Listers: Would like some imput from anyone who can help with the following: 1.) Searching for date/place of marriage of Patrick KELLY and Mary Ann DOLAN; ca. 1850, Centre, Blair, or other central PA counties. Religion -- Roman Catholic. 2.) Looking for dates of birth/baptism for this couples' two children -- Patrick/Patsy, b. abt. 1851-52, PA, county unknown; and Mary Anna, b. abt. 1854, PA, county unknown. 3.) Searching for date/place of death and burial for my 2nd greatgrandfather, Patrick KELLY, b. 1818, Co. Galway, Ireland>America/New York, 1841; Decl. of Int., Aug 1844, and naturalized, Aug 1845, Centre Co., PA. 4.) Trying to locate date/place of marriage for Mary Ann nee DOLAN KELLY's second marriage to Richard HALL. Religion -- Catholic. NOTE: I have determined that their first born child, Richard V. HALL was baptized Aug 1857, St. Matthew's Cath. Ch., Tyrone Twp., Blair Co., PA. So, sometime between Mary Ann DOLAN and Patrick KELLY's second born child, Mary Anna KELLY, (abt. 1854), and the birth of Mary Ann nee DOLAN KELLY HALL's first born child to Richard HALL, 1857, her first husband, Patrick KELLY died. Problem is when, where?? And when, where did she marry the second time to Richard HALL. Should I search other counties adjacent to Blair and Centre? Any help, suggestions, or comments will be most appreciated. Marybeth Corrigall ACMBJCA@aol.com

An Eggs-traordinary Egg Story A lady residing in the First ward, who is the owner of six fine pullets and one that ain't a pullet, no more and no less, was surprised yesterday morning on going to the coop to find nine fully developed and perfectly shelled eggs, four of them in two nests and one in each of the other four nests. The question now is, where did the three extra eggs come from? The coop is inaccessible to other chickens and roosters, you know, don't take any laying in theirs. This is certainly an eggs-traordinary eggs-ploit, and if anybody can eggs plain it now is the time to egg-stend our fund of information on the subject. ---------------------- Wedding Bells Kepler-Snyder At Boalsburg, on Sunday, June 15, 1884, by Rev. Creamer, W. K. Kepler of Altoona, Pa., and Annie B. Snyder, of Snow Shoe intersection. Mr. Kepler is a very fine young man and has recently been associated with Mr. Garman of this place in the purchase and sale of Canadian horses. The lady to whom he is wedded is held in high esteem and will make Mr. K. an excellent wife. We wish them much joy. The happy couple are now in this place. Bellefonte News. ------------------------------------- Tyrone Topics John Igo, mail messenger of the B. E. V. R. R., left yesterday morning on the Pacific Express for Kentucky, on a short visit. Mr. Bulzer, wife and child, from Houtzdale, went to Loretto yesterday morning to visit a young son who is going to school at that place. Mr. Thomas A. Scott and family have returned home from a visit to their eastern friends, after an absence of nearly three weeks. He will resume his duties as night dispatcher in a few days. The following officers have been elected by the Y. M. C. A: President, H. M. Myers; Vice President, David Burket; Recording Secretary, Edward Stein; Corresponding Secretary, Luther Waring; Treasurer, J. S. Waite. A new street lamp has been erected at the northwest corner of Allegheny and Lincoln avenue. This has been long needed for there is a great many things being done on and about that corner that needs some light thrown on it. ------------------------------- Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus
MARRIAGE UNION LASTS MANY YEARS Mr. and Mrs. Henry Shuman of Morrison's Cove Celebrate 57th Anniversary Yesterday. ELEVEN VISITS FROM STORK Trips Outside of County Confined to Business Visits to Woodbury Shoemaker and Weaver In these days of divorces, the much talked of trial marriages and other evidences of unrest and disturbances in the marital relations, it is refreshing to hear of a marriage that has extended through a period covering almost two generations. Fifty-seven years ago yesterday, an aged couple of Morrison's Cove, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Shuman, were united in marriage, the union, happy to the selves and their children, embraced a longer period than that rounded out by few, if any, other couples in this section of the state. A month or more ago plans were laid for the celebration of the unusual anniversary at the home of the aged couple near Curryville, along the Henrietta branch of the railroad, in the extreme southern end of the county, in conjunction with the observance of the thirtieth wedding anniversary of their daughter, Elizabeth, and husband, William Ake, of Martinsburg, who were married on a date a few days previous. Hardly had the plans been laid for the joint observance when Mr. Shuman became the victim of a paralytic stroke which weakened him both physically and mentally. However, the couple yesterday was surrounded by their children and other relatives who live in the immediate vicinity, and the day proved a happy one for all. Began Married Life in Wilderness Henry Shuman and Miss Louisa Smaltz were married at Martinsburg, January 18, 1852, by the Rev. Joseph Fichtner, pastor of the Lutheran churches at Martinsburg, Roaring Spring and Newry, and one of the pioneer ministers of this section of the state. Using the proverbial phrase, they started life together with scarcely more than the clothing on their backs, and taking up housekeeping in what then was a wilderness in the southern end of the county, have come down to life's close after having spent more than the average lifetime in wedded union. Eleven children were born to the couple, two having died. The survivors are Mrs. Mary Kauffman of Martinsburg, and Mrs. Sarah Puderbaugh of Iowa, twin sisters; John Shuman and Mrs. Katharine Diehl of Loysburg; Mrs. Lydia Watshaw of Woodbury, Bedford county; Albert of Everett and Ephraim and Frank, near Curryville. Some twenty grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren also bring happiness to the old age hours of the couple. Pioneer Settlers of the Cove Mr. Shuman was born with a short distance of where he now lives, March 14, 1827, his parents having been among the first settlers of the Cove. They came to this section of the state from Adams county and were of German extraction. With the exception of having made business trips to Woodbury, across the Bedford county line, Mr. Shuman was never out of Blair county during his long life. He followed the occupation of shoemaking and weaving up until a few years ago, his shop being the headquarters for all political and neighborhood information for many years. His was the only establishment of the kind in that section for several decades and he realized a profitable trade previous to the years when the farmers of the communities began purchasing their footwear and carpets at the stores. Mrs. Shuman was born in the state of Wurtemberg, Germany, August 28, 1832. With her parents, she came to America when seven years of age and has lived in Morrison's Cove almost her entire life. Besides bringing up a large family of children she has fairly been a foster-mother to the surrounding community, her charitable deeds and words of encouragement in times of sickness and bereavement being known in almost every home in the neighborhood for many miles around. Aside from the struggle entailed in making both ends meet during the period in which the large family was reared, the couple have laid aside a modest, but comfortable competency which they are now enjoying while waiting for the end of life's evening. ------------------------------- MAIL BOXES FROZEN UP During the past few mornings of zero weather the city mailmen have had considerable trouble in collecting mail from the boxes found in different parts of the city as the locks of the boxes would not open, owing to the cold. The frost causes the mechanism of the locks to freeze, defying the operations of the key. Sometimes the application of a burning match or two would drive the frost from the locks but this morning several of the postmen hit upon the idea of carrying candles with them as the thawing out process could be done with much more dispatch. -------------------- Italian Trackhand Hurt At 1:15 this afternoon, while shifting engine No. 1740 was coming down through the yards, it struck Mike Sinderelle of Fifth street between Eighth and Ninth avenues, a track hand who was engaged in ramming ties, and threw him to one side. He was placed upon a stretcher and carried to the depot when the ambulance was summoned he was removed to the hospital. His injuries consist of contusions of the back. -------------- Johnstowners in Altoona Mrs. R. R. Thomas of Vine street and Mr. and Mrs. John W. Jones and Lewis H. Johns of Lincoln street, were among the Johnstowners in Altoona last evening to hear the Mountain Ash male choir, when it came through Monday afternoon from the west. I was wondering if there was anyone living in the area who would be able to do some court research on a very narrow period of time (1847-1861). I would, of course, be willing to pay for your time! I had hoped to be able to get out to do the court research myself but have not been able to make the trip. I have an ancestor who was a RR worker and was killed at Horseshoe Curve in 1861. I'd like to have copies of any orphans court documents and wills/inventories for him. I have dates and other pertinent information, so it shouldn't require too much digging. If anyone is able to do this research - or knows of someone who can, please let me know and I'll send you the details. ANOTHER WEDDING Marriage of Mr. James H. Baer, of Philadelphia, and Miss Lilah Work, of Altoona. The merry month of June is a favorite one among those who have their minds matrimonially inclined, it being chosen by many as the one in which their marriage shall take place. In June the roses are in bloom and all this old world of ours puts on the mantle of verdure, and nature in consequence seems in an indulgent and lovely mood. When thought it may occasionally rain on a wedding day, the idea, at one time prevalent that it was unlucky for a marriage to occur on a rainy day, has been dissipated, and very properly, too, by the advancement of knowledge in the nineteenth century. Wednesday evening at 7 o'clock, in this city, another worthy young couple were joined in the bonds of holy wedlock in the presence of a number of their friends. We refer to the pleasant social event which occurred at the hour stated at the residence of Mr. L. P. Work, No. 1314 Eleventh avenue, it being the marriage of his youngest daughter, Miss Lilah, to Mr. James H. Baer, formerly of this city, but now of Philadelphia. Rev. J. B. Shaver, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church, officiated, and there were present to witness the ceremony the following ladies and gentlemen: Mr. and Mrs. J. Fred Snyder, Mrs. J. B. shaver, Mrs. J. B. Hileman, Misses Clara Taylor, Lizzie Baier, Maria Shoemaker, Sallie Shank, Jennie Smith, Hattie Delo, Jennie Osborne, Messers. John Loudon, John A. Baer, John A. Smith, Theo. Burchfield, G. A. Baer, Clayton Houck, Altoona; Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Coulter and Miss Rea Hart, Johnstown, Mrs. M. W. Isenberg, Shirleysburg, Huntingdon county, and Messrs. Thomas. Bell and Charles Marlow, of Philadelphia. The newly wed couple were the recipients of a large number of most beautiful as well as useful presents from their friends. the marriage ceremony concluded, Mr. and Mrs. Baer were warmly congratulated and many were the wishes expressed for their future happiness. An elegant collation was served during the evening and a few minutes after 9 o'clock the newly married couple were driven to the station where they embarked on Philadelphia express eastward bound. For their wedding tour they will visit Cape May and other pointes of interests on the Atlantic coast. They will make Philadelphia their future home. The bride is a most estimable young lady and one who is very highly thought of by all who have the pleasure of her acquaintance. The groom is a son of Mr. John A. Baer of this city. He at one time was night agent at the Pennsylvania ticket office in this city, but for several years past has held a position in the claims department of the general freight office of the same road in Philadelphia. He is a general favorite among his acquaintances and an excellent young man. The Tribune hopes their married life may be a very pleasant one. ----------------------------------- THROWN FROM A WAGON What might have been a very serious accident occurred Wednesday morning at the Ninth street crossing. Messrs. Harry Nixdorf and George Streit, were driving to the east side of the city and were in the ice cream delivery wagon of Mr. Nixdorf. They were behind several other teams all waiting for a signal to go ahead and when this was given by the watchman the procession began. When partially over the horse, attached to the wagon in which were seated the two gentlemen named above, became frightened at the rattling of the vehicles ahead of it and becoming restless started off rather rapidly. Mr. Streit was driving and in turning out of the way of another vehicle he was throw to the ground by the foot board coming loose. Mr. Nixdorf was also throw out but sustained no injuries. Mr. Streit was not so fortunate. In falling the lines became entangled about his legs and he was dragged some twenty-five feet before he could extricate himself. His left thumb was broken and he received a number of painful bruises. The horse went up on Ninth street to Fifth avenue where he was stopped. The wagon was not damaged to any great extent nor was the horse. The animal is usually very quiet and it required something more than ordinary to frighten him. Mr. Streit's injuries were attended by a physician. ------------------- FRANKSTOWN FINDINGS When Michael Geesey was unloading some material for his house on of the horses in the wagon became frightened, and kicking, striking Mr. Geesey on the arm and broke it. John C. Robison is getting ready to move his new saw mill from his farm in Scotch Valley to the Flowing