after him. Young Funk was taken to his home and it is not thought he is seriously injured. ---------------------------------- City Criminal Matters Last evening while on his beat on the East Side, officer Morgan saw two men who were acting in a rather suspicious manner, and also had in their possession a quantity of goods which they seemed anxious to keep from his gaze. He told them to halt, but instead of so doing they dropped their bundles and started off on a run, soon leaving him out of sight. He then gathered up what they had thrown away and took it to the Mayor's office, where an investigation showed that they were chisels, braces, bits and tools of various kinds, doubtless part of the plunder secured at the hardware of J. P. Dagenhart on Seventh avenue. Two common drunks were arrested by the officers last night. These were given a hearing before the Mayor this morning and upon the payment of the usual fine were released. Railroader Officer Hamlin arrested a boozy individual last night and placed him in the coop. Later on he got out by leaving security for a hearing this morning, but he failed to show up. E. H. Flick, esq., and Nicholas Behm have been arrested on the charge of malicious prosecution on oath of Charles A. Roush. This suit has grown out of the whisky cases lately before Alderman Rose. -------------------------------------- An Over-crowded Asylum Cumberland, Md.--June 13--The special session of the circuit court for Alleghany county was occupied in disposing of the lunacy cases of Henry Meyers and Miss Sarah Cunningham, of Lonaconing; Mrs. Louise Trenzell, of Barton, and Joseph H. Smith (colored) of Cumberland. The parties were all declared insane and sent to Sylvan Retreat. The disposal of four lunacy cases in one day is rather remarkable in Alleghany county. At the rate the asylum has been gaining inmates lately the institution will have to be enlarged. It is now overcrowded. 1. [PABLAIR-L] Altoona Tribune, 1886
    2. Woodbury Splinters Dr. R. Christian has been on the sick list for the past week. Dr. J. A. Baird and family, of Brisbin, are paying us a friendly visit. Rev. E. Dutt, assisted by Rev. Andrew Decker held communion in the Lutheran church on Sunday. On Monday night a murderous assault was made on Jerry S. Reminger and wife in Bloomfield township. As they were about to retire their neighbor Sylvester Mock appeared and began throwing stones, hitting Mr. Reminger in the back and forehead and knocking him senseless. Mrs. Reminger being a powerful woman, physically made for him saying, "For God's sake don't kill us, Mock" when he started on a run towards his home, followed by Mrs. Reminger for some distance. Mr. Mock has been put under bail and will have a hearing before W. H. Clouse, esq., on Saturday. On Sunday night the safe of John L. Replogle, esq., was opened. At about midnight Mrs. Replogle woke up and discovered there was a light on in the mill room. She awakened her husband, who at once went to the mill and to the door where the thieves were at work. When he saw who they were he left the mill unnoticed to get help. On his return the screeching of a door alarmed the rascals, when they jumped out of the window, leaving a shawl which they had hung over the window. Mr. Replogle had left the outer door of the safe open, so they had only the inner locks to work on, which they had not yet succeeded in opening. Consequently they left with less than they came. Mrs. Clara A. Longenecker, wife of our leading merchant, A. S. Longencker, and the last sister of Messrs. W. S. and William Lee, of Altoona, departed this life on Saturday last, at the home of her father, James Lee, esq., aged 38 years, 6 months and 24 days. When 15 years of age she joined the Lutheran church and gave her heart to God, of which church she remained a consistent member unto the end. The high estimation in which she was held by her friends and neighbors was well attested by the unusually large number that attended her funeral. She had been confined to her room for the last six months with that wasting disease consumption, yet she was always cheerful and resigned to the will of Him who doing all things best. Peacefully she passed from her husband, six small children and every person her friends, to her rest in heaven. Yes, Clara has gone to her eternal home, leaving behind her a Christian character worthy the imitation of all. ------------------------------------------- Frankstown Findings A meeting of the Prohibition association of Frankstown township has been announced, to take place on Tuesday evening, June 15, in Frankstown. The Methodist Episcopal congregation of Frankstown are putting a new roof on their church, and expect to have