    2. DANGERS OF COASTING Two Boys Injured and a Runaway Caused by the Street Being Used for Improper Purposes. It has repeatedly been said that it was a wonder that more persons were not injured because of the indiscriminate coasting indulged in on the streets, and sidewalks of the city by boys of both large and small growth. A few accidents have already been recorded and last night and this morning added two more to the list. Last night a boy named Knepper, in company of a number of others, was coasting down the sidewalks on Second street, and coming to a place in the pavement where it slanted considerably toward the street, the sled on which young Knepper and some others were seated, ran off and into the ditch at the side making a pile up of considerable dimensions, in which Knepper was badly hurt, and had to be carried to his home, where a physician was summoned to attend his injuries. This morning a party of boys were coasting on Eleventh street, between Seventh and Eighth avenues, with what is known as a "family sled." On making one of their trips down the hill the sled, heavily loaded with the boys, ran into the delivery sled of Bell & Young, badly breaking it, causing the horse to take fright and run away, and in so doing completely ruined a set of harness. When the boys crashed into the delivery sled they were thrown about in a promiscuous manner, and one little girl, who was in the party, was thrown entirely over the sled. Harry Zeak, one of the boys, whose home is on Sixth avenue, between Eleventh and Twelfth streets, had one of his legs broken and had to be carried to his home, where a physician was summoned and reduced the fracture. Another accident, from a similar cause, occurred on Green avenue last night, a boy named Cherry having his nose broken by running into a store-box. All parties are to be notified by the police to cease using the streets for coasting purposes, and any who refuse to obey this order will be arrested for disorderly conduct and treated accordingly. --------------- Notice to Firemen I have received from Hon. John Dean, through Mr. P. H. Walls, a check of $244.75 for services rendered by the firemen of Altoona at the late fires at Frugality. The firemen can get their money by calling at the residence of Chief F. P. Moloy, 934 Seventeenth street. ------------------- The June Term of Court The Legal Mill Merrily Grinding Away Sessions of the Blair county court of Quarter Sessions were held yesterday morning and afternoon. Following is the record of proceedings up to last evening. A rule was granted on Joseph Kandleblader to show cause why he should not pay weekly allowance for support of bastard child. A rule was granted, at the instance of J. L. Calvert, to show cause why municipal lien No. 2,163 should not be marked satisfied. In the case of Samuel March vs. Aaron Leahy and C. and J. Leahy, rules were granted to show cause why judgment should not be entered for want of sufficient affidavit of defense. The view for a public road in Taylor township was confirmed absolutely. H. L. McCully was discharged from imprisonment in the county jail under the insolvent laws. The Grand Jury made returns on the following bills of indictment: Com. vs. Albert Fulton. Violation of the boarding house act. A true bill. Com. vs. David Hanley, William Noll and James Malone. Violation of fish laws. Com. vs. Emil Meyer. Selling liquor without a license. A true bill. Com. vs. William Everts. Assault and battery on Mrs. L. W. Crider. A true bill. Com. vs. Andrew Bennerjr., Samuel Benner. Malicious mischief. A true bill. Disposition was made of the following cases on the list for trial: Com. vs. Joseph Freshkorn. Furnishing liquor to minors. The case was continued to next sessions on account of illness of defendant. Com. vs. Lewis Davis. Charged with entering a building in Altoona owned by Louis Plack, cutting the lead pipes conveying water to the water closets and otherwise injuring the property. The defendant submitted to the charge. Com. vs. James I. Ginter. Charged with forging the name of John Cupp to a promissory note for $25 and payable to the First National bank of Tyrone. This case was tried and jury found the defendant guilty in manner and form as indicated. Com. vs. Jacob Cohn. This was a case of assault and battery, which grew out of an altercation between Cohn and J. S. Smith, two merchants of Tyrone, over business matters. The lie was passed between them and Cohn struck Smith repeatedly while in a heat of passion. No defense was made and the defendant was sentenced to pay a $5 fine and $28.47, the costs of prosecution; further to enter into recognizance to keep the peace for one year. --------------------- Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair

