    2. JAMES F. DOVEY FOUND Blairsville's Missing Man Turns Up in Connecticut James F. Dovey, a prosperous business man of Blairsville, mysteriously disappeared from his home several weeks ago, leaving wife and family behind. His disappearance caused the profoundest sensation. There were theories and theories as to the cause of his absence, but the deserted wife was the only one whose idea was right. She was satisfied that her husband's mind had suddenly become unbalanced, when he wandered away. Saturday her theory was fully verified. That day she received a letter from her husband's mother, residing in Meriden, Conn. The letter was dated Friday and says: "Your long lost husband walked into our home today at noon, and you may know my joy. I could scarcely believe it was that it was my first-born. You can easily imagine how he would look after wandering all these weeks. He was travel-stained and footsore and weary-sick and distressed beyond power of words to tell, and his mind was almost an utter blank. I at once put him to bed, and I think with proper care and nursing he will come around all right in a week or so." -------------- KILLED BY WHISKEY Seven-Year-Old Boy Boozes Heavily at a Slavish Christening As a result of a christening held at the home of George Ontko in Spangler Monday of least week, his son, aged 7 years, lies buried in the Catholic cemetery, a victim of strong drink. The spree usually following a christening in a Slavish family, began on Monday morning, and during the day sixteen kegs of beer and six gallons of whiskey were consumed by the boy George and his friends. About 7 o'clock in the evening Dr. Helfrick received a call to the house, as the 7 year-old boy was dying. The information proved correct. The doctor found the lad unconscious from the use of whiskey and in a dying condition. Although every effort was put forth to save the young life, it proved unavailing. He died a couple of hours later. The doctor was informed, in reply to inquiries, that the boy had drank large quantities of whiskey and "him lay quiet since 12 o'clock." When asked whether they gave the boy the whiskey, they replied; "Oh, no! Him just take it himself." Spangler Sentinel. -------------------------- A NARROW ESCAPE Charles Thompson, an axle turner, residing at 2706 West Chestnut avenue, had a narrow escape from being run down by a train on the Hollidaysburg branch railroad, just north of Margaret avenue, last evening. He did not notice the Henrietta accommodation coming behind him on the track he was walking on until the train was within five feet of him. he made a desperate jump and succeeded in clearing the track. The fence at that place is barely fifteen inches from the track and he stood huddled against it until the train got by. One of the large engines would have caught him in this narrow place. ------------------------------- Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair

    1. [PABLAIR-L] Altoona Mirror, 1895
    2. CLAYSBURG This has been the coldest winter in this section for many years, the thermometer registering from 10 to 18 degrees below zero. The ice crop is great. We presume next summer will be cool, as all the ice houses in this section are filled to the brim. The sleighing is very good and well made use of, the roads being full nearly all the time. The people of our town were much excited on Tuesday over the four horse team, which came to our town with a sled load of guests from Frankstown. They put up at the residence of A. C. Smith, where they had a sumptuous dinner. Afterwards they furnished some good vocal and instrumental music. The party consisted of W. Bouslough, Mrs. Bouslough, Sylvester Caldwell, Mrs. Carrie Caldwell, Thos. Caldwell, Oscar Cruise, Ray Weight, Wm. Cartwright, jr., Misses Mollie, Ida and Lillie Cartwright, Mollie Myers, Maggie Johnson, Lib Cruise, May Cartwright, Mrs. Sarah Cartwright and Rollie Cruise. They had a good time and everybody appeared to be well pleased, as everything was sociable and friendly. Such persons are welcome at the residence at any time. The next time let us know sooner and we will have a little more heat for your cold feet. Our fox-hunting club is still in the field but does not meet with much success. Last week they made a good haul, one grey fox was captured, but not until they got it up a tree. They had some trouble to get it, as they did not wish to spoil the hide, filling it with shot. Finally they got it down and scalped the monster and since that they have been looking for the remainder, but have not yet found them. We have as good hunting ground as you find any place, the game being somewhere else. If our sportsmen would only capture the groundhog, so that he would not cause such cold weather, we would be much pleased, but let him go and subscribe for a good family paper, which you can do be subscribing for the Mirror, only 25 cents per month. A double paper every day, with all the latest news from all over the country. --------------------- A POLICE COURT CASE Mrs. Mary Long Sent to a Cell While Her Husband Walks Off With her Prosecutors. Mrs. Mary Long and a Mrs. Collins had a hearing before Mayor Hoyer yesterday afternoon on a charge of disorderly conduct preferred by John Brantner of 1221/2 Ninth avenue. Mr. Brantner testified that Mrs. Long and Mrs. Collins came to his house on Friday afternoon and asked for Mrs. Long's husband. Brantner, who was called home by his wife, said Long wasn't there and to prove it took a young man named Stains into the house to see if he was. On coming out Stains also said Long wasn't there. Mrs. Long called Brantner a liar, with some rough adjectives attached and said her husband was there. A controversy followed to which both Mrs. Long and Mrs. Collins are said by Brantner to have called him more rough names and intimated that his wife kept an assignation house. When the other side of the case was heard, Mrs. Jacob Akers, Mrs. Long's mother, testified that she went to Brantner's with Mrs. Long on Friday morning. Mr. Brantner was not at home, Mrs. Brantner was washing dishes with her pan on the kitchen stove. On the other side of the stove sat Mr. Long, the defendant's husband, with his feet in the oven. Mrs. Akers and his wife asked him to go along home and provide food and coal for the latter, who had been obliged to beg them. Mr. Long refused to go and Mrs. Brantner ordered Mrs. Long and her mother out of the house. They went out, but Mrs. Long went back, took her husband by the collar and led him out. He promised to follow her home but subsequently went back to Brantner's. This led Mrs. Long and her friend, Mrs. Collins, to go after him in the afternoon. The defendant's denied the most profane of the epithets which Mr. Brantner alleged they had uttered, but Mrs. Long admitted that she was angry, had said some rough things and had hit Brantner's door with her fist. Her husband, she alleged, loafed at Brantner's daily, would not work, and failed to give her food or shelter during the cold weather of last week. She alleged she had good reason to believe the money and food she had a right to went to Brantner's. At any rate her husband neglected his work to loaf at Brantner's house, both when Mr. Brantner was there and when he was not. Mrs. Collins when sworn told of the visit of herself and Mrs. Long on Friday afternoon. She said Mrs. Long had talked angrily as a woman was likely to do under the circumstances, but that Mr. Brantner had talked just as loud and angrily. J. Banks Kurtz, attorney for the defendant, submitted that there had been no disturbance to the neighbors by reason of the angry talk of Mrs. Long, and his clients should be discharged as the ordinance expressly says the disturbance which constitutes disorderly must be to the annoyance of the public. The mayor called the two women before him. Mrs. Long was told that she had no right to go to Brantner's and raise a disturbance because her husband made friendly calls there and he would have to treat her like any one else who acted in a disorderly manner. He then imposed a fine of $5 or forty-eight hours imprisonment. Mrs. Collins was discharged with a reprimand. Mrs. Long offered to leave a gold watch as security for her fine, which her mother would promise to furnish her in a few hours. The mayor said he couldn't take the security for a woman. While the trial was yet in progress, warden Downing took Mrs. Long by the arm and against her earnest protest that she would go without being pushed, hustled her down to a cell in the lockup to the infinite enjoyment of the crowd of spectators outside of the railing. The next case, that of Tommy Madden and his chums was then called while Brantner and wife and Mr. Long, with several friends, sauntered down Twelfth street together. -------------------- Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair

    1. [PABLAIR-L] Altoona Mirror, 1895
    2. TYRONE Great guns, didn't she blow yesterday? The winds howled, and snow blew and the cold was intense, knocking the mercury down to eight degrees below the cipher mark, with the Tyrone weather prophet of the Tribune looking out through the roof of his sanctum sauctorium for old Mars, and the more bashful bride, Venice, to see whether there was any escape for us in the near future. He held out no hopes and I, knowing that he is a veritable Hicks and can discount the old weather gauge fifty per cent, only wished that I could retire to the shades of private life on the interest of about one million, where I could keep warm. No doubt there are many more just like me in that respect, but, just like me, they will never have their wishes gratified unless they should happen to strike a gold mine in their back yard. But it was cold and really dangerous for any person to be out in it for very long at a time. A teacher in one of the schools near Grazierville, who always walks every morning from Tyrone to the school, was knocked out yesterday morning and she was afraid to make the journey, but she was picked up by a shifting engine which had business up that way and was landed safely near the spot. She was thankful, but if she had given up the journey there wouldn't have been much lost, as she had few scholars in attendance, and these would have been much better off had they remained at home. Three more cases of measles reported to the health board yesterday. Andrew McCamant has been appointed by the United States Trust company examiner for Blair county. Conductor Isaac Berg walked four miles yesterday to Tyrone