The dec'd left our place on the Friday before her death, for home; and on Saturday evening, while sitting at the supper table, she took a cramp, and on Tuesday morning at 5 o'clock, she breathed her last. Surely, "in the midst of life, we are in death." Tyrone Star At his residence in Logan Township, in this county, on the evening of the 16th ult., Mr. RICHARD GLASGOW, in the 80th year of his age. He was among the early settlers of "Logan Valley" and was at the time of death one of the oldest men in the community. His life and death was a complete exemplification of that passage of Holy Writ, which says-"The days of our years are three score years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be four score years, yet is their strength, labour and sorrow, for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. ----------------------------- SHALL WE HAVE THE ENGINE? At a meeting of the citizens of Altoona, held at Keystone Hall, on Saturday evening, March 5th, to take into consideration the propriety of purchasing a fire engine, on motion, John Shoemaker was called to the chair, and J. E. Burchinell appointed secretary. The object of the meeting was stated by the Chairman. On motion of Wm. Boyden, a committee of two from each Ward, vs: Messrs, Jno. Shoemaker and Jacob Wagner, North Ward; A. C. Smyth and J. L. Ickes, East Ward; James Lowther and C. J. Mann, West Ward, were appointed to solicit subscriptions for the purpose of purchasing a Fire Engine. On motion of A. Maxwell, the committee were instructed to wait upon Thos. A. Scott, Esq., and endeavor to procure a location for an engine house between the main and branch tracks of the railroad. On motion adjourned, to meet at the call of the committee. John Shoemaker, Chairman J. E. Burchinell, Sec'y. ----------------- The following items which we clip from the Tyrone Star and the Harrisburg Patriot and Union, explain themselves and each other: Strange Conduct. On Wednesday night last, a young lady of this place, (whose name we suppress on account of her former respectability, and that of her parents), packed up her 'duds and trinkets,' disguised herself with a veil, green spectacles, & c., and took a passage on a train for Huntingdon, without the knowledge of her parents! The next day, her father followed her and brought her back. Her conduct has afflicted her parents very much, and it is to be hoped that she has learned a lesson which she will not soon forget. It has been intimated that a certain individual who was formerly a resident of this place for a short time, but who now lives in Huntingdon, had better "make himself scarce," lest his earthly career might suddenly be cut short! ELOPEMENT Our police officers received a telegraphic dispatch yesterday, from Mr. Cruther, a hotel keeper in Tyrone City, requesting them to arrest his daughter, who had eloped with a married man by the name of D. S. Africa. The officers were promptly at the depot, and awaited the arrival of the train, but one of the birds had been caged and the other had flown. The conductor, Mr. Weitzel, informed them that the would be happy bride, had been taken at Huntingdon, and escorted by to Tyrone, by her anxious parent. The Africa gentleman thinking that discretion was the better part of valor, sloped for parts unknown, and thus evaded the eagle eyes of our police. Such is the history of the elopement. -------------------------- Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair

    3. I was wondering if anyone is researching the family of John H. McConnell, b. abt. 1856. He married Lydia, b. abt. 1861. Their children that I know of include: Simon T. (abt. 1883), Joseph L. (abt. 1893), Robert A. (abt. 1899), Mary Cecelia (abt. 1900). I suspect there is at least another daughter, probably in the gap between Simon and Joseph, who married a DeCarlo. In particular, I am trying to trace the family of Joseph L. McConnell. He married Esther Viola Watson abt. 1915. Their children included: Adelaide, Henry/Harry, Levinia, Eleanor, Wayne, Gladys (who died as an infant), and Paul. I also know of Dolly and Guy; however, these could be nicknames. Some of the children are still alive, and living in the Altoona area. I am related through Esther Watson, and am looking for any information, and/or to touch base with some of my relatives. Thanks, Debbie Fisher