Died- In Canoe Valley, on the 13th instant, Mary Hull, daughter of Mrs. Hull, of the malignant fever, prevailing in that place. It is to be hoped, however, from the public spirit of the Congregation, that a new one will soon be erected on a more modern plan than the former. ------------------------------ FOUND On the road leading from Huntingdon to Petersburg, some time since, a POCKET-BOOK containing a number of papers of importance to the owner. 2. Hollidaysburg Messers. J. Luden Henry, John O'Neill and Edward S. Ritter, viewers appointed by the court to lay out a road, connecting the old Hollidaysburg turnpike with the Lakemont road held a special meeting on Saturday last, in regard to same. They decided that the new road should begin on the Hollidaysburg turnpike at a point where Good's land enters it from Eldorado, then along the line between the Lane and Campbell's farms, to the Lakemont road, entering it near the residence of Mr. James Fasic, just south of Lakemont. This improvement will be a great convenience to drivers who desire to reach Lakemont park and other points in that vicinity, inasmuch as the long drive around the old plank road crossing south of Llyswen can be eliminated. At the regular monthly meeting of the Hollidaysburg school board held last evening the truant officer reported having found twenty-eight cases of truancy during the past month. Superintendent L. A. Marsh reported that 322 boys and 283 girls, or a sum total of 605 pupils were attending the schools. The average attendance is 437, and the percentage of attendance is 94. The board of directors signified a desire to contribute to the success of the Lincoln centenary meeting to be held on Friday evening, and the public school teachers and pupils will take an active part in the program. A special meeting for men only will be held on Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the Methodist Episcopal church of this place. A men's chorus of twenty-four voices will lead the singing. Mr. C. A. Lucas, a worker in the Altoona Young Men's Christian association will address the meeting. The revival services which are being held each evening this week are largely attended and most interesting. Up to this time nineteen persons have signified their desire to become Christians. The public is cordially invited to attend. The following directors of the Citizen's National bank of this place were elected to serve the ensuing year of 1909, at a special meeting of the stockholders held yesterday afternoon: Peter S. Duncan, John K. McLanahan, jr., Lynn A. Brua, Oliver H. Hewit, Thomas J. Baldridge, Dr. Jonathan T. Leet and John S. Vipond. Mr. William P. Winters of Hollidaysburg and Miss Cora M. young of Duncansville were united in holy wedlock last evening at St. Michael's Catholic church of this place, by the rector, Rev. Father George Bock. The attendants were Mr. William Metzgar and Miss Grace Shoemaker, both of Hollidaysburg. The following list of candidates for council will be submitted to the Republican electors at the coming primary elections: Second ward, John P. Jacobs, Blair B. Young; Third ward, Dr. Samuel C. Smith, George W. Williams. At the annual meeting of stockholders of the First National Bank of this place held yesterday, the following directors were chosen to serve the ensuing year: Jesse L. Hartman, Dr. A. L. Garver, W. A. Huff, D. L. Dillinger, W. I. Woodcock, James W. Gromiller and Harry W. Webber. --------------------- Funeral Notices The funeral of Mrs. Celia Wolfberg took place today, interment being made at the Hebrew cemetery. The funeral of James F. McNoldy will take place tomorrow afternoon, with services in the First United Brethren church at 2 o'clock. Interment will be made in Fairview cemetery. Friends may view the remains this evening between the hours of 7 and 9 o' clock. 2. Recent Weddings At half-past 6 on Thursday evening at St. John's Catholic church Mr. James M. Stevens of Altoona and Miss Florence Storm, formerly of Pittsburgh, were united in marriage by Rev. Father Brielly. The attendants were Mr. Joseph A. Sanders, of Altoona, and Miss Ida M. Waltz, of Pittsburgh. Mr. and Mrs. Stevens will go to housekeeping immediately, and will reside on Margaret avenue. On August 18th, 1886, at 8 o'clock p. m., in St. James German Evangelical Lutheran church of Altoona, Pa., by Rev. H. J. H. Lemcke, Mr. Charles F. Gamber and Miss Anna Mary Steurer, both of Altoona, were united in the bonds of matrimony. The bridal party was attended by Mr. Martin Mueller and Miss Magdelena Steurer. At 1 o'clock a. m., the young couple left with the fast line on a trip east. ----------------------------- Struck by Lightning Mr. Frank Cox, who lives on the Ake farm, some distance below Blair Furnace, was engaged in hauling in oats on Monday last. He was on the wagon when a bolt of lightning struck the load, rendering him unconscious and causing him to fall to the ground, fortunately landing on his feet. A Mr. Nearhoof, who was pitching the oats onto the wagon, was also stunned. The lightning struck one of the horses attached to the wagon, knocking it senseless for a time. ------------------------------ Both Snakes were Killed Mr. Joseph Seguin, residing on the Allegheny mountain, on Saturday last was picking blackberries in company with several ladies at the Green Spring camp. While thus engaged, one of the party noticed two huge rattlesnakes snugly coiled up on a board and notified Mr. Seguin. That gentleman immediately brought his trusty shotgun into service, it being fortunately near by, and succeeded in killing both reptiles at one shot. One of them sported twelve rattles and the other fourteen. ------------------------------------------- Snyder Township Teachers Thursday Superintendent Likens held the annual examination of applicants for the schools of Snyder township. At the close of the examination the school board met and made the following appointments: Bald Eagle, L. H. Woomer; Pines, Miss M. A. Waring; Elk Run, H. G. Baird; Bangham, Miss Belle Miller; Hickory Bottom, J. J. Grazier; Pike, Miss Sadie Dixon;???? Mr. S. B. Green. Length of term, six months. Salary, $35. ------------------- City and Country Harry Nicewonger, the 15 year old son of T. H. Nicewonger, employed by C. T. Sharpe & Co., butchers, Eleventh avenue, while investigating a sausage cutter Friday, had his right knee caught in the machine and very painfully bruised. Our merchants and others should be on the lookout for a young man who is canvassing the city selling a plating for show cases. The article is inferior and will not stand the test, as an Eleventh avenue merchant is welling to testify, having been taken in Friday. The Taylor manufacturing company, of Chambersburg, is building two 125-horse power engines, one 80-horse power engine and three boilers for the electric light plant of this city. The bricklayers are at work on the building on Tenth avenue. A force of men are engaged at work excavating for the stonework of the Seventh street bridge. A large derrick has been erected by which means the dirt is raised to the street and then hauled back to help fill in the approaches. The work will be rapidly pushed forward. We take pleasure in called the attention of the trade to the card appearing in our paper to-day of "M. Oppenheimer & Co., this being the largest and oldest, as well as the only house in Pittsburgh, who manufacture an entire line of clothing and keep a full line of woolens and tailor trimmings for the merchant tailor trade. It will pay the trade generally to give this house a call before making their purchases. 1. [PABLAIR-L] Altoona Street Question on 1930 Census
    2. jan stitz
    3. I just received the death certificate of my ggrandfather, James R. WEAVER. His address was given as 835 E. 6th Ave., Logan Twp., (Altoona was given as the city, but crossed out). He died in Jan. 1931, but I haven't been able to find him in the 1930 census using the Ancestry.com census index. I then used Ancestry and tried to search the people who lived on E. 6th Ave. I used Blair Co., Altoona, District 6 on image 23 and found 6th Ave, but the highest house number was 831. This was listed as 6th Ave., but on his death certificate, it was listed as E. 6th Ave. Could someone tell me if I need to try to find an E. 6th Ave. rather than 6th Ave.? Thank you for any help on this. Jan Stitz jstitz@stark.kent.edu