to report that his train had stuck and that he needed assistance. His brakeman accompanied him and both suffered considerable from the cold. The mails were all late yesterday. Few women were out on the streets yesterday and those who were compelled to be out needed sympathy and pity. Mrs. M. Willey is going to open a milliner store in the new Berlin block. Parents should not allow their children to attend school on Washington's birthday unless the sessions would be devoted exclusively to the memory of George Washington. Mr. Shirk is the school director who offered the motion not to recognize any school holiday from now until Decoration Day. Surely Decorations Day is not more sacred to the mind of the true American patriot than is the memory of Washington, who made it possible for us to have and enjoy Decoration Day. Shirk is the director who stuck to Pinkerton when the latter's naughty deeds were being shown up. But I am surprised at Stevens, Miller and Lowrie voting for the same. Surely there must be a mistake. --------------- DUNCANSVILLE Rev. A. A. Bunner, of the Church of Christ of Altoona, is holding meetings this week in Yingling's hall. How surprised one is when he reads in the Mirror that the Altoona school board has decided to close the schools for Washington's Birthday. Behind the times gentleman! We are surprised again at a correspondent's remarks when he censures the Tyrone board, in which he charges them with lack of patriotism for deciding not to close their schools on said day. All persons do not seem to be aware of the fact that Washington's birthday is kept by GOOD schools quite differently from what it used to be. Tyrone scribe should migrate to Altoona where he would likely find more congenial company. Rev. Owen James of Hollidaysburg will preach in Hess's hall tomorrow around 2 o'clock. A cordial invitation is extended to all. If we may judge by the appearance of snow on the steps and walk leading to the railroad station, a stranger coming to town might be led to suppose that all the boroughites had joined the Anti-industrial association. ----------------- Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair

    2. Fairview Cemetery The annual meeting of the stockholders of the Altoona Fairview Cemetery Association was held at the Secretary's office Monday evening. The annual report was read which showed that the business affairs of the association have been carefully managed. Further improvements will be made. A new iron fence will be erected across the entire rear end of the grounds during the present year. The following persons were elected officers: President, A. F. Hess; Vice Presidents, H. C. Dern, J. B. Hileman; Treasurer, A. Kipple; Secretary, A. Clabaugh; Trustees, A. H. Maxwell, John Loudon, John M. Campbell, H. L. Nicholson, Jacob Wagner, Sol. Ramey, John W. Smith, J. C. Hughes. ---------------------------- Hunting for a Runaway Boy Ed. O'Brien, of Lilly, was in Greensburg on Monday searching for his only son, Joseph, who ran away from home in 1885. He had been led to believe that a boy going by the name of John Wise, and who had been working for a farmer in the northern part of Westmoreland county was his son, but when he reached the farm he found that the boy had left. Mr. O'Brien says his boy was led away by evil companions. If living he is now only 14 years of age. He is very anxious to reclaim him. The boy's mother has died since he ran away. ------------------------ LOCAL LACONICS Just twenty-two years ago today Lee's surrendered his army to Grant at Appomatix. Coffee drinkers should read the local notice of a grand coffee festival which appears in this issue. Rudisil, the jeweler, has a change of his advertisement this morning, which will be found on the third page. The Young People's Literary Society meets in the Bethel this evening. A good time is expected. Seats are free and all are invited. Dr. Cheney respectfully invites all his former pupils and others wishing to join his Shakespearean class, or to receive private lessons, to be present this evening at 7 o'clock, in the W. C. T. U. room, Otto building. Linton E. Bingman, aged 23, Pennsylvania Railroad brakeman, had a finger of his right hand mashed while making a coupling Thursday morning. He was taken to the Altoona Hospital in the ambulance, and his injuries were attended to there. The four tramps arrested Thursday night for breaking into the Hamilton schoolhouse, between this city and Blair Furnace, were taken before Alderman Rose yesterday. They were all held for Court, and Constable Gracey took them over the hill last evening. Yesterday afternoon a crowd of young hoodlums congregated in front of a cigar store on Seventeenth street and passed the time away by insulting passers-by. The whole gang is known, and if this disgusting practice is not stopped, their names will be handed to the proper authorities. We call attention to the adjourned Orphans' Court sale of a large number of building lots, which takes place at the Opera House this afternoon at 2 o'clock. yesterday it was printed April 29th. The sale will be conducted by A. J. Riley, Esq., trustee. A large number of these lots are situated in the Fifth Ward. ---------------- Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair
