I'm replying to the email message from Michele Pierson. I just joined the PABlair website hoping to read about people searching for ancestors and history and I have been extremely disappointed in the amount of emails that there are being exchanged. I am not a professional researcher but am extremely interested in finding more information on some of my ancestors from the Blair County area. I have exhausted the information that I could gather from Ancestry.com and was hoping that PABlair would be the answer to my research. I have found my Great Great Grandparents, William and Margaret McKinney in the 1850 census, but have been unable to find what happened to most of their children (other than Henry). I am also searching for the birth parents of Charles Ager who was born about 1887, but I know for a fact that his mother's name was Sara/Sarah Neff. I do not know if this was a married name or a given name. I do know that at age 13, Charles Ager took the name of his stepfather, Henry McKinney (my Great Grandfather). These people lived in Blair County and were usually found in the Antis Township area. I have been told that Charles Ager (my grandfather) was born in Bellwood, PA. Is there anyone out there that can direct me as to where I can find marriage records or additional information on my ancestors? Thank you, Nancy Cramer Myrtle Beach, SC ----- Original Message ----- From: "My Belle" <[email protected]> To: "PABLAIR" <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, August 14, 2007 11:45 PM Subject: PABlair What happened to the obits? > The Blair list used to post obits every day, there used to be lots of information exchanged by posters and list members, and it used to be one of the most active boards I'd subscribed to. What happened to kill off the exchange of info here? It now seems the Centre Co. board (thank you, Justin Kirk Houser!) is the most active list remaining of those I subscribe to, and I rarely get mail from the Blair list at all anymore. For those of us who live out of state, it has been a major blow to lose this flow of info, especially those obits we'd all come to expect in our mailboxes on a daily basis. I, for one, miss Annie Whiteman's helpfulness and generosity in posting them daily for those of us still trying to break down the brick walls our ancestors built around themselves. > > Michele Gibson Pierson > > still researching Gibson, Weir, Calhoun, Frederick, as well as many side branches > > ________________________________________ > PeoplePC Online > A better way to Internet > http://www.peoplepc.com > > > > ----------------------------------- > No flaming permtted on this list. 3. I have a reference to an Orphans Court record. It appears on a 1889 deed for land in Greenfield Township. I does not give a volume number but does give page number. The deed reads: "See proceedings in the Orphans Court of Blair County vol ___ page 250." Is there an index for the Orphans Court records? If not can anyone point me in the right direction to find this reference. Are Orphans Court records kept at Blair County Gen. Library? Thank you, Carol in Baltimore

    3. Hello, RAOGK is Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness and if you haven't used it you may be in for a treat! As a volunteer in my NY county, I go to the library and find obits and go to the records center and do cemetery lookups and naturalization lookups. - all free. I have obtained obits from volunteers from many states, death certificates from California, and digital pictures from cemeteries - most free or just a small fee. Go to http://www.raogk.org/ If you like what you see, consider becoming a volunteer. You can do as little or as much as you like. Happy hunting! 2. I am one of the many out-of-state genealogists who has benefitted from Annie's generosity in sharing time, resources, advice....I am grateful for, and in awe of, her tireless "genealogical kindnesses". It's a shame if there are people who chose to repay that kindness by "stirring things up" and forwarding an obviously private communication. Leah -----Original Message----- From: Nancy Cramer <[email protected]> To: My Belle <[email protected]>; PABLAIR <[email protected]> Sent: Wed, 15 Aug 2007 1:17 pm Subject: Re: PABlair What happened to the obits? 3. To Annie and Everyone: I just joined this PABlair website and at first I was disappointed because I did not see hardly any exhanges of information----well, I just want you all to know that since I posted my request, I have received so many replies and have been given so much valuable information that I am just overwhelmed and I am now going through everything and I just wanted to make sure that I properly thank everyone who has already tried to help me and I am here to stay. Now, I just hope that I can be of help to others who may be my distant relatives!! 1. Re: PABlair where do I find old obits?
