James Ebbs B. 09/16/1796 (date retrieved from The Keystone Gazette) no obituary has been found. He was the son of Emanuel Ebbs I & Nancy Cannon. He married Margaret McKee b. Abt 1806 d. 1865. She died at age 65. It does not appear that James & Margaret had any children. Emanuel Ebbs I served in the Revolutionary War & that is who they were commenting about in the note below. ----- Original Message ----- From: Beth Campbell Rykhus To: slbearer Sent: Tuesday, October 16, 2007 4:18 PM Subject: Re: [PACAMBRI] James Ebbs Susan, Which Ebbs family is this James connected to ? He is now 96 years of age, having reached that age on the 16th of last month. Mr. Ebbs' health is reasonably good and he is active. But for five years past he has been quite deaf. Mr. Geo. Cornelius, who was in Bellefonte on Turesday, informs us that Mr. Ebbs' father was in the revolutionary war and that he lived to the rare old age of 111 years. He was a tinker by trade and the soldier with which the old gentleman used to work is still preserved in Mr. Cornelius' family. While it is extremely sad that Mr. Ebbs is afflicted with blindness yet he is taken good care of by affectionate relatives and it is to be hoped that he will survive many years longer. - - - - - - - - - - Search for more Cambria County information on our webpage: http://www.rootsweb.com/~pacambri/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
This is MY opinion of the exchange regarding recipes and food on the Blair list. I have had one offlist request to change the path the list was heading, and as I explained; this list doesn't get cluttered with offtopic issues often, and actually is a very quiet list. A few days of this will not hurt anyone, and since everyone has been diligent in the subject line, there is always the delete option. I encounter the same thing at the beginning of the year when we have our roll call. I am accustomed to getting hundreds of emails daily, and would be shocked to find only half that amount. I understand not all of you expect or want that amount of emails, but I would either delete, or sit back and enjoy the emails. I find the emails very interesting and I have gotten two terrific pumpkin recipes from a lister.(we rushed the first recipe over to my daughter and discovered I had forgotten today is the day she is not to eat, preparing for a medical procedure) It also gives me a push ! to work my brain a little bit, trying to remember what stood where and the names of the little shops at the farmer's market. Luann: I totally agree! Along with finding the ancestry lines that are so important, also of importance are the "memories, foods and stories" of the area which all of these ancestors shared. My family worked up a document of not only the "tree information", but also paragraphs of family history regarding "stories, recipes and memories". Those paragraphs turned out to be the most interesting parts of the Family History Document! A lot of this information regarding the recipes and memories was triggered by others on the rootsweb site recounting their experiences and memories! I also belong to LowerDelmarvaRootsweb and the same problem occurred. One person complained that the recipes were not of genealogical significance. It was one of the most significant parts which joined us all together from that area!!! Our "joy" of our "shared memories and foods" was really slapped down by one person. When I read any entry on any of the rootsweb websites that I belong to, if it does not pertain to me at all or is of no interest to me or I cannot help that person, then I just delete it. Personally, I enjoy all the information that I read on PABLAIR. It's great and everyone is so helpful; especially Annie! Robert, you questioned whether the material is of true genealogical significance. Speaking for myself... the answer is "yes" -- on two counts: 1. These emails have sparked many happy memories of my (dear departed) mom and grandmother and their home cooking. And the family activities/traditions that center around the food. Makes me realize I need to write down some of "my generation's" reminiscences ...along with the more historical research I do. 2. The emails gave me the idea to compile some family recipes as a Christmas present for "the clan"....most of whom find my "genealogy obsession" puzzling or boring... but the recipe collection will preserve and pass on at least part of the family history ...in a form they WILL appreciate! So, Robert... while I understand and respect your opinion, at the same time I'm really appreciative of ideas this "recipe stuff" has inspired. And for what it's worth, I join you in voting for free samples of chocolate cake for all the List Members <grin> Luann -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: "Robert Barnes" <[email protected]> > I am reluctant to bring this up, but I do want to report that my email today > contained 19 messages, of which 14 were on the Blair County "Cookbook." > Although the recipes ("sugar," vinegar in milk, pot pie, usw.) are perhaps of > historical interest, and the gossip is no doubt enjoyed greatly in Blair County > and environs, I question whether much of the material is of true genealogical > significance. > Is there some way that the "Cookbook" material could be put into a separate > forum so that all subscribers to the Blair County site would not automatically > receive this information? Mary Elizabeth died 08/05/1932. You did catch the post that corrected my date of birth for her didn't you. I have been having real e-mail problems these last couple of days. Along with a list of other things, my e-mails just seems to be deleting themselves. Anyways the notes you sent me are gone from yesterday. Thanks goodness I printed the one you sent, & I have questions but I will have to get to that another time. Anyways, I did see the note to send more information on the Ebbs family before it disappeared. Since I don't know what you have may I suggest this. First I often refer someone to www.findagrave.com, I am trying to post all of