    2. Accident at Summerhill From yesterday's Johnstown Tribune: A gentleman who came down from Summerhill this morning informs us that there was a serious runaway accident int hat place yesterday afternoon, by which two persons were injured. N. S. George, Esq., had sent his son Harry to the Pennsylvania station with a buggy for the purpose of meeting Mr. George's sister, Mrs. Mary Rorabaugh, on her return from Johnstown on the mail train. The two had just seated themselves in the buggy when the horse took fright and ran away, completely upsetting the vehicle and dragging the occupants a considerable distance. The boy was badly injured externally, but no bones were broken. Mrs. Rorabaugh was hurt internally, the greatest injury being to her right side. The buggy, a new one, was literally smashed to pieces. Besides being one of the best it was valued by Mr. George as a gift from his two oldest sons, who are trainmen on the P. R. R. The sufferers have the sympathy of many friends. ------------------------ WILLIAMSBURG WAIFS Going to wreck-The old wheel house. It is being propped up. Mr. L. G. Brumbaugh is visiting his many friends who are glad to see him but sorry he will not teach for us the coming winter. A near neighbor who has been in Bedford says that by reading the TRIBUNE he was kept posted in all that was going on about home. To the picnic of the prohibition party at Wildwood on the 21st Williamsburg's representation was by rail eighty seven, all armed with first class tickets. It is surprising to see what walnut saw logs are coming in to be shipped away. Some of them from eight to ten feet in length that will dress three feet square. Mr. Ed Stewart, shop clerk of the Pennsylvania railroad company at Conemaugh, is with us helping his brother Dean to pull bass out of the river. John Clark, James Patterson, Samuel Isett, J. M. Spencer and H. R. Campbell, from Williamsburg, are present at the prohibition state convention at Harrisburg to-day. Mr. Lloyd Confer, conductor, has purchased a home in Williamsburg and is now the owner of what was formerly known as the Harris property. He is putting it in good repair. On our sick list we place Dr. Geisinger, who is improving; Mr. Samuel K. Royer, not as well as when we wrote the last letter; Mr. John T. Hare, suffering from a relapse, was quite sick on Sunday morning. Manning & Lewis are putting up a new trestle at their siding, west of Lock mountain water plug, from which they will ship ganister. They are now shipping ganister stone to many points west of Pittsburgh. Mr. George Ake, who left us in the spring, moving to Altoona and accepting a position as brakeman on a shifting engine, has been promoted to extra conductor on supply cars. His first trip was with four cars to Jersey City, Trenton and Philadelphia. George will make a good man for the company in this new position. A new enterprise is springing up with us. It is sowing and cultivating ginseng. It takes about two years for the root to mature but when it does it brings on an average of $2.80 per pound. An advantage about it is that it will grow on ground not tillable. In a warm and damp ravine is where it luxuriates to the best advantage. We most graciously tip our hats to friends and neighbors who have so generously congratulated us on our letters published in the TRIBUNE. The editors of the TRIBUNE do all they can to give the news from every corner of the county, and as a member of the reportorial staff we do all we can to help them. Any item of interest any one gives us will be most kindly received. The person who stole the pocket book from Cal. Johnston has not returned either the pocketbook or the money. Cal., true to his honesty and generosity, out of his own hard earnings, paid the man to whom it belonged, but never mind Cal, your loss has made you many warm friends, among whom the name of Lloyd Confer deserves special mention for the kind manner in which he came down with substantial sympathy. ----------------- Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair

Since the completion of paving on Bell avenue, motorists now have a route which relieves the heavy traffic on Fifth and Sixth avenues. Instead of using Lloyd street to Fifth or Sixth avenue, going into the city, they now use Bell avenue to Seventh street, where the paving ends, and then go down Seventh street and straight across town. This route keeps cars away from all but one of the schools they must pass and the entrance to this school is not on the street. It also keeps motorists away from the more thickly populated parts of the Tenth and Eighth wards. John Hetrick, manager of the Shaffer Kettle street store, has been laid up for a few days with an infected foot. While the infection is painful, no serious results are apprehended. Friendly Bible class held it regular monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Gilbert Jackson on Thursday evening and disposed of considerable business. Preliminary plans were laid for a "Trip Around the World" which the class will conduct at some time in November, the date to be selected later. The "trip," which takes the class from one country to another (the members homes representing the countries) will start at a home to be decided upon later and end at the church, which will represent America. At the conclusion of the business session, there was a pleasant social time, during which dainty refreshments were served to the following members: Mrs. Ross Clifford, Mrs. Victor Jones, Mrs. Gertrude McCollum, Mrs. Lane, Mrs. John Meredith, Miss Mabel Decker and Mrs. Gilbert Jackson and these visitors; Mrs. Babal and daughter Helen, of Lancaster, mother and sister of Mrs. V. J., where they will spend a ten day vacation. Mrs. Mary Riley and her granddaughter, 300 East Walton avenue, have gone to Windber, where they will visit for a week or ten days. Mrs. A. U. Kerns, 206 East First avenue, has returned home from a trip to the west.