it repainted and otherwise repaired. We do not wish to be egotistical, but, according to our judgement, we would differ somewhat from the last assessed value of property situated in and about the old town of Frank. On Monday last the school board organized by electing Elias R. Moore president; T. T. Hilemen, secretary, and Blair Brua, treasurer. Salary of teacher for the coming year from thirty to thirty-five dollars per month. The winter grain in this township will not average a half crop. The corn on light and sandy land is well set but small, and on clayey and heavy land it has been replanted and still very little corn. From present appearances there will be an abundance of cherries and plums, no peaches and some apples, but we fear not as plenty as was anticipated earlier in the season. ------------------------- >From McKee Miss Lucy Loudon, of your city, was visiting here a few days, being the guest of Mrs. Hartman. Cherries are already in market, and from what we can learn there will be plenty and still some to spare. Mrs. Sarah Lorenz, of Leamersville, was away attending the funeral of her father. She returned home yesterday. The festival held by the United Brethren church of East Freedom at that place Friday and Saturday evenings was a success financially and otherwise. We are told there will be a wedding in the near future and suppose before another writing the parties will have that knot tied and be in the matrimonial ring. Boys, take a warning in time and look out for the ladies who call themselves beggars, for they are going around once again with pencil and paper and say there's going to be another festival. Rev. Owen Hicks will deliver a temperance lecture in the Methodist church here this Wednesday evening of 7:30 o'clock. All should avail themselves of hearing on this occasion as it will certainly be quite a treat. --------------------------------- Eldorado Items The fruit crop is promising. Our Sunday school is promising fair to be progressive this summer. If any one wishes to see some nice clover fields, just take a drive around by Eldorado. Long days, short nights and plenty of hard work have closed our literary society for the season. Our old friend John Riling has quite recovered from the injury received from being kicked by his horse. Our friends the Colclesser Bros., are doing a fair business in the ax factory. They are good fellows and do excellent work. Business at the warehouse has been very good this spring. Thirteen Deering self-binders have already been sold this season by our friends, H. I. Stultz. A car load of these binders has just been received and several taken by farmers immediately from the car. J. A. Boyce, our railroad agent, has recently purchased the William Lantz estate. This is a valuable property and a beautiful location, it has on it one of the best orchards at Eldorado. We congratulate our old time friend on this purchase. The last correspondence we noticed from here seemed to have East Eldorado badly mixed up with Eldorado. East Eldorado is situated nearly one half mile southeast from Eldorado and is honored with one democrat. Eldorado is void of this honor. East Eldorado has been making some improvements. J. A. Boyce has nearly completed his new house and Mr. Strong has been repairing his. We learn that Mr. Blackburn is going to build this season in the vicinity of East Eldorado. ---------------------- A Good Set Of Teeth Inserted for Ten Dollars Dr. J. S. Mardis Dental Rooms, Corner Seventh avenue and Twelfth street, Altoona, PA. Office open all hours. All work warranted. ----------------------- J. B. 3. Could Lottie be a nickname for Charlotte? J Davis ----- Original Message ----- From: <Carothershd@aol.com> To: <PABLAIR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 26, 2003 5:31 PM Subject: [PABLAIR-L] Carothers/Altoona/Blair Co/1900 census I would like a lookup in the 1900 Census for Thaddeus Carothers and wife Lottie. I have a book of the Altoona City Hall Birth Records and it has twins, Verna and Viola born in 1890, but the parents are T.E. and Charlotte Carothers. Thaddeus had a daughter Viola who was 19 in 1910 census, which would be make her birth date of 1890. Thought perhaps the 1900 census would tell me something. No Verna is showing in the 1910 census for Thaddeus. Thought that maybe Charlotte could be a misprint. Any help is greatly appreciated. 2. I would like to thank everyone for their reply to my question and my lookup. I have what I needed and the twins did belong to Thaddeus and Lottie. Every record I have is Lottie and not Charlotte. Maybe she just didn't like the name Charlotte. Well, thank you again. This is by far the best and most helpful list. Maureen
