Hi, I am new to this list. I am looking for anyone with information on Alexander & Lizze Wentzel (or Wensel) family. They were both born around 1839/1840. Death dates are unknown. I believe that Lizzie's maiden name was Weaver. Also looking for information on Samuel and Margaret Gathers. Samuel was born around 1824 and Margaret was born around 1832. It's possible that Margaret was a Wentzel/Wensel and was the sister of Alexander. I have found several instances of them in census listings, but I don't have any connection to earlier ancestors. I am going on a hunch that they have a connection to my Wensel line that originated in Centre County. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Dave
Hello All, Since people are always asking about nice places to stay in Altoona, I thought I would recommend the newly opened Elizabeth Rest Bed & Breakfast in Pinecroft. I stayed there last week and it was lovely. Check it out at www.elizabethrest.com. The house was built in 1830 by Edward Bell. Cheers, Sharon

Hi List, My 3rd Great Grandmother Susannah (HENRY) FLOT died in Altoona on September 24, 1899. (Born 1812 in Franklin County, PA) According to her obituary, she was living with her daughter Mary (Mrs. John) McKNIGHT and family. Does the courthouse or local historical society have death records/certificates for 1899? I'm hoping to find this record shows her parents' names. HOLLIDAYSBURG On account of being considered a very unlucky day, Friday is always a poor one at the marriage license booth at the courthouse. Often times a blank is recorded on that day and it is a rare thing for more than one or two licenses to be issued. But yesterday was very different to the rule, as seven couples applied for the necessary papers to wed, having no fear of the jinx. On account of sickness in the pastor's home, there will be no Sunday school services nor church services in Zion Lutheran church on Sunday. Oliver J. Dixon, general secretary of the Hollidaysburg YMCA, has purchased the Williams McKillip property on North Union street, lately vacated by Mr. Warner who removed to Texas. Mr. Dixon and family will take possession of their new home in a few days. The annual farm products show held at the court house at Hollidaysburg this week came to an end yesterday afternoon. The finest apples were boxed and sent to State College to be exhibited there today; Pennsylvania Day. The rest of the apples were sent to the Industrial Home at Williamsburg where the children will feast upon the fruit. The potatoes and corn were returned to their owners. Many people visited the show during the week and it is was generally pronounced the best ever held in the county. The Union Thanksgiving service will be held on Thursday, November 25th, at the Presbyterian church. The sermon will be preached by Rev. Stanley Kemp, D.D., of the Lutheran church and a special music program will be rendered. Mrs. Emma Harter of East Waterford, Pa., has returned home after a visit to her son, Rev. E. E. Harter, pastor of the Methodist church. Thomas W. Ernest of Pittsburg was a business visitor in town yesterday. St. John's Reformed church, Rev. George A. Ehrgood, pastor. Sunday school at 10:00 a.m. preaching service at 7:30. This service will be of a missionary nature. Merle Dean Varner and Miss Nannie Rebecca Hunt, both residents of Johnstown, were united in marriage by Justice of the Peace C. Irwin Lewis, at his sanctum on Allegheny street, yesterday morning at 11 o'clock. The bride is a very estimable young woman and the man of her choice is a popular carpenter. At the conclusion of a wedding trip, the newly weds will take up housekeeping in the Flood City. Sinking Valley Mrs. Hartshorn, widow of Brigadier General Ross Hartshorn, of the Civil war, who has been a guest at the Presbyterian manse, returned to Clearfield on Monday to cast her vote. She was accompanied by her grandson Walter H. Harnish. Mr. and Mrs. John Whitaker and daughter, Miss Marian, of Harrisburg, were over Sunday guests with their kinsfolk at the Presbyterian manse. William Morrison Morrow, of Altoona, spent the week end with his aunt, Miss Fannie Mower. There were thirty women registered in Tyrone district No. 1, and not withstanding the rainy day, twenty-nine cast their ballot Tuesday. Rally Day service in the Presbyterian church on Sabbath at 11 o'clock, Sabbath school at the usual hour. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Briggs and family were called to Juniata county over the week end to attend the funeral of Mrs. Briggs father.
