23 Years Ago Today >From the Mirror Files. First Ward Republicans endorsed D. K. Howe and J. W. Ebert and Seventh Ward Republicans Charles W. Emeigh and Howard Manley for common council. Congressman J. D. Hicks and Dr. W. D. Hall were at Gallitzin where they installed the officers of Thomas McCloskey post of the Grand Army. The second anniversary of the Rescue Mission was observed with meetings in the First and Second Lutheran churches, at which addresses were made by Colonel Hadley through whose efforts it was founded. George Schimminger retired from the drug business to become a member of the firm conducting the Altoona brewery. Ex-Mayor W. T. Howard was appointed a messenger in the house of representatives at Harrisburg. He had the backing of Chris Magee of Pittsburgh. M. N. Fagley was elected president of the board of county commissioners for the year. The law partnership existing between W. L. Woodcock and C. B. Clark was dissolved. Dr. John T. Christy, for many years a leading physician in Altoona, died at the University hospital in Philadelphia. He was born near Gallitzin, was aged 67, studied with Dr. Aristide Rodriquez at Hollidaysburg and in the University of Pennsylvania and located in Altoona in 1852, at which time he established the first drug store in the city. ------------------------------------------- New Enterprise Word was received here Monday by Elder and Mrs. Levi Holsinger that the wife of their son Lester had died at their home in Washington, D.C. on Sunday evening of pneumonia following an attack of flu. About a week ago their son and family had visited the former's parents when Mrs. Holsinger was enjoying good health, so that the sad news coming so soon after was a shock to the friends here. Because of the prevalence of the Spanish flu, the schools of South Woodbury are all closed. Mrs. C. W. Gensimore of Bedford visited friends in the village recently. South Woodbury township went over the top in the purchase of fourth Liberty loan bonds. Mrs. O. S. Ober, who passed through a slight attack of the influenza, is again able to be up from her bed. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Metzger, of College Park, Md., are visiting the former's mother, Mrs. Catharine Metzger. Wednesday of last week S. F. Campbell, received word from Camp Greene, M. C., that his son Ira, who is in training there, was seriously ill from an attack of Spanish flu. The day following Mr. Campbell went to Altoona, where he thought he might be able to get later news, but failing in his attempt he continued his trip on to the place where his boy was encamped, where he arrived Saturday evening, and learning that although his son had been very sick, he was at that time much improved and on his return home Tuesday said he felt certain that he would fully recover in a short time. Dr. I. D. Metzger of Pittsburgh, who has recently enlisted in the United States service, medical department, stopped here a few days the fore part of the week to visit relatives prior to his going to Camp Taylor, Ky. He holds the rank of captain in the medical corps. Christ and Orville Holsinger have gone to Washington, D.C. to attend the funeral of their brother Lester's wife. Mrs. S. F. Campbell recently received a letter from their son Guy in France, in which he states he is well and getting along fine. The first of a series of entertainments scheduled for here during the fall and coming winter, and which was announced for Saturday evening, Oct. 26, has, on account of the flue epidemic, been postponed until Saturday evening, Nov. 9. Reserve seat tickets will be on sale at the bank Nov. 7, 8, and 9. ------------------------ BLUE KNOB The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Seymour died Sunday last of yellow fever, aged 8 days. Mr. and Mrs. Milton Ritchey have received word that their daughter, Mrs. Allan Diehl of Johnstown, was taken to the hospital, suffering from a relapse after being afflicted with influenza. Among the influenza victims are the family of William Mosel, being Mrs. Mosel and sons James and Charles, daughter Sara, adopted daughter Miss Anna Keifer and Gerald Wilson, visiting there. All are improving at this time. Mr. and Mrs. also received word from the St. Francis hospital of Pittsburgh that their son Oliver is able to be up after an attack of influenza. Another son of Mrs. Mosel, Hugh Earnest, of Camp Greene, N. C., also had the flu. He wrote to his mother that he thought he was over the worst. Misses Bessie and Thelma Ritchey also were flu sufferers. Mrs. Emory Diehl of Claysburg is spending several weeks with her parents, recuperating after a severe attack of typhoid fever. Mrs. Albert Ritchey of Duncansville and Mr. and Mrs. Ira Long and family of Altoona, spent several days with their mother, Mrs. Sara Long. Mr. Long spent some time in the woods hunting. The family of D. C. George is very much indisposed, Mrs. George having grip and kidney trouble, Miss Elsie has grippe and neuralgia, Miss Mabel grippe and nervous trouble. Misses Vera and Evelyn, catarrh of the stomach. All are improving slowly. ---------------------------------------------- Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair
First, the genealogical data... >From the cemetery books at the Pioneer Historical Society, I found 3 children of Priscilla TAYLOR ALLER (my half great-great-great aunt) buried at the Brumbaugh Cemetery (the book says it's in Liberty Township off of Rte. 26, but it also says it's north of Fredericksburg on Clover Creek in Blair County, does anyone know exactly where it is?). Priscilla TAYLOR ALLER died in Johnstown in 1920. Her children (and their children) that are buried in the Brumbaugh Cemetery are: Chester A. HOLMES (W.W. I) 1890-1965 wife Lillie A. (ALLER) 1895-19 (this cemetery was read in 1971 and Lillie did not die until 1973, we believe) C. A. ALLER 1873-1945 "Two ALLER Children" are buried here, though no more information than that is given Elliot D. ALLER 1881-1944 wife Fannie J. (Fannie Jane MCDONALD) 1886-1965 son B.L. 1924 son William A. 28 Jan 1906-25 Feb 1908 Infant 1918-1918 There are several other MCDONALD's buried in this cemetery, presumably some of them are related to Fannie. Also, in the Knobsville Brethren Cemetery in Fulton County are buried Christian ALLER 1813-25 Dec 1900 and wife Susan 1810-9 Sep 1875. Now for the shameless plug... I stopped at the Pioneer Historical Society on this past Friday to do some research before going to Old Bedford Village for a Civil War Re-enactment. I discovered that Old Bedford Village contains a wonderful collection of many old buildings dating back to the early (at least from the standpoint of the European settlers) history of Bedford County (in addition to some reproduction buildings to add to the atmosphere. >From what I understand, Old Bedford Village has been in financial difficulty for years and, though it is currently under excellent management, is struggling to maintain its existence. Since most of us on these lists had ancestors who would probably recognize some of the buildings at Old Bedford Village, I thought this would be an appropriate place to mention that we should support it by visiting it and telling all of our acquaintances about the place (I don't know if they accept outright donations, but helping to fill the place with interested visitors is one of the best ways to perpetuate our common history). I personally feel a tingle whenever I come upon buildings and/or locations that I know my ancestors saw/visited decades/centuries ago, and would be quite upset if a treasure such as this were lost. So tell your friends, relatives, work acquaintances, etc., about this wonderful place! Lee TAYLOR
Edward UPDIKE was the second husband of Anna Belle (JAMES) HANEY, who was widowed in 1916. Am sharing his obit with the list as it contains surnames UPDIKE, CALDERWOOD, HINEY, IRVIN. Also hope someone on the list can answer my related questions..... 1. Can anyone tell me where I might write for records of the Columbia Avenue Methodist Church??? 2. Can anyone help me interpret the undertaker's name (see notes from death cert below) - handwriting looks like "Fuoss & Glass, Tyrone" or "Tuoss & Glass, Tyrone". Are records from this place still available? If so, where? 3. Edward and Anna Belle married Feb 11, 1919 (marriage performed in Hollidaysburg by Justice of the Peace Isaac M. IRVIN ... was Isaac M. IRVIN related to the Ray IRVIN mentioned in the obit????). In the 1920 census, Edward Updike [spelled "Updyke" in census] and his wife are living with her parents, John Christopher JAMES and Mary Alice (McMANAMY) JAMES, in Osceola, along with Anna Belle's two sons from her first marriage, and Edward's son William, born 16 Nov 1919 in Tyrone. About 9 months later, on July 6, 1920, Edward Updike entered the Blair Co Hospital where he died approx 18 months later OBIT Source: Altoona Mirror, Saturday Evening, December 23, 1922 DEATH RECORD. EDWARD UPDIKE A resident of Tyrone, died at the Blair county hospital at 5:52 last evening. He was born at Spruce Creek 34 years ago, the son of James and Jane Updike. He was a member of the Columbia Avenue Methodist church and was affiliated with the I.O.R.M. Surviving are his parents, his wife and one son, William, also four sisters and one brother: Mrs. J.B. Calderwood of Ironsville, PA., Mrs. Charles Hiney, Mrs. Ray Irvin, Gertrude and Walter, all of Tyrone. Funeral services will be held at the home of his parents in Tyrone Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. Interment in the cemetery at Franklinville. Former residence - Tyrone PA Burial - Franklinville Cem, Dec 24 1922 Undertaker F(T?)uoss & Glass, Tyrone In closing, a sad note and a family mystery-- perhaps someone can help???? I researched cause of death..."paresis" is the term for a kind of syphillis with an 8-10 year incubation period. It results in loss of motor coordination and eventual insanity. Apparently he contracted it long before meeting my grandmother. She died 20 years after him, of liver cancer, so apparently was not permanently affected. However, this probably explains why the baby Willliam Updike (now deceased) was raised to believe he was a HANEY, and did not learn of the existence of Edward UPDIKE until the 1980's when William ordered a copy of his birth cert. to get his retirement pension. Perhaps this also explains why the obit lists all of Edward's siblings and his son by name, but does not name his wife. I suspect there was a lot of ill-will surrounding the whole event. And now the mystery... In the late 1920s/early 30s, an old, frail woman had come in a chauffered limo seeking "little Billy Updike" who then lived with his mother and her third husband, in Williamsport. The old woman said she'd been seeking "littly billy for years as he was her only direct heir, and wanted to leave her money to him "so the state wouldn't get it". The woman was told the child's name was "William HANEY" and there was no "Billy Updike" there. So the old woman went away. In the 1980's, this was researched by William's lawyer, but the money had gone to the state decades before and was not recoverable. Apparently the lawyer discovered the amount had been in the millions -- $17 million, William told his daughter in a phone call. I have never been able to determine who this woman might have been. Correspondence with various SIMPSON/UPDIKE researchers has not turned up anyone in the family tree who was a single or widowed elderly female multimillionaire, who would have considered "little Billy" to be her only remaining heir... there were scads of children born to Edward Updike's siblings. I suspect this mystery will never be solved as William's daughter has not been able to find any of the legal correspondence dating from the 1980's. But if anyone has any ideas or suggestions how I might pursue this, I would be grateful! Luann (DDuBarry@aol.com)

Frankstown As this is the first letter from this, the oldest town on the Juniata, in the year 1909, we call especial attention to the fact that the Mirror, Altoona's leading paper, will find its way to many homes it has not reached as yet, and our future letters will give all the news as well as some historical facts concerning the Juniata valley every week. We also promise the patrons that the carrier will be informed that the paper must be delivered as soon as it arrives here. Further we would say to the people who get mail on the R. F. D. routes, that if they subscribe for the "People's Paper" it will reach them in good time. Give your subscription to Paul H. Mentzer or send same to Box 14, Frankstown, Pa. Sharp was on trial charged with assault and battery, preferred by Constable John L. Roe. Constable Roe stated that on Dec. 24 he went to Sharp's house, 2019 Fourteenth avenue, to replevin a sewing machine. After he was in the house some time, he went to open a door and Sharp struck him a blow in the face and also on the arm. Sharp's brother also took part and rained a few blows on the officer from the rear. Sharp, the defendant, stated that the officer used bad language before his wife and children, and that the officer struck him first. Mrs. Sharp testified that Roe pushed her and struck Sharp first. This morning a jury returned a verdict of guilt as indicted. The defendant was directed to enter his own recognizance, conditioned for his appearance at March sessions, when Judge Shull, who tried the case, will be here to impose sentence. Harry Conrad pleaded guilt to the charge of fornication and bastardy. His sentence was deferred. In the larceny by bailee case against Antis Ellis, the jury found the defendant not guilty. There is an amazing site where you can quite literally find rare, old, or out-of-print books. It is really an antiquarian's and genealogists dream site. I found a number of rare and old books there re Pennsylvania (Tyrone of Today, both editions) and The History of the Susquehanna and Juniata Valleys (published in 1886, original ). They have old, out of the way, little bookstores from all over the world (as well as antiquarians who sell old books out of their homes) list their titles at this site and you can order through the site or email the seller directly. Fabulous site. Very efficient and very good. Definitely worth checking out if you are searching for old books, especially re genealogy. It's called www.abebooks.com Good luck, Sue
