    1. Unidentified subject!
    2. This was in the "Citizens Voice" newspaper. I think (but am not positive) that the cemetery they are speaking of is in Luzerne county. I thought it might be of interest to everyone. People with loved ones buried in Good Shepherd Memorial Park in Plains Township are planning to put their heads together to see what their options are. "I've been trying to get people together for the past three or four years," said Charles Alfano. He goes to Good Shepherd every week to visit his parents' crypts. While there on Memorial Day, Alfano got to talking to a woman from Old Forge who told him how concerned she and her husband were about the state of the cemetery. Alfano was going to contact Ann Grudzinski, who has also been trying to get something done about the cemetery, but she contacted him first. They decided to hold the meeting for all those who have concerns about Good Shepherd at Alfano's shop, Heavenly Ham, on Kidder Street in Wilkes-Barre on June 6 at 6 p.m. "We would just like to talk to the people and see what they would like us to do," Alfano said. Grudzinski, Alfano and many others have contacted and filed complaints with various organizations and agencies, seeking advice and assistance, but with limited success. Grudzinski has been contacting people who have plots at Good Shepherd, and said she is also trying to find a lawyer who is willing to volunteer an hour of his or her time to tell the people what their rights are. "We're asking if there's any attorney out there who can help us by giving us an hour of his or her time and giving us an idea of what we can do," Grudzinski said. "We don't know where to go. We don't know what kind of legal rights we have." Grudzinski's main issue is holding Good Shepherd's current owner, Larry Deminski, accountable for extra money she feels he has taken unfairly from people, particularly senior citizens, over the years. "Like a man who put out money for a stone seven years ago who never got it," she gave as an example. Grudzinski is also worried about where the money would go when Deminski sells the cemetery, and whether the perpetual care fund would be restored. A public auction, scheduled for May 31, was postponed. Instead, the Glenn Geyer Auction Co. is taking sealed bids only for the 6.98- acre property, with a minimum price of $300,000. Alfano said he is concerned about who buys the cemetery, and whether it would be possible to develop the extra acreage. "There's no potential for anybody to buy it," Alfano said. "There's no crypts left for sale - the ones there, who's going to buy them in the condition it's in?" The mausoleum needs cleaning, but with the electricity cut off on the property, vacuuming is impossible, so people have been trying to keep it swept as best they can in an attempt to make it presentable. "My parents lived in a house they kept immaculate," Alfano said. "They don't deserve to be resting in a place like this." ©The Citizens Voice 2003

    2. Marge Wilcox
    3. To the best of my knowledge, the terms "Dagos" and "Huns" were disparaging names for Italians and Germans. My parents told me never, never to use either one. I recall an incident my husband and I were at a neighborhood party, and one man called another "a dago" which was greatly resented, and the man of Italian heritage said, "Only another Italian can use that name for another!" Just about every nationality has a slang term for its members but most are considered to be hateful and sign of great prejudice. These kinds of terms are on a scale with calling a person of African heritage the "N" word. It was also a sign of little intelligence or education. You would never find those terms used in today's newspapers! I'm 76 and have many nationalities in my heritage and there are lots of knicknames I could be called although my ancestors were all here before 1870 and most before 1800. That's what makes America great! Marge Wilcox - Brighton, MI ----- Original Message ----- From: Terry A. 1. [PABLAIR-L] Definition of Terms, cont'd...Matthew Calvin, Esq.
    2. As a non-legal sidelight to this mention in the Altoona paper, Matthew Calvin, Esq., was the son of Samuel Calvin, one of Blair Co.'s first Congressmen in the early 1850's, and Rebecca Smith Blodget, daughter of Bedford Co. attorney John A. Blodget and Anna Fletcher. Matthew started out in his father's firm in Hollidaysburg, and did pretty well for himself. His son Matthew Jr., in turn, followed painting as his career. Samuel Calvin and wife Rebecca Blodget Calvin, along with her parents John and Anna Fletcher Blodget, are buried in the Lutheran Cemetery in Hollidaysburg. David Fletcher Richmond, VA

    1. [PABLAIR-L] Definition of Terms
    2. What you are faced with here is the rather arcane language so endearing to the legal profession. This case deals with a rather mundane matter - a distribution of Mr. Kesiah Hunter's funds after the probate of his estate. Evidently Mr. Mathew Calvin, Esq., was appointed by the court to audit the funds held by Mr. T. B. Hunter (probably a close relative of the deceased), who served as the Administrator of the deceased's estate. Someone (possibly a family member), creditors, or the court itself filed exceptions (disagreement) to portions of Mr. Calvin's report. The court's ruling was that all the money from Mr. Kesiah Hunter's estate be paid out at that time by Mr. T. B. Hunter (the Administrator) - except for the "exceptions" noted by the court. [The nature of the "exceptions" is not covered in the brief note from the Altoona Tribune. An educated guess would be that they involved a matter of contention by one or more creditors, the disposition of which would be subject to subsequent judicial process.] Probate matters vary considerably by State, locales, and time eras. Evidently at the time of this probate action, it was necessary in Blair County for a court-appointed auditor to audit and report to the court before the final distribution of assets was made from the estate of the deceased.

    3. The following was in the Altoona Tribune in 1886 (thank you, Annie :). Could someone translate this for me....what does "not affected by exception" mean? And was it normal for an auditor to be involved? Ambrose-In the matter of exceptions to the report of Mathew Calvin, esq., auditor appointed to distribute the funds in the hands of T. B. Hunter, administrator of Kesiah Hunter, deceased. On motion it was ordered and decreed that the administrator pay out all money not affected by exception.
