Constable George Grove of that place received a telegram this morning giving notice of the arrest and will leave for Pittsburgh this evening to bring the prisoner to Blair county. The information was sworn out last September as the result of a quarrel which occurred at the home of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Ott, the informant. As a result of the fracas at the Ott home, near Greenwood, Miss Ott, a daughter, has also made information against Hueber, charging him with assault and battery and threats. It is alleged that Hueber's wife was staying with her mother and that Hueber went to the home to secure custody of a small child and being refused, the fight occurred. ---------------------- Marriage Record Callan-Steckroth Mr. J. I bought a cabinet card album on eBay about a month ago and I just finished putting the scans of the photo in an online album in our Blair USGenWeb Archives. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/blair/1picts/album1/album1.htm There are 52 photos in the album, but there are only two photos with names written on them, unfortunately - surnames KAGARICE and HANNAWALT. The seller told me she thinks she bought it about 10 years ago at an estate auction in the Baker's Summit or Roaring Spring area. The photo studio names are a typical south central PA mix. There's no text file for this album. If you misplace the url, look for the link to it on the Miscellaneous page of the Blair archives. Once again, the BCGS is hosting an outstanding speaker for this month's meeting and I want to remind everyone that the BCGS meeting is this Thursday, May 15th, at 7:30, and the speaker is Richard Hite, Asst. State Archivist, Ohio Historical Society. Mr. Hite will be speaking on using DNA as a genealogy tool, a relatively new concept in genealogy, and I don't believe the opportunity to hear this explained, and for FREE, has been presented locally. The BCGS will have extra seating available for this meeting, and I hope all of you that are able to attend will take advantage of this opportunity. Please pass this information along to family and friends living in Blair Co., even if they are not interested in genealogy, this will be a very interesting speaker. I recently purchased the book "Daniel Hale WILLIAMS:Negro Surgeon" by Helen Buckler that has raised my belief that Daniel Hale WILLIAMS' family and my Williams' family may be very closely connected. It started several years ago when I noticed a historical marker at 315 Blair Street indicating that it was the birthplace of the first doctor to successfully perform open-heart surgery. I almost did not make serious note of this information when I saw that it indicated that he was black. Just a few blocks away, at 213 Mulberry Street, my great-great grandmother, Annie Elizabeth (WILLIAMS) TAYLOR died many decades later. Thinking there might be more than just a remote chance of a connection, I copied down the information on the marker. I should point out that the book is a bit elusive about the WILLIAMS ancestors that were actually black. There is undeniably Black and Native American blood in Dr. WILLIAMS' mother's family. In the 1850 census, Dr. WILLIAMS' grandfather (also named Daniel) was living in Centre County and is listed as "M" (Mulatto), and his father is listed in Hollidaysburg as "M" (though he has become "B" by the 1860 census). However, his great-grandfather, Joseph WILLIAMS, spoke German fluently and apparently printed and sold Bibles for a living (Dr. WILLIAMS' father and grandfather were both barbers). The book goes further to state that many of Joseph's descendants married into white families and were able to "be white" because of their light skin. I would suspect that, if there is a connection, it would be through one of these descendents, as my ancestors were listed as white in all the censuses in which I found them. Unfortunately, my WILLIAMS and TAYLOR families from the Hollidaysburg area have been very hard to track down, so I still have not made a positive connection. However, the aforementioned book has a sentence in it that furthers my belief in this connection: "He [he here refers to Daniel Hale WILLIAMS' father, Daniel WILLIAMS] bought property in town and land rich in iron ore on Brush Mountain." That certainly caught my eye, as my great-great-great grandparents, Henry WILLIAMS and Margaret (NOEL) WILLIAMS show up living on the side of Brush Mountain in the 1860 census, having taken over the home of Lovecia (or Louisa) WILLIAMS, who I assume to have been a relative of Henry's. In fact, Henry and Margaret ended up raising Lovecia's youngest children, the twins Ann Eliza (WILLIAMS) Yingling (yes, there were TWO Anns living in the WILLIAMS' household) and Samuel WILLIAMS. I'm assuming that Lovecia died between 1859 and 1860, as an "L. WILLIAMS" is listed in the 1859 Catharine Township map on the Brush Mountain property. I know that Henry, at least, was living here until the mid-1870s and, we believe, he and Margaret were both buried in the WILLIAMS Cemetery during the 1870s, which used to be on the side of Brush Mountain but has since been replaced by an electrical tower (thanks to Pennelec, who seems to think they have no responsibility in the matter). Now, is the property where Lovecia lived the same as the property purchased by Daniel Williams? If so, why? What relationship was she to him? What relationship was she to Henry? I would appreciate any leads that someone might have to help us out. Thanks! Lee Taylor Towson, MD
