    1. [PABLAIR-L] Burns family of Blair and Huntingdon Co. - early 1800's
    2. Hansen
    3. I am beginning to research the BURNS family of Huntingdon and Blair Co., Pennsylvania. My ancestor is Mary E. Burns wife of Frederick SHENEFELT. She was born about 1800 and died in 1834. I believe her father may be Abraham Burns. He often signs his name as "A. Burns. " There are several Burns families shown in the 1810 census of Huntingdon - and a rather large one shown in Antis Twp, Blair in 1850. I would appreciate any help on this line. Thank you - Linda Hansen

    2. TYRONE TOPICS Mr. Mahlon Cryder will open a term of school at Tipton in a few days. Mr. John Albright has returned restored to his former good health, which his friends will learn with much pleasure. Lawyer Stevens last week placed in front of his cozy home the finest and most suitable iron fence in town, costing but a trifle more than the ordinary picket fence. Mr. George Beyer, son of Mr. F. D. Beyer, left last week for Montana territory. George is young and vigorous, and we hope to hear of his winning success in the far west. Mr. Harry Myers, a student of Lehigh university, is home on a short visit. Harry is one of the few of Tyrone's ambitious young men who means to make his mark in the world. On Saturday last 865 loaded cars were brought over the Clearfield branch. Allowing twenty-two tons, as an average to the car, givens a tonnage of 19,030 tons, which exceeds by 1,100 tons the trade of any preceding day. The Friendship hook and ladder company on Saturday purchased a lot sixty feet front by 170 feet deep, fronting on Blair street, for the sum of $250. The boys have ordered new uniforms and mean to make a fine display here or somewhere else on the glorious Fourth of July. Mr. Cal Anderson, who received painful scalds about the face, eyes and neck, last week, is feeling comfortable. That he will lose the sight of his eyes is a mistake. His eyes are all right. The accident occurred at the paper mill, and was caused by boiling liquor flying into his face. --------------------------------------- SINKING VALLEY NOTES Old winter is loath to allow the fickle maiden spring to assume control. There is considerable sickness in our valley at present, originating from bad colds. Catharine, wife of James Temple, is seriously from erysipelas of the face, with slight hope of recovery. Warren Crawford, from some unknown cause, has mysteriously disappeared and his whereabouts is anxiously looked for by his numerous friends. David Crawford and wife were suddenly called away to Cumberland valley to attend the funeral of Willie, son of Rev. Henry Fleck, Mrs. Crawford being a sister of the reverend gentleman. We have had some trouble in securing our new postoffice, not by any defect of the department at Washington, but by the meddling of some one in the employ of the department. We have our suspicion resting on a certain person and until he comes out with a denial we will allow them to rest right there. However, we secured the office all the same. On Friday the remains of Adie Russell were lowered into the silent tomb. Mr. Russell was aged 85 years, 10 months and 3 days. He was strictly temperate in all things, honest and upright in all his dealing, charitable and kind to all in destitute circumstances, a good neighbor, a kind and loving husband and he passed away as gently as a babe falling asleep. His remains was followed to their final resting place by quite a large number of friends, relative and neighbors all willing to pay the last sad rite to a man who was honored and esteemed by all who knew him. Peace to his ashes. ------------------------------------------- MARRIED PARKS-CAWTHERN.-At Bell's Mills, April 17, 1884, by Rev. S. F. Forgens, Mr. Emmanuel J. Parks, of Sabbath Rest, Blair county, to Miss Hannah Cawthern, of South Forks, Cambria county. McNAUL-DILLEN.-At the Eighth avenue M. E. parsonage, April 15, 1884, by Rev. G. Leidy, Mr. W. P. McNaul, of Coalport and Miss Susie Dillen, of Utahville. ROBERTSON-HAGERTY.-April 15, 1884, by Rev. J. L. Russell, Mr. William Robertson and Miss Kate Hagerty, both of this city. ROSS-McELROY.-At the United Brethren parsonage on Tuesday evening, April 17, 1884, by Rev. M. O. Lane, Mr. Nehemiah A. Ross, of Altoona, Pa., and Miss Armante McElroy, of Huntingdon, Pa. COLEBAUGH-HENGST.-All the following parsonage, Claysburg, Pa., by Rev. W. M. Andrews, on April 10, 1884, Mr. F. B. Colebaugh and Miss Ellen Hengst, both of King township, Bedford county. --------------------------- DIED ELLIS.-April 19, 1884 at the residence of her brother, James B. Wilson, of consumption, Mrs. Lillie M. Ellis, daughter of E. R. and Ezra D. Wilson, deceased, aged 24 years, 10 months and 23 days. ------------ Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair

    2. BEARS-David Brown, Jacob Confer and other Nimrods living at Canoe Creek, killed four bears on Thursday last. They (the bears) came down from the mountain, probably in search of food, and crossed the turnpike a few rods from Mr. Brown's house, where they were perceived and the dogs started after them. They were soon treed, one after another, and shot. They are thought to be the same "critturs" which a day or two after the election chased George W. Reed, on his way home from this place with the returns. Hollidaysburg Register. ---------------------------------------------------- RE-OPENING.--The vestibule and audience room of the Methodist E. Church, in this place, having been papered, painted and otherwise fitted up in the most handsome style, will be opened for divine service on Sabbath morning next, at 11 o'clock. We think that all who visit the Church will agree with us when we say that the audience room is decidedly the neatest outside of the cities, and that there are but few in the cities that surpass it. -------------------------------- MAMMOTH CABBAGE--We are indebted to James Park, of Allegheny Furnace, for two heads of cabbage, weighing respectively eighteen and a half and nineteen and a half pounds. They were "scroungers," and no mistake. They would "scrouge" out of their place a half dozen of the heads generally offered for sale this season. It would not take over twenty-five or thirty such heads to make the largest dutchman in the country enough "Sauer-Kraut" to do him over winter. If any one can beat the above, in the cabbage line, we should like to see the article. Anderson's potatoes are still ahead in the potato line. ------------------------------------ MAN KILLED--A railroad accident occurred in the Narrows, between Lewistown and Mifflin, on Thursday last, by which Dr. S. S. Cummings of the former place, was instantly killed. He had driven down the Pike to a point below the dam, crossed the river in a skiff and was walking down the track to visit a patient, when he met a Westward bound freight train. He stepped from the track of the freight train and was standing on the other track, looking at the train passing, when the East Mail Train Eastward came dashing along the track on which he was--the engine striking him, fracturing his skull, and instantly killing him. ---------------------------------------------- NEW BANK--The "First National Bank of Hollidaysburg" commenced business on last Monday, Col. William Jack is the President and Robert Johnston Cashier. The bank is chartered with a capital of $50,000 with the privilege of increasing it to one hundred thousand. They have not yet commenced paying out the new issue, but will do so in a very few days. For the present the business will be conducted in the building lately occupied by "Johnston, Jack & Co." This bank will meet the wants of business men of the whole county.--Register.