    2. I'm looking for an old obit for Blair Co, ancestor died in 1852 and is buried in town of Roaring Spring, but also had offspring who lived in Altoona area, so he may have lived there as well. He was also in No.Woodbury Twp during his lifetime, so maybe something there? Not sure where the obit may have been published? Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. 1. PABlair floppy drive external thingy
    2. Did I not just write today and say how wonderful you all are? Well, it seems everyone in the world knew about the floppy drive thingy, except me and possibly the old lady that lives next door. I would ask her, but she would turn out knowing, and then I would feel really stupid. As soon as I can get a pair of shoes on, I will trot off to Best Buy or Target (I didn't even know Target had a computer department) and ask for one. I just picture you all sitting out there thinking 'oh the poor thing, she is clumsy and stupid' however I do plan on trying to educate myself on these computer things, but I really don't see much hope in becoming less clumsy. I have fallen on the person walking down the stairs in front of me at the hospital, I have fell on the boardwalk and knocked down a surrey driver, I have tripped Mickey Mouse at Disneyland, and a waitress at Dave's Dream. There is no hope for me in that department, but I will definitely be working on my computer skills. 1. Re: PABlair Problem with new computer - no floppy drive
    2. Hi Annie After my MAC computer breathed it's last, and my husband insisted that I switch to a PC and Windows. To my dismay it didn't have a floppy drive, and I had tons of stuff on floppies. The problem was solved by going to Fry's Electronics store and purchasing an external floppy drive. Most are priced under Forty Dollars and simply plug into my USB port. Problem solved. I have decided to get an older computer for the floppies. I have thousands of obits on the floppies, and boxes of obits waiting to be scanned, I am not going to let the obits go away. ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour

    3. Those Tyrone Daily Herald obits Sharon's contributing are here http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/blair/obits.htm And for anybody who doesn't know or who has forgotten, the current ones are at http://www.tyronepa.com/herald/ The Altoona Mirror is here http://altoonamirror.com/index.asp And the Tribune Democrat also has Blair county obits. They're here http://www.tribune-democrat.com/ The Altoona Library has a wonderful index to the Altoona Mirror obits here http://www.altoonalibrary.org/obit/default.htm I've never been able to decide whether I like obits or wills best. Both usually give you the names of parents, children and relatives, and whoever made that earlier comment about finding cousins through them is right on the money. I recently found a Rogers cousin I didn't even know I had, when I found an obit online, and it turns out she lives four miles from me. <GRIN> Annie: go for the external floppy drive that plugs into your USB port, rather than buying an older computer. Switching from one computer to another is a royal pain, and the older ones have a nasty habit of dying in the middle of a big project. Head for Best Buy when you get over your fall off the porch. 2. Tomi Larson
    3. Hello, I think it's too bad that there aren't a few more volunteers on the RAOGK - Blair County site. This is a wonderful resource for genealogists. The volunteers currently listed for Blair are very helpful, but it must be a lot of work for only two people! There is so much information to be had from the BCGS and local papers, but it's hard for those of us not in the area to get at it! So, think about volunteering if you've ever had obit or other research help yourself from a RAOGK volunteer or some other kind soul. 3. Hello List, Recently there was a posting about the BCGS: "I haven't had the pleasure of working with the BCGS yet, I'm trying to decide how to write my request, but it is my understanding they are volunteers and if like any typical nonprofit probably overworked. For those of us the live out of the area we need to rely sometimes on the goodness of others to do our research. I would wish they would have more information available on the web though." I am out of state and have had a volunteer from the BCGS help me quite a bit in the past, so give it a try. I was very happy with the research he did for me via email and snail mail. But, it was quite expensive for the time and copies. I also agree that we need people in the area to help out with research. I volunteer to get obits and naturalization papers for anyone in my NY county. We all need to help each other to keep costs down. Also, local knowledge is a GREAT thing! Thanks to all the Blair folks who help us out. Tomi Larson Oswego, NY _________________________________________________________________ Learn.Laugh.Share. I am sorry you are disappointed with the list, but--McKinney is definitely a name from Bellwood and Tyrone. I will check what I have for that area, and email you. Don't allow yourself to get discouraged, just keep plugging. I remember what a woman told me a few years ago, when she first started she thought she would research her husband's family, have that all done in at most six months, and here it was 20 years later, and she was still working on it. I have met some members of the list, and some I have never seen, but feel as though I know them very well. I have always believed that this list is perfect, no complainers (except me) everyone generous and giving. I think you will be happily surprised with the response you will get from listers trying to help you. Don't give up. I am feeling very mellow today, not at all my usual prickly self. My youngest dog pulled me off the front porch yesterday, causing me to fall over two planters and landing on my face. Thank God my daughter was here, because she helped me up, checked me for broken bones (none) bruises, (lots) cuts (three) and a very sore toe on my right foot. This morning she brought something over that my grandson was prescribed when he pulled a tendon at football practice. I don't remember the name, it is a blue pill, and I love it. It seems to me that everything still hurts, but I don't really care. ; ) Annie Whiteman PABlair List administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair <BR><BR>**************************************<BR> Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour</HTML>
