    2. Jennie Amrhein is part of the Streightiff family and has been researching the name forever. I hope she sees your post, if not, I will tell her about it. All that I know about him, is that he was a family friend and they lived either next door to us or maybe a house away. This was on the road outside of Williamsburg to Hollidaysburg. There use to railroad tracks there that belonged to the paper mill. It was one of those houses that we lived in and so did he and his family. This is from my memory of when I was around four or five years old and before we moved to Ohio. 2. I don't have a tsp. of this, T. of that recipe. I just sprinkle sugar on the cukes and onions, and right before dinner add vinegar, a little salt and stir it up. Now I use splenda instead of sugar, but it tastes the same to me. 3. Okay, the guys (and some of the women) are probably thinking we've all gone nuts, but I do think it's important - and fun - to preserve some traditions. Also, most of our grandmothers and some of our moms were housewives, and took great pride in their cooking and their special "receipts." I'm glad the devil's food cake turned out. That was just a shot in the dark, because I could identify the woman in the census! If you're going to misbehave and eat things SOME people say you shouldn't, try a couple of the recipes I put online. I got us started, with some of my mom's (Sally's) scrumptious recipes I did manage to save (including my unusual coconut wedding cake), plus a couple other good ones I make all the time. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/blair/receipts.htm Contributions gladly accepted, and I'll try to add them between typing obits and playing with the granddaughter. My grandmother used bacon to flavor her vegetables, made her pie crusts with lard, and lived to be 88, so I agree with the folks who've said good health and long life aren't entirely determined by the foods we eat. That said, and having sat here too long, I'm going for a long walk, folks. Then maybe I'll make a shoo-fly pie (which recipe, btw, is for the "dry" rather than the "wet" pie). I wouldn't want my cholesterol, sugar and iron levels to drop too far. Judy P.S. Note that the text with the photo of the range says the store is "near the subway." What subway? P.P.S. I always cook and bake wearing a dress, a ruffled organdy apron, and heels; don't you?

    1. PABlair Carothers in 1880 census
    2. Hello Listers, I found a William Carothers in Antis Twp. in 1860, wife Anna Maria. Children: Joseph 11 Jacob 9 Margaret 7 Robert 4 Elmira 3 Jackson 8.12 I found another William in 1870 with other children and one of those children are Thaddeus about 5 yrs. old. The age of the William matches the age of the William in 1860. In 1880 Thaddeus disappears and doesn't show up again until 1900 married to Lottie. I have used soundex as the name is spelled different in all the census records. I even checked in other states. I know Thaddeus's father was William and his mother was Anna Maria. I'm thinking Anna Maria may have died between 1866 and 1870 and is buried in Bellwood. Any help on where I could check next would be greatly appreciated. Seems like I always have some kind soul who is willing to help and I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have helped in the past. Thank you, Maureen ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

    2. One more voice. This cake is something my mother would have made with all the butter. She lived to be 96 years old. I plan to do the same:) Barbara ________________________________________________________________________ Email and AIM finally together. You've gotta check out free AOL Mail! - http://mail.aol.com

    3. Debbie, you sound like my wife, how many points!!! We just got back from the grocery store and she checks the break, rolls etc for points, lol. Be careful when you start to substitute things in recipes because they aren't the same, voice of experience. Make it the way it calls for, just take a smaller serving (Weight Watchers). Bobby

    2. Aha!! Weight Watchers!!! I know what that is, but have never actually went to a meeting. I have a sister-in-law that goes regularly, but obviously I have never asked her about it. I simply no longer sit next to her at family functions. I have a fat cousin that I sit next to now. 2. Just letting you know that I now have two volunteers that will be scanning and helping me with the obits. I have a package ready to be mailed to Deb, first volunteer, and Carol, scanned obits and sent them to me the other evening. She is very fast at scanning. There should not be a problem now. If the disk is bad, I will toss it, there is no saving the old disks. Carol saves her scan in a different form, and I will try that. 3. William Berckheimer complained that the large tower of the Methodist Episcopal church was cracked and that life and property were endangered thereby. Mr. Berckheimer said: "They told me that when the little tower fell down in May it was the act of God. Now, if the big tower falls, won't it be the act of the devil?" Councilmen Lindsay and Henshey were appointed to confer with the church trustees as to the safety of the tower. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Tuesday, July 4, 1899
