Are there any Ritchey researchers on the list? Sure would like to find this woman's first name. I hate to upload obits that are just for Mr. or Mrs. so-and-so. HOLLIDAYSBURG HAPPENINGS. Mrs. Richey, an aged inmate of the almshouse, died the other day. She was over 80 years of age, and her former home was in Juniata township. Morning Tribune, Monday, January 12, 1880 She can't be Mary Ritchey, mother of George S., because Mary Ritchey is enumerated in the 1880 census in June. Judy

Hi List, I have in my possession two books on Williamsburg, Pa. One is the Bicentennial of Williamsburg and the other is the 175th anniversary of Williamsburg. If there is anyone who would like them, let me know and I will mail them to you. Maxine
Would anyone have any genealogy information on the Paul Just family from Altoona in the early 1900's. Also, any information on names and history of old hotels in the South Fork and Blair County (for example the Lake Hotel). Thanks. Connie

Bobby, http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/pa/blair/bios/donehoo/gable-william-f.txt Wm. F. Gable was a major book collector, and important books from his collection are still being sold at auction. A few years ago a British bookplate scholar contacted me because Gable had helped a young artist named Plank, whose sister worked at Gables in Altoona. Plank's art consisted largely of bookplates, and, although I'm not sure of this, he may have designed Wm. F. Gable's personal bookplate. The bookplate scholar was researching Plank, not Gable. This article found in Blair Archives identifies Louisa (GLANT) Bunker - wife of Benjamin M. Bunker, of Altoona. Hoping someone recognizes this family. Dau. Anna Margaret Bunker married Frederick Beaumont Sheldon in 1925. And other dau. Helen Louise Bunker b. 1900. Donna GLANT Terrian, Apopka, FL [email protected] BLAIR COUNTY HISTORY, VOL. 2 - 61 HARRY LANG JOHNSTON has been managing editor of the Altoona Mirror for nearly a quarter of a century and has been identified with newspaper work since 1892. Born at Hollidaysburg, Pa., April 1, 1873, he is a son of William Noble and Laura (Lang) Johnston, both natives of the same place, the former having been associated with Hollidaysburg newspapers throughout his life. He obtained his education in the public schools and learned the trade of printer in the shop of the Democratic Standard, of Hollidaysburg. In 1892, he became a compositor with the Altoona Times, of which he was made city editor in 1893, a position which he retained until June, 1900. At that time, he became a reporter with the Altoona Mirror, was subsequently advanced to the city editorship, and was appointed managing editor in 1908. He has since occupied that position. He has served as president of the Pennsylvania State Editorial Association, since merged with the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers' Association. He is a member of the Odd Fellows and served as president of the Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce in the same year. He attends the First Baptist Church. During the Spanish- American War, he served as regimental sergeant-major of the Fifth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Mr. Johnston married Annie Cherry Bunker, daughter of Benjamin M. and Louisa (Glant) Bunker, the former a building contractor of Altoona, and they have two children, Helen Louise, teacher of modern languages, McKeesport High School, and Anna Margaret, the latter of whom is the wife of Frederick B. Sheldon.
122 new obits and marriage notices, most of them new material online. I started on my 1890 reel of microfilm, finished up the first quarter 1900 reel, and had some contributions of other obits from various dates. There's one Altoona Tribune marriage notice, lyon-bair, that appeared in the Altoona Mirror as lyon-blair. I left both notices online instead of combining them, as I'm not sure which is correct. I find name discrepancies between the two papers, in different issues of the same newspaper, on different pages of the same issue . . . . Reminds me of searching the census. Also, every time I link files I find (my) alphabetization errors. If you don't see something you expect to find on a page of links, look up and down the page a little. I'm practicing the alphabet song. I'll need it for the new granddaughter, anyway. I remember reading that Mark Twain visited the area when he rode the Inclined Plane at Mountain Lake to Cresson. Do you think this was the visit?? My favorite is still the Baltzell cottage. I am going to look up his obituary, find the exact location of the cottage, and go see where it sat. The more I look at it (it is now my wallpaper on the computer) I think I see a figure standing at the right at the top of the stairs. By the way, I seem to remember that Mark Twain was not too impressed with his visit to the area. The Cloudcroft mystery photo reminded me of another couple of Altoona mystery postcards I bought some time ago on eBay, so I rummaged around on the bookcases in my office and found them, scanned, uploaded and linked them just now. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/blair/1picts/altpcards/altoonapcards.htm Take a look at the photo postcard of the ruins of the Imperial Department Store, and also at the photo postcard of William Gable. I swear the man sitting front right in that photo is Mark Twain. What do you think? The back of the postcard simply says it was taken by the Gables photography department. No details. I added a couple of other postcards, too. No more mysteries, though. Judy

Judy and Annie, I live in Ohio and have talked to both of you online many times. I have alot of memories of my home town. I remember my grandmother taking us to Lakemont Park. She would give us tickets for rides for the whole evening while she played bingo. My aunt was in charge of us and we would have a ball. I remember walking down 11th Ave on a Sunday afternoon and looking in all the store windows then stopping at Walgreens and getting a coke or ice cream soda. Growing up we lived on 16th Street and 17th Ave., across the street from Carl's Dairy Store. We always called it PeRo's. My sister was back there this past summer and took some pictures of the duplex we lived in which was owned by Goss's. She also took pictures of my grandmother's house a block away. She sent me those pictures and it brought tears to my eyes. It was not like I remembered. The neighborhood is so run down. I remember, growing up, that all the properties were so kept up and owners took pride in their homes. My grandmother's old house actually had a grocery cart setting on the property. I guess things are suppose to change but it just breaks my heart to see the old neighborhood look that bad. Have a good weekend, Maureen ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

When I get good and homesick for PA (like when it's 102 degrees in Georgia for weeks at a time), I go to Elaine Conrad's Wopsy site http://www.pennswoods.net/~econrad/ and look at this photo - http://www.pennswoods.net/~econrad/wphotos/WopsyViewCurrent.jpg Very, very corny, but makes you realize why the Altoona High School alma mater starts out "Blow, oh gentle mountain breezes." (Toldja it was corny.) Please let us know if Joe can figure out where Cloudcroft is/was. No, I don't think so, unless Judy has expanded her locations.