Hello Does anyone have any information on William Henry and Ellen Johnson Durborow, parents of Harry Ernest Durborow? Harry was b. April 23, 1867 and was buried on August 4, 1940. He married Sadie M. Lantz who was born December 15, 1869 and died June 22, 1898. Harry then married Catherine Alward on September 6, 1899. From information that I have, Harry worked for the railroad as a machinist. He worked in Altoona and then moved to New Kensington, PA (Westmoreland County). My grandmother, Margaretta, the only child of Sadie and Harry, was born in Altoona but I don't know where Harry resided before that. Any help would be appreciated. Glenda Givens

Bellwood Harvey Figart, wife and son, have occupied the new dwelling recently built by L. R. Kyper. W. F. Balsbach is confined to his home by illness. Mrs. Robert Pratton returned home after spending the week-end in Harrisburg. James Uhl returned home from over seas where he will spend a few days with his parents and will return over seas again. Ralph Isenberg, wife and daughter are spending a few days with Mr. Isenberg's mother at Alexandria. Miss Mary Cornmesser is visiting friends in Petersburg. --------------------------------------------------------------- Roaring Spring Bare park, the public playground donated to the borough by D. M. Bare, will be formally opened on Friday evening with a splendid program of exercises. District Attorney Marion Patterson will be the principal speaker of the occasion and there will also be other addresses and music by the Roaring Spring band. The matter of turning the Park avenue grove into a public park has involved much labor and heavy expense, all of which has been brought about without asking the people for money with which to carry on the work. Mr. Bare furnished the big portion of the funds in addition to donating the park, while the business men of the town also contributed liberally. Under the direction of the borough school board, through whom the park was donated by Mr. Bare, the work of transformation has progressed rapidly and beyond the fact that a sidewalk has not been laid, in completed. Now it is up to the people of the borough to make use of the park as intended by the donor and it is hoped that a representative audience will attend the exercises on Friday evening. Returning from his annual vacation last week Professor H. B. King, supervising principal of the local public schools is busy arranging for the opening of the 1920-21 term next Tuesday, September 7. A few of the conditions which must be complied with by the pupils and interesting information for parent, teacher and student, alike, are pointed out by Professor King. Owing to the crowded conditions in the lower grades it will be necessary to have two sessions. No child will be admitted without a vaccination certificate. All children who will be 6 years of age some time during the school year, will be admitted provided they enter within two weeks after the opening of the school term. On Friday evening of this week an important meeting of the teachers will be held to arrange for the opening of the schools. On Saturday morning at 9:30 o'clock in the High school building an examination will be held for the students of the eighth grade who failed in any branch of their work last year but who have made a thorough review of such work during the summer and desire to be examined. The Roaring Spring Light, Heat and Power company has notified its patrons that effective Oct. 1, 1920, all charges for light, heat and power will be advanced 26 per cent, except the minimum monthly charges which will be advanced 20 per cent, and the minimum charge for installation, which is not advanced. The tremendous advance in the cost of coal is given as the reason for the advance. This is the second advance in rates made by the firm this year, a new schedule of rates carrying with them a 25 per cent increase becoming effective on Jan. 1, 1920. The minimum charge of light in the borough will now be $1.50 per month, instead of $1.25, the present rate and $1 the rate prevailing last September. David P. McGee, well known Pennsy shopman, was pleasantly surprised at his home on Monday evening by friends and relatives who gathered to honor him on his 56th birthday. The feature of the evening was the elaborate dinner served by Mrs. McGee, spring chicken forming the chief piece de resistance. An enjoyable evening was passed by all present, the number including J. P. Martin, Miss Sadie Garber, Miss Sara Hite, Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Hanley, Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Butler, Mr. and Mrs. George Dick, Mr. and Mrs. P. S. McGee, Charles and Merrill Butler, Jean and Doris Dick, Misses Nellie and Bessie McGee, Mr. and Mrs. D. F. McGee and C. M. McGee. With the arrival of cooler weather Roaring Spring people who have been spending part of the summer camping at points in this and in Bedford county are returning home. A party consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Mock and children, Mr. and Mrs. George Dick and daughters, Jean and Doris, returned early this week from Hughes station where they spent more than a week. A feature of trip was a groundhog hunt by the lady members of the party, the quartet of women digging out three groundhogs on the Friday previous to their return. The catch graced the table of the campers on Sunday. The male members of the party landed five groundhogs, making a total of eight caught in the week. Fish were also plenty in that