Spring, where he intends cutting the timber that is now growing on Lock mountain. I am looking for any information on the Reverend F.M. Lauffer who was the pastor of Zion German Evangelical Lutheran Church that was located in Tyrone in 1881. The council consisted of Leonard Amon, Henry Woolff, Henry Burket, David Bowers, John Amon and Adam Wolfgang. He married Mr. Alex Recke of Johnstown and Miss Katie Rinehart on May 12, 1882. His wife was Maggie who died at age 27 in 1883 and they had one son, aged 8 at time of her death. Thanks in advance. Treese Reunion Is Happy Event During a day of sunshine on Saturday, in the Wildwood park at Clappertown, with its pearling streams of fresh spring water, beneath the foliage of great sycamores and willows and on nature's green carpet, the Treese and kindred families had a day of festivity as had been planned for last year and so well arranged for the social event. Folks from Clappertown, Royer, Williamsburg, Hollidaysburg, Altoona and elsewhere in the number of several hundred gathered during the early part of the day. The young men played ball during the forenoon and afternoon. The older ones had social chats and the good mothers prepared for the dinner. At the noon hour the families and their guests gathered at the tables, several hundred feet in length and partook of the many good things of the season. The Treese family is one of the oldest in the cove. Their ancestors came here from lands beyond the sea during the early part of the nineteenth century. Being industrious and frugal in habits, the families grew in number and have taken an important part in the industries. They worked at the iron ore furnaces, in the mines, tilled the farms, managed the quarries and a number of them have responsible positions with the railroad companies. Like many other people during the days of the Civil war, the fathers and sons went to the field of strife and the mothers worked and wept at home. They have taken an active part in civic affairs and belonging to various denominations have an important part in the Christian church. An interesting business meeting was held at the close of the celebration. Edward Treese of Hollidaysburg presided as chairman and J. B. Treese of Hollidaysburg officiated as secretary. It was decided to hold this annual outing of the Treese family every year. The following officers were elected to serve for the ensuing year: President Calvin Rhodes, vice president and treasurer, M. E. Treese; secretary, J. R. Treese. President Calvin Rhodes then appointed special committees on representation in Duncansville, Hollidaysburg, Williamsburg and Roaring Spring. ------------------------------ Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair

The volunteer response for the obit index project was amazing, we have enough volunteers to do three years of indexes. Steve has already started putting them on the Blair page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair/obit_index.html Actually, Steve did better than I did, I have to send out the 1953 indexes to the volunteers yet!! We have been entertaining visiting grandchildren, and will continue to do so for the next 17 days!! Right now we have our two grandchildren from WV for their annual two week visit. I just want you to know that I have learned new slang, and there is an entire world of hair products, shoes, and rappers out there that I know nothing about. Did you know that those female singers with long blonde hair, and lots of eye makeup are not the same person? Indeed not, they just look and sound alike!! I will try to get those out early next week. If you have volunteered and have not received your files, they will be in the mail soon!! It has also come to my attention that I have repeated the same newspaper transcriptions to the list. I apologize for that, but I must say, I repeat myself in person too, so that may explain it!! Thank you all again, and especially to Steve, who is 'freakin awesome', he is working very hard to get these indexes on-line before he leaves for a few weeks next Wed. I am trying to find information on the children of Jacob and Rachel Shenafelt of Williamsburg, Blair County. I believe both Jacob and Rachel were born abut 1806 - I don't have a maiden name for Rachel. Someone sent me a picture of a tombstone in a cemetery in Williamsburg (he described it as a little cemetery across from Zion's Lutheran Cemetery - is it Zion's Lutheran, too?) that shows "William Shenefelt son of Jacob and Rachel" but the dates are unreadable on the picture. There is also a tombstone for Nancy Shenefelt that looks like it says "wife of William" - I can't make out the dates on it, either. I would be grateful for help on this line. Thanks- Linda Hansen
