CARROLLTOWN Miss Blanche Lieb and Misses Marceline and Mary Luther returned to their homes on Thursday evening after an absence of two weeks at Atlantic City and other western cities. The girls reported a real vacation. Miss Rose Mary Stevens is home from a three weeks visit with relatives in Altoona. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Edward Stevens. The seventh daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ben Randell at their residence at Sylvan park on Thursday morning. The couple have three sons. Mrs. Randell and the latest arrival are well. Mrs. Isadore Bender of Hastings spent Wednesday with relatives at Carrolltown. Dr. and Mrs. Albert Willson and son, Albert, Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Sharbaugh left Friday morning for Washington, D. C. after visiting several days with Attorney and Mrs. Fred J. Fees. The party intended motoring as far as Harrisburg on Friday and to Washington on Saturday. Mrs. Frank J. Myers, Mrs. George Hogue, and Mrs. J. E. Erkilla, the former two ladies of Ebensburg and the latter one from Detroit, Mich., were guest of Mrs. Fred Fees last Thursday. Dr. and Mrs. E. F. Arble attended the dinner served to eighty-five doctors and ladies at the Brandon hotel, Spangler on Thursday. The Cambria County Medical society held a business session at the hotel after the dinner and the ladies engaged in bridge. A crate of asbestos shingles caused some commotion in the church square, Main street, about 5:45 p.m. Thursday. The shingles were being delivered to another part of town and when passing into Carroll street, the crate fell from the truck in which it was loaded. Impact with the concrete broke the crate and scattered the contents about the highway, with a racket. Another machine passing through the square just missed the avalanche. ----------------- MARTINSBURG Mrs. Louise Layman has been confined to her bed sick for the last several days. Rev. J. L. Hall will be looking after the evangelistic work of the Brethren church in Bedford county on Sunday. Therefore there will be no preaching services in the First Brethren church at this place on Sunday. Miss Doris Ames, former teacher of economics in the Cove Vocational school, now an instructor in Norbeth school, accompanied by her mother of Wellsborough, are visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Bice. On Wednesday L. R. Over purchased of David Keag of Philadelphia, the large brick building on the corner of East Allegheny and South Market streets, consideration $10,000. The building is now occupied on the first floor in the front by the hardware of Nissley and Carper, D. S. Smelser, saddler and the Morrisons Cove bank. Nissley and Carper are now contemplating the purchasing of a lot on South Market street upon which to erect a store building. Mr. and Mrs. F. D. Baker, of Johnstown, paid a visit to Mrs. Baker's mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Brubaker, on Thursday. H. W. Burket, editor of the Martinsburg Herald, accompanied by his wife and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bolger, started on a ten days vacation on Friday, touring New York state and Canada. On Thursday the Aid society of the Church of the Brethren at Roaring Spring spent the day at the Morrisons Cove home. They brought with them some of the necessaries for a good dinner, which they shared with the guests of the home. ------------------- GORSUCH GETS PICTURE IN RETURN FOR SHOE The following letter was received on Friday by Charles Gorsuch, the Martinsburg blacksmith, the famous maker of miniature horse shoes. I am researching the GROVES of Blair County, specifically Hollidaysburg. My proven line is Charles GROVES married to Mary WINDEL on 26 July 1848 in Hollidaysburg. They are on the 1850 Hollidaysburg census, later moving to Allegany County, MD (1880 census). I believe Charles is the son of William GROVES who died in Hollidaysburg on 28 Jan 1849. I have no proof. I am seeking the following: 1. Mary WINDEL parents names from the Marraige Records. 2. Charles GROVES parents names from the Marraige Records. 3. Copy of Obituary for William GROVES which is in the Hollidaysburg Register newspaper on 31 Jan 1849. Hopefully it lists his children. 4. 1860 and 1870 Blair County census lookup for Charles GROVES (most likely Hollidaysburg area) I appreciate any help you can give me. My info is at http://combsfamily.tripod.com/groves.html Matt Combs Clemmons, NC _________________________________________________________________ Help STOP SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail

A Railroad Watchman Killed Tuesday evening a fatal accident occurred in the upper yards of the Pennsylvania railroad at Harrisburg. Between 5 and 6 o'clock Thomas Gallagher, employed as night watchman at the asylum crossing of the Pennsylvania railroad, in the performance of his duty, had occasion to attend to a team which was about to cross the main tracks at that point. He failed to notice a car which was being shifted on one of the tracks and was thrown down and his legs horribly cut and great gash made in his head. The unfortunate man was almost instantly killed. The deceased was about 52 years of age, resided at Harrisburg and has a son who is fireman on the Pennsylvania railroad. Mr. Gallager was favorably known for his kindness of heart and faithful and prompt attention to his duty. ------------------ Mr. John Witherow, a supervisor of Knox township, Clearfield county, was struck on the head by a heavy stringer while assisting to repair a bridge over Potts' Run, on Monday of last week, and injured so badly that he died soon after being taken to his home, about a mile distant. The stringer accidentally slipped from the hands of the men who were attempting to put it in place, and Mr. W., seeing his danger, jumped into the water, but failed to get out of the way of the falling log. The Catholics of Lilly, like their co-religionists at Gallitzin, are making arrangements for the holding of a two-days' picnic for the benefit of their new church and contemplated parsonage, and have selected the 3d and 4th of July, instead of the 4th and 5th, as at Gallitzin, for their proposed festivities. A better place for enjoyment or a better cause to assist cannot be found anywhere. Dancing, music, feasting and fun are the inducements held out to those who delight in such things. Our young friends Charles and Joseph Schwab, of Braddock, paid their respects to The Times office last evening. Charley and Joe are from Cambria county, and hold good positions at the Edgar Thomson Steel Works, the first named being near the head of heap in the engineering department. REVEALED A SKELETON Tin Roof Torn from its High Home Discloses Buried Bones of Twenty Years. There was a feature of Tuesday's wind and sleet storm in Altoona that discountenances any commonplace pranks of blown fences and washed out cellars. The interesting and gruesome discovery was made shortly after a large loose tin roof on the Phoenix block rattled clumsily and noisily to the street. Away under the south eaves, stowed tightly in a wooden box like a coffin, covered with dust and eaten by the elements were the bones of a human skeleton. It was not without trepidation that the men around the building first to find it, picked up some old medical books lying on the top of the box and proceeded to open the box itself. The bones are those of a medium sized man and were excellently preserved. It is presumed they were owned by a physician who formerly had rooms in the building and at some time or other he had packed it away there. The books are dated 1882, which makes it twenty years ago. -------------- DOINGS IN POLICE CIRCLES Cases Brought Before the Mayor and Aldermen of This City.
