    2. LONG IN SERVICE Baggage Agent J. Harvey Kilgore Rounds Out Fifty Years in Employ of Pennsy. Few men have served the Pennsylvania Railroad company longer and certainly none more faithfully, that J. Harvey Kilgore of 1229 Seventeenth avenue, the well known baggage agent at Altoona, who today rounded out fifty years of continuos service with the company. Mr. Kilgore is spending the golden anniversary of his beginning work at the very same thing he has been doing in all that half century, working, and, when many of his friends came to the baggage room to congratulate him today, he appeared to think that fifty years of service was not anything to be specially taken into consideration and went quietly about his duties, preferring not to say anything about it. James Harvey Kilgore was born in Juniata county, near Port Royal, on Sept. 9, 1844, and, on May 1, 1863, entered the employ of the Pennsy as a water boy at Port Royal, carrying water to the workmen on the tracks. However, he soon became a regular trackhand and worked at that hard labor on the tracks about Port Royal until May 8, 1866, when he was transferred to the warehouseman at the Port Royal warehouse. On July 29, 1868, Mr. Kilgore became a passenger brakeman on the Middle division, and on Oct. 29, 1872, when he was promoted to baggage agent at Altoona, a positions he has held continuously since. In spite of his long service Mr. Kilgore found himself in excellent health on the anniversary, and expects to hold his place actively until next September, when he will reach retiring age. ---------------- RECENT WEDDINGS Torrens-Weidel On Friday evening at 8 o'clock, at the parsonage of the Second Lutheran church, the Rev. 1. [PABLAIR-L] bonebreak obit - thanks
    2. Thanks for all the responses. I have received a scan of the obit - so call off any other efforts! Now that I've found this list I will probably lurk in the background - the Bonebreak family is pretty well researched so I don't do much work on it. Uncle Glenn (the subject of the obit) was the last of my grandfather's brothers. If anyone is researching the Bonebreak family - I'll be glad to give any help I can - may not be much, but maybe a nudge in the right direction. Cheryl M. Gray Orlando, FL

He had been led to believe that a boy going by the name of John Wise, and who had been working for a farmer in the northern part of Westmoreland county was his son, but when he reached the farm he found that the boy had left. Mr. O'Brien says his boy was led away by evil companions. If living he is now only 14 years of age. He is very anxious to reclaim him. The boy's mother has died since he ran away. ------------------------ LOCAL LACONICS Just twenty-two years ago today Lee's surrendered his army to Grant at Appomatix. 2. JAMES F. DOVEY FOUND Blairsville's Missing Man Turns Up in Connecticut James F. Dovey, a prosperous business man of Blairsville, mysteriously disappeared from his home several weeks ago, leaving wife and family behind. His disappearance caused the profoundest sensation. There were theories and theories as to the cause of his absence, but the deserted wife was the only one whose idea was right. She was satisfied that her husband's man had suddenly become unbalanced, when he wandered away. Saturday her theory was fully verified. That day she received a letter from her husband's mother, residing in Meriden, Conn. The letter was dated Friday and says: "Your long lost husband walked into our home today at noon, and you may know my joy. I could scarcely believe it was that it was my first-born. You can easily imagine how he would look after wandering all these weeks. He was travel-stained and footsore and weary-sick and distressed beyond power of words to tell, and his mind was almost an utter blank. i at once put him to bed, and I think with proper care and nursing he will come around all right in a week or so." -------------- KILLED BY WHISKEY Seven-Year-Old Boy Boozes Heavily at a Slavish Christening/ As a result of a christening held at the home of George Ontko in Spangler Monday of least week, his son, aged 7 years, likes buried in the Catholic cemetery, a victim of strong drink. The spree usually following a christening in a Slavish family, began on Monday morning, and during the day sixteen kegs of beer and six gallons of whiskey were consumed by the boy George and his friends. About 7 o'clock in the evening Dr. Helfrick received a call to the house, as the 7 year-old boy was dying. The information proved correct. The doctor found the lad unconscious from the use of whiskey and in a dying condition. Although every effort was put forth to save the young life, it proved unavailing. He died a couple of hours later. The doctor was informed, in reply to inquiries, that the boy had drank large quantities of whiskey and "him lay quiet since 12 o'clock." When asked whether they gave the boy the whiskey, they replied; "Oh, no! Him just take it himself." Spangler Sentinel. -------------------------- A NARROW ESCAPE Charles Thompson, an axle turner, residing at 2706 West Chestnut avenue, had a narrow escape from being run down by a train on the Hollidaysburg branch railroad, just north of Margaret avenue, last evening. He did not notice the Henrietta accommodation coming behind him on the track he was walking on until the train was within five feet of him. he made a desperate jump and succeeded in clearing the track. The fence at that place is barely fifteen inches from the track and he stood huddled against it until the train got by. One of the large engines would have caught him in this narrow place. ------------------------------- Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair

Sarah Marie, infant daughter of John and Mary Garrity, died Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, aged 1 year. We regret to learn that Mr. A. J. Jamison, one of Lycoming county's good and substantial farmers, is seriously ill. Little hopes of his recovery are entertained. Elsewhere in this issue appears the announcement of W. A. Ambrose, esq., of this city, as a candidate for district attorney, subject to republican rules. Mr. Ambrose is a first-class citizen and a good lawyer, and would make an excellent district attorney. The annual convention of the Sate Miners' association will be held in this city on the 15th of July. The most important business to be transacted will be the election of officers for the ensuing year. Delegates from all portions of the estate are expected to be present. Mr. Simon Potter, of this city, has been appointed by the postoffice department an extra letter carrier under Postmaster Patton. One of the regular carriers being off duty, Mr. Potter has been for the past few days been hard at work. In the United States court at Pittsburgh yesterday an argument on exceptions to assignee's report of a sale of lands belonging to William M. Lloyd, in Letcher county, Ky., was held. Charles Smith, aged 57, a native of Ireland but for years a resident of this country, died on Wednesday night, at the home of Daniel Noonan, Seventeenth street, between Thirteenth and Fourteenth avenues. The deceased was a laborer by occupation. Lizzie, daughter of George and Lavina Lynch died at the residence of William Berkheimer, Ninth avenue between Ninth and Tenth streets, about 4 o'clock Sunday morning, aged 9 months and 3 days. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment in Oak Ridge cemetery. Under the head of announcements this morning will be found that of Coroner W. H. Glenn, of this city, who is a candidate for renomination. Mr. Glenn has made an efficient official and should be selected by the convention, as its candidate for the office coroner will be selected by a good round majority. The funeral of Charles J. Stahl took place Sunday afternoon from his late residence No. 11091/2 Eleventh avenue. Many of the members of the Froshinn society were in attendance. The interment was in Fairview cemetery. 2. A Narrow Escape Mr. A. B. Amich, the plumber, whose place of business is on Seventh avenue near Thirteenth street, met with an accident on Tuesday which might have been far more serious than it was. He was doing some plumbing on the first floor of Mr. Tom. Parsons' new building, Eighth avenue near Thirteenth street, when a hatchet which was on the third floor of the building, was jolted from the joist and fell to where Mr. Amich was working. In it descent it struck him on the hat, the blade cutting through it and also through several pieces of heavy paper he had inside the hat and as a result he received a painful scalp wound. A physician was summoned and dressed the hurt. Fortunately the injury was not serious but his escape was a narrow one. ---------------- Fell Out of a Car Ex-Treasurer Alexander Rutledge, an old and much respected citizen of Williamsburg, met with a painful accident at Schmucker & Co.'s stone quarry, above Franklin Forge on Wednesday afternoon of last week. He was sitting in the luggage car of the Williamsburg branch train when, by some accident, he lost his balance, falling to the ground, cutting his head and receiving other painful injuries. Had the car been in motion, he would undoubtedly have been killed. As it was, his injuries were not serious, and we soon to hear of his complete recovery. --------------- A Serious Accident Wednesday a report reached this city that Mr. Silas Geesey, of Frankstown, had been killed by an explosion of dynamite at Funk's stone quarry, at that place. His brothers and other friends here were much alarmed and some of them went over to Frankstown, where they were relieved to find that the report had been exaggerated, though it was true enough that Mr. Geesey had been badly hurt. It appears that between 9 and 10 o'clock Wednesday morning he and a fellow workman went to remove a dynamite cartridge from the quarry, intending to substitute a heavier one. By some means an explosion occurred, blowing out Mr. Geesey's left eye, and terribly lacerating his face and both arms. Dr. D. S. Hays, of Hollidaysburg, was summoned, and after removing some pieces of stone from his wounds and dressing them, expressed the belief that he would recover. Mr. Geesey's numerous friends here sympathize with him in the misfortune that has befallen him and will be glad to hear of his speedy and complete recovery. He is 38 years of age, and has a wife and five children. ------------------- A short time ago two Spruce Creek girls visited this city for the purpose of having their pictures taken. Not knowing where the galleries are located and their bashfulness at first restraining them from making the needed inquiry of persons whom they met, they concluded to pass along on opposite sides of the street and by examining the various signs discover what they wanted without assistance. While going up Eleventh avenue intent in their search, one of the young ladies noticed a very amiable looking young gentleman standing in front of a clothing store and plucking up courage she asked him if he would kindly direct her to a photograph gallery. The elegant young man made no reply and the shrieks of a number of small boys who had heard the question causing her to look more sharply, she discovered that she had mistaken a clothier's "dummy" for veritable flesh and blood. The girls fled. ----------------------- Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair
