Schroeder, a brakeman, aged 38, who resides at 115 Walnut avenue, rear, was the first to suffer an amputation of his right leg, which was badly crushed this morning at 3:43 o'clock when he fell under his train at East Altoona. Yard engine No. 291 was shifting a draft of five cars on the ladder track at GD office and was about to open the knuckle on one of the couplings when he was thrown underneath the wheels. Only one truck ran over his right leg. He was rushed to the Altoona hospital, where he was found that it would be necessary to remove the lower portion of the limb. His leg was amputated just below the knee, the operation being performed at 4:20 o'clock. John Herzog, injured in an accident on the railroad last fall, and who has been confined to the hospital for the past several months, submitted to the amputation of his left leg just below the knee at 11 o'clock this morning. --------------------------- FOOT CAUGHT BY TABLES Pennsy Workmen Treated at Altoona Hospital for Minor Injuries. William F. Berndt, aged 41, a machine hand, residing at 400 Beech avenue, was treated at the dispensary this forenoon for a fracture of the right ankle, sustained when his foot was caught between two machine tables in the steel car shops. Raphael Csokan, aged 26, of 321 Howard avenue, a laborer, employed by the Pennsy, sustained a laceration of the ring finger of the left hand this morning when he was struck by a falling cinder. George Pokorany, aged 29, of 210 Walnut avenue, sustained a fracture of the index finger of the left hand when he was struck by a piece of copper. Spiros Bookes, aged 36, of 1207 Seventeen and a Half streets, suffered a fracture of the seventh rib of the left side when he fell in an ash pit while working for the Pennsy this morning. Dominick Cickano, aged 30, of 322 Seventh avenue, had his head badly lacerated this morning when he was accidentally struck with a sledge hammer. He was employed in the car shops. ------------------- NEWS OF LOCAL EVENTS E. C. Wicker of 1427 Twelfth avenue, who was operated on for his ear at the Mercy hospital, Pittsburgh, is getting along nicely. Mrs. S. J. Duganne, mother of Prof. J. M. Duganne, returned to her home last evening after eight weeks at the Mercy hospital, completely cured of a stroke of paralysis. Dr. E. H. Morrow was the attending physician. ------------------------ PRISONER HAD ONE CENT Fred Lafferty, arrested for drunkenness, at 10:40 his morning, by Officer Miller, on Eleventh avenue, between Thirteenth and Fourth streets, would have been unable to get another drink, even had he not fallen into the hands of the police. 2. MARRIED At the United Brethren Parsonage, on the 21st inst., by Rev. T. F. Hallowell, Mr. ALLEN MAHLIN to Miss MARTHA SAPP, both of Altoona. In Junction City, Kansas, on the 20th ult., by Rev. Wm. Todd, GEORGE W. MARTIN, editor of the "Union" and formerly of Hollidaysburg, to Miss LYDIA COULSON, of St. George, Pattawattomie county, Kansas. --------------------------------------- ADMINISTRATOR'S NOTICE Notice is hereby given that Letters of Administration have been granted to the undersigned on the estate of Samuel McGlathery, late of Logan township, Blair County, dec'd. All persons indebted to said estate are requested to make immediate payment, and those having claims will present the same duly authenticated for settlement, without delay. ANDREW BIDDLE, Administrator Altoona, Jan. 20, 1864. ---------------------- SUDDEN DEATH.--On Satruday last, while a number of boys were coasting down one of the streets in West Ward, Tommy Hilliard, son of Joseph Hilliard, ran his sled off the track against the steps in front of a house, on the sidewalk, injuring himself so much, internally, that he died at noon on Sunday. He was a fine, promising little boy, a favorite of all who knew him. Other boys were hurt on the same day, in consequence of their 'cutters' flying the track. We like to see boys enjoy themselves, and oft have we wished we "were a boy again," that we might repeat our pleasures, but we think they should select coasting ground less dangerous than that upon which little Tommy received his injuries. ----------------------- FROZEN TO DEATH.-- On Wednesday night last, Hugh McMullen, a blacksmith by trade, who worked with Mr. Hooper in North Ward, last summer, was frozen to death on the road leading from this place to Wapsononock, near the latter place. He was seen to leave this place in the evening, considerably under the influence of liquor, and was found Thursday morning, lying in the road, as stated above. Esquire Humes held an inquest over the body on Thursday evening. ------------------- Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair

The subject of the above notice was born in Franklin county, Pa., and removed with his parents, when about 5 years of age, to Huntingdon (now Blair) county, where the remainder of his life was spent. He was a man of humble and quiet spirit--a man of prayer and a close student of God's Word. He professed faith in Christ, and united with the church of Hollidaysburg, about twenty-three years ago, and remained in its communion until dismissed to unite with the church of Altoona at its organization. In his old age he was nearly blind; his hearing was also much impaired. But for this loss he was greatly compensated. He could repeat a good part of the Scriptures from memory; and in this took much delight.--He trusted in God's covenant to him and his children.--He brought them up in the "nurture and admonition of the Lord," and had the blessedness of seeing them all--two sons and two daughters--members of the Church of Christ. His end was peace, for he slept in Jesus. "The chamber where the good man meets his fate Is privileged beyond the common walk Of virtuous life, quite on the verge of heaven." 1. [PABLAIR-L] Altoona Tribune, Jan. 1864
    2. Dedication.--The new Bethel, on the corner of Rebecca and Emma streets, Altoona, will be dedicated to the worship of Almighty God, on Sunday, January 17th inst., services commencing at 10 1/2 o'clock A.M. The public generally are respectfully invited to attend. S. S. Richmond Missionary in Charge. ----------------------------- Stabbing Affray.--On Monday last, Christ Feeney and Peter Smith, of this place, had an affray in Fritchey's store, in reference to money which Smith alleged Feeney owed him. Words ran high and finally ended in blows. During the fight Feeney drew a knife and stabbed Smith several times, once in the side, penetrating the lungs and endangering his life. Feeney was immediately arrested and placed in the "Lock Up," and on Tuesday morning constable Ely conveyed him to Hollidaysburg jail, to await the result of Smith's wounds. ------------------------- Masonic.--A. M. Lloyd, of Hollidaysburg, has been appointed D. D. G. High Priest for the counties of Blair, Cambria, Huntingdon and Mifflin for 1864. John Cresswell, of Hollidaysburg, is appointed D. D. Grand Master for the counties of Cambria, Blair, Huntingdon, Mifflin, Bedford and Fulton, for 1864. --------------------- DIED In this borough, on Wednesday, Dec. 31st, 1863, Mrs. MARGARET JANE HULL, aged about 63 years. On the 3rd inst., Mr. WILLIAM LOUDON, in the 72d year of his age. Mr. Loudon was one of our well-known citizens. Although he had reached a good old age he was until very recently in possession of excellent health, and died after a few days illness. He was one of the early settlers of Blair county, having moved to this section of country more than 50 years ago. When Altoona was built up to its borough limits, Mr. Loudon sold a portion of his farm adjoining on the west for building lots, and soon the town of Loudonsville sprung into existence. He was noted for honesty and generosity towards those with whom he had business transactions, and many who are now the possessors of comfortable homes, bear testimony to his liberality. He had much bodily pain before his death, yet he expressed himself comfortable, as he cheered others, with his faith in the consolation of the Gospel. -------------------------- MARRIED At the M. E. Parsonage, Sept. 17th, 1863, by Rev. Wm. R. Mills, Mr. WM. T. MILLER to Miss MOLLIE J. TROUT, both of Altoona. In Altoona, at the Exchange Hotel, on the 31st Dec. 1863, by Rev. S. J. Berlin, Mr. ABEDNEGO SMITH, of Logan township, to Miss EMERETTA TURNBAUGH, of Antes township, Blair county, Pa. On the 31st. ult., by Rev. A. H. Sembower, Mr. JORDAN S. FOX to Miss REBECCA STANLEY, both of Clearfield county. On the 5th inst., by the same, JOHN S. CALVERT to Miss BELLE KOUGH, both of Logan township. In Wilmore, Cambria county, on the 31st. ult., by the Rev. I. Hackett, Mr. HENRY A. McPIKE, of this place, to Miss ANNIE WARD, of the former place. Thrice welcome, Mac, to the list of happy men, happily mated. Sensible to the last, securing a bedfellow just in time for the cold snap. Knowing Mac to be one of the cleverest fellows this side of sundown, we cannot do otherwise than wish him well, and hope that all the joys which flow from the union of happy natures and true hearts, may be showered upon him and his through life; and may that life be long, extending even to a green old age. And with increasing years may health, and wealth, and joys increase, and cares and vexations vanish. Go, young men all, and do likewise. ----------------- Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair
