    1. [PABLAIR-L] Altoona Tribune, 1880 (August)
    2. MARRIED CORNELIUS-HUMMEL--In Logantown, Tuesday evening, July 27, at the residence of the bride's father, by Rev. Thomas Sherlock, Thomas L. Cornelius and Miss Alice M. Hummel, all of Altoona. ------------------- DIED ANDERSON--In this city, July 28, John Anderson, in the 60th year of his age. HUFF--In Logan township, Dry Gap road, Eliza J. Huff, widow of Dr. Frederick C. Huff, aged about 78 years. GARBER--July 28, near Roaring Spring, Susan, daughter of Joseph and Catharine Garber, aged 10 years, 11 months and 20 days. "Dearest daughter, thou hast left us, Here thy loss we deeply feel. But 'tis God that has bereft us He can all our sorrows heal" ---------------- Killing Bumble Bee With a Hatchet The Tyrone Times says that Edward McKinney, son of John, was the victim of quite a singular accident on Wednesday of this week. A "bumble bee" lit on his forehead, and holding a hatchet in his hand at the time he undertook to use it as a fly brush. He missed the object of his pursuit, but the hatchet struck the boy's head, severing a branch of the temporal artery. The blood flowed freely for a while. Ed says a hatchet is not a good weapon to kill a bumble bee with, especially when occupying a seat so near an artery. -------------------------- CITY AND COUNTRY Five printers are drawn to serve as jurors at the October term. Senator Conrad raised the first building on Tyrone's burnt district. The public schools of Altoona will open on Monday, September 6th. The number of burial permits issued for Fairview cemetery in June was 17, and in July, 25. A catfish 21 1/2 inches in length was caught by a Lewistown party at Vineyard Camp, Mifflin county. There was a stiff frost at Cresson Thursday morning. The depot platform was white with it. Peter Swoope, Esq., one of Huntingdon's old landmarks, died on Tuesday night, aged about 85 years. The Pennsylvania railroad depot building at Tyrone will be a handsome structure when completed. Our colored fellow-citizen, William Nesbit, Esq., has been made a member of the Republican State Committee. Mrs. Betsey Greenland, wife of ex-Sheriff Greenland, of Huntingdon county, died on Friday night, aged about 69 years. The boom at Williamsport has less logs in it this season than it has contained at the same time for many years previous. J. V. Isenberg, killed fifty-nine vipers on Saturday last, while plowing in a field in Porter township, Huntingdon county. Mrs. Joshua Houpe, of Mount Union, was bitten on the ankle by a copperhead snake, recently, and is in a critical condition. Will some one of our lady readers inform a subscriber as to the best method of preparing yeast and baking bran or Graham bread? Robert Vanormer, of McVeytown, Thursday ran a pick through his foot while working in an ore mine. The injury was severe. J. H. Brown has been appointed Register and Recorder of Cambria county, by Governor Hoyt, in place of J. G. Lake, deceased. Uncle Davy Crawford, of Sinking Valley, has a three legged chicken. The bird is two months old. The deformity was only recently noted. Johnstown has what Altoona has not--an excellent market. For a city of its size and under, Altoona has the poorest market in this broad land. Grain cars of the Pennsylvania railroad, of their new pattern, which have a capacity to carry 40,000 pounds, are being shipped west in large numbers. Jacob Burket, father of Dr. G. W. Burket, of Tyrone, was buried at Brookville last Wednesday. His age was 91 years, 11 months and 20 days. The Teachers' Institute for the Altoona school district will be held in the First ward school house, commencing on Tuesday, August 31st, and continuing for four days. A Blair county official whose business calls him to every part of the county says he finds the TRIBUNE in almost every house. Advertisers will please note this fact. The house of John McCormick, Summerhill township, Cambria county, was burglarized last Thursday night of $20 in money, a silver watch and a set of silver teaspoons. -------------------- Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair

Interment in St. John's Cemetery. ----------------- IN MEMORIAM In sad but loving remembrance of James M. Haulman who departed this life three years ago today: Down in the lonely cemetery, In the cold, cold clay, It is there we laid a loved one Three years ago today. Oft we wander to the cemetery. Flowers to strew with tender care Over the grave of a loved one Who is silently resting there. Oft I look over yonder To see his face; it is in vain. Oh! how sad it is to think We will never meet on earth again. A. R. HAULMAN, WIFE AND CHILDREN. IN MEMORIAM In sad but loving remembrance of our dear father, Samuel J. Young, who departed this life two years ago today. Gone but not forgotten. HIS SONS AND DAUGHTERS IN MEMORIAM In sad but loving remembrance of our dear son and brother, E. MR. AND MRS. EDGAR THOMAS ---------------------------------------- LOSES RIGHT EYE S. D. Detwiler, aged 40, of 115 Willow avenue, a car builder for the Pennsy employed in the steel car plant at Lloyd street, is blind in his right eye as the result of being struck in the optic with a rivet while at work at 11 o'clock this morning. Mr. Detwiler, with several fellow workmen, was busy driving rivets in a piece of steel when a piece of the rivet struck him fully in the eye badly lacerating the ball. He was taken to the office of Dr. S. P. Glover, the Pennsy eye physician. He wanted the eyeball removed but after an examination Dr. Glover decided that the man had better consult a specialist. Accordingly he was placed on a train and taken to Philadelphia where he will be admitted to the Wills Eye hospital. While everything will be done to save the eyeball it is more than unlikely that Mr. Detwiler will ever again be able to see out of the optic. ----------------------- Marriage License Record Charles David Whitman of Altoona and Florence Brettress Thurshy of St. Paul, Minn. 2. Martinsburg Matters Carrie Ruth, an infant daughter of S. B. Isenberg, Esq., of Springfield Mines, was buried at Clover Creek, Lutheran Church, on Monday last, by Rev. F. A. Rupley, officiating. Miss Ida Stoner, daughter of C. P. Stoner, Esq., met with a painful accident on Thursday last, by which her arm was severely burned. Miss Ida was, with other members of the family, carrying some hot applebutter down stairs, when she tripped and fell, spilling the contents of a crock on her arm, with the result above stated. Daniel Bollinger, Esq., of the firm of H. L. Bollinger & Co., met with an accident on Tuesday afternoon by which his ankle was severely sprained. He was waiting on a customer, who inquired for a class of goods which are kept on the highest shelf in the store. To get them down, Mr. Bollinger climbed to the top of a high stool, one leg of which slipped into a hole while he was on it, precipitating him to the floor with the above stated result. ------------------------- NEARLY COMPLETED The Lewisburg and Tyrone railroad will be completed to Pennsylvania Furnace in a few days, and then taken out of the contractors hands. It will, however, take several weeks yet in trimming up before the road is finally open to traffic. As the work is so nearly completed, it is but just to say that the contractors, Messrs. Vandyke and Wilson, have proved themselves gentlemen, and in dealing with the many men to whom they have given work, they have acted as square and honest men. ------------------- BOGUS CHECK MAN ARRESTED One evening last week a young fellow hailing from Sunbury, was arrested at the Ward House, at the instance of S. R. Notestine, who keeps a hotel at Curwensville, on the charge of fraud. He had been boarding with Notestine and gave his check on a Sunbury bank in payment therefor. The check came back marked: "No funds." After going to Curwensville, he fixed the matter up in some way to their satisfaction and was released from custody. He passed through here again the following evening "chuck full." ------------------ A TIGHT SQUEEZE Mr. John Lowe made a remarkably narrow escape on Saturday. He was visiting furnace No. 1, and attempted to pass through the narrow space, near the car that ascends perpendicularly to the tunnel head of the furnace. While in the narrow passage the signal was given and the car began to ascend. The attendant pulled him from his dangerous position, but not in time to save him from getting a very tight squeeze and receiving a painful bruise on the hip. -------------------------- H. Z. Replogle, a butcher of New Enterprise, while driving cattle to market saw a paper pinned to a tie. He carelessly pulled it off and put it in his pocket. After getting home he examined the paper and was astonished to read thus: "You will find my body thirty feet from the tree, covered with leaves. I have five hundred dollars in my pockets and a good watch, which you can have if you burn my body. I do not want it buried." Mr. Replogle and some of his friends went in search, but failed to find the body or any clue of it. ------------------ Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair

    1. [PABLAIR-L] 1900 Altoona address directory
    2. J Ebaugh
    3. Hi Listers, Does anyone have access to an Altoona city directory for 1900? I am looking for Patrick Halton. I know where he was in 1890 and in 1910, but he is at neither address in 1900, although probably in the same general neighborhood. Thanks for any help, which will be most appreciated.