section and the party thoroughly enjoyed the week in the open. A party of campers including Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Hileman, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Hileman, Bruce Brumbaugh, Mrs. Charles Wright, and two daughters, Julia and Pauline, returned from a most enjoyable outing in Loysburg gap, where they occupied a cottage. On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Allen Shoenfelt, Mr. and Mrs. Collins Shoenfelt, Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Butler and sons Charles and Merrill, C. C. Wright and Mr. and Mrs. P. S. McGee motored to the gap and took dinner with the party. Mr. and Mrs. Blair Snyder, Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Butler and a party of friends also spend the week-end camping in the gap. Mr. and Mrs. E. I. Brenneman and son, Johnson, have returned from an extended visit with relatives in Maine and other New England states. City Criminal Matters Tramps in Abundance-Three Common Drunks-Seven Young Tourists The weather was rather cool around the edges last night, and as a consequence the floating population, commonly denominated tramps, patronized the roost in the city building rather freely, eighteen of the roosters applying for quarters, which were furnished them until this morning at 5 o'clock when they were turned loose. At the 10 o'clock love feast this morning, when the gates were swung ajar, the first boozer to walk up the stairs was James Buchanan. James, not satisfied with holding the Presidential chair down while the war of rebellion was working up, got too full of o-be-joyful last night and was pulled in by officer Calderwood. He contributed $3.00. Next on the list was John Saylor whom officer Roe had taken off the street because he had looked upon the inebriate's cup too often. $300 fine jingled in his ears and then three bright silver dollars jingled upon the Mayor's desk. Milton Stoler, another victim of too much tangle foot, fell under the gaze and came within reach of the long arms of officer Calderwood, which combination of circumstances resulted in Milton taking a rest in the cooler, facing the Mayor and contribution $3.00 to the involuntary relief department. After a portion of the night had been spent upon his downy couch by Railroad Officer Houck, that gentleman started out through the yard at an early hour to see whether everything was O. K. in his bailiwick, and while on his rounds he discovered in a box car seven young tourists whom he took under his wings and wafted to the bug nest. They were later stood up in a row before the Mayor to whom they gave their names as John Marshall, Joseph Brown, Robert Jones, Martin Golden, Harry Evans, Edward Patton and George Kelley. Four were white and three were black, and all were sentenced to pay a fine of $2.00, and in default of payment were sent to jail at Hollidaysburg for a period of five days. It is commonly reported around town that the man who lost $800 at the gaming table, and his brother, who has brought suit against the owner of the building, are not the parties who were most severely wounded during the series of engagements with the "tiger," but that a number of the "smooth-haired," "silk hatted" gentleman of the city are the ones who most keenly felt the sharp claws of the beast, and that it is these who are the power behind the push. Be this as it may Alderman Akers now has the case clearly in his hands, and the people will look to him to uphold the majesty of the law and see to it that there is no funny business indulged in by way of a settlement. ------------------------------------------- Personal Pencilings Mrs. Daniel Harris and Mrs. W. Fink and Charles Conrad, of Tyrone, were visitors in the city last evening. Mrs. John Black, one of Huntingdon's first class citizens, is at present the guest of J. S. Elway and family at their home on Eighth avenue. Mr. Frank Thompson, of the Adams Express Company, has resigned his position in the office here and will return to his home in Curwensville. Mr. J. H. Nicodemus, for many years with Gable & Co., has resigned his position with them and will hereafter be identified with the interests of Fay, Hutchison & Co. Come to Time, Gentleman There is a just complaint on part of the Secretary of the Board of Health that the physicians of the city, or rather some of them, are derelict in the duty of making returns of births, deaths, etc., thus hindering the work of the Board and detaining the work of making up the yearly report. Some of the ministers are also slow about making returns of marriages performed by them, and others give just what information they have to, and that with bad grace. This state of affairs should not exist. These records are required by law to be kept, they are of value, and no one of the standing of a physician or minister in the community should throw any impediment in the way of their proper keeping. ------------------------------ Sheriff's Sales The Arbitration Room of the Court House, at Hollidaysburg, was crowded at 10 o'clock this morning with an interesting throng of spectators to witness the quarterly Sheriff's Sales of the properties of delinquent debtors. It's abit late to reply, but I have stayed at the Wye Motel twice. It is convenient, clean, comfortable and very reasonably priced. And, for breakfast try The Dream (us oldtimers remember it as Dave's Dream!) it's located on Rt. 22 at the east end of town & just before where you would turn onto Scotch Valley Road & BCGS. Nancy