the family obituaries there that I can, provided of course I know where they are buried so everyone might not be listed of course or I just might not have gotten to them yet. If you have any questions, OR CORRECTIONS, or just want me to add a few more just e-mail me. Also send any photos if you have any that can be added. If I think an obituary should be posted to a certain list other then Cambria's I will post any new obituaries when adding them to findagrave so you will know there are new ones. I realize there are a ton of people out there with the same name & you might not know all the names or want to search every person with that name, so what you can do to find just the people that I've posted is: When you go to www.findagrave.com, go to the search the 18 million records. Use any name that we share or just start with the name Emanuel Ebbs. The head of our clan, that we've been able to make it as far back on. Put PA in & that will bring you our two Emanuel's. I don't think there are any other Emanuel's in PA posted there. Anyways, after you hit search & his information comes up. My name as the contributor is at the bottom of the page. Click on my name & it will take you to my contributions. I think around 159 at this time it said. Click on the 159 contributions & those should be just the people that I have posted. Sarah Jane Ebbs Ward & her husband John M. Ward should both be there. If you have any questions, or as I said "CORRECTIONS" I am absolutely horrible at proof reading. Please let me know. I can always copy & paste from there if you don't seem to be able to bring someone up. Some of my direct ancestors came from Blair County, and I am finding your exchanges very interesting. I haven't a clue what you are talking about most of the time but I find myself wondering, did my relatives make pot pies, too? Is this why Mom always put sugar on her tomatoes and ate them for breakfast (along with all the other meals when they were in season)? It sort of gives me an idea of what their lives were like and what may have been passed down through the generations. Let's lighten up a little bit and enjoy life while we still can??? I am so glad to see the e-mails about Pot Pie. My mother was from Huntingdo, PA but moved to Niagara Falls, NY when she married. Pot Pie was one of my favorite meals but I never heard of anyone else having it in our area. Now I know it was probably from her mother. Mother's ancestry was Scotch and Irish but she cooked Pennsylvania Dutch. Barbara ----------------------------------- No flaming permtted on this list. This is one of the many spellings of this name. I don't think there is a relationship. When I was visiting in Huntingdon many many years ago there was an article in the paper mentioning that I was one of the out of town guests at a birthday party. My name at the time was Stratiff so I couldn't imagine why they spelled it Streightiff. Now I realize there was a family with that name living there. My great grandfather was born Henry Straighthoof in Tyrone, PA, went into the Civil War as Henry Straithoof, buried his wife first wife as Mary Straitiff and lies beside here in the cemtery as Henry Stratiff. There are many other variations of this name all sounding the same. To: <[email protected]> Hi List, Am going through old photos and trying to get them labeled and sorted. I came across a photo of Bud Straightiff (not sure of spelling) and wondered if anyone out there is researching this name and knows him. If so, they are welcome to the picture. All that I know about him, is that he was a family friend and they lived either next door to us or maybe a house away. This was on the road outside of Williamsburg to Hollidaysburg. There use to railroad tracks there that belonged to the paper mill. It was one of those houses that we lived in and so did he and his family. This is from my memory of when I was around four or five years old and before we moved to Ohio. I am now 70, so have really taxed my brain this time. <grin> Maxine ----------------------------------- No flaming permtted on this list. I just read the posting mentioning Plank Road and that jogged a memory in connection with my family. Does anyone on the List know anything about a restaurant and lunch owned and run by the BLAIR family on Plank Road? On the 1910 Census Edward Blair (22) and Mary (24) lists the restaurant and lunch as his occupation. I believe this Edward to be William Edward BLAIR son of Samuel and Margaret (O'NEAL) BLAIR. Samuel and Margaret are my gr. grandparents and according to Samuel's obit he died at his son's home on Plank Road. Friday, September 23, 1932 Samuel A. Blair a former resident of Six Mile Run; where he was a justice of the peace for many years, died last Thursday at the home of his son, Edward Blair, Plank Road, Blair County. Funeral services were held last Saturday afternoon from Church of God at Six Mile Run, Interment in the Duval Cemetery Any information appreciated. Yes, I believe that is where is was located. I think the hamburgers were 25 cents each and the fries were 15 cents. The hamburgers were served with mustard, ketchup and pickle. Boy the were good. Maureen ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

Had another flash back. I remember Tom and Joe's across the street from City Hall. I remember people standing in front of Gable's department store waiting to catch a bus. Hi Luann, Thanks for your reply, will go back and search allowing for broader view of misspelling, can't hurt. Thanks! Terri ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
I just got home from work and was checking my emails and I have so many memories of home (Altoona). We moved from there in 1968 when my husband returned from Turkey and was transferred to Columbus Ohio. We were married in 1966 and had a small apt. on 16th St. across from Pal Mino's Pizza Shop. We lived on the 4th floor, and I was pregnant with our first. I craved pizza then. Well, it was a hot August night and I was in my ninth month, had the swelled feet and was miserable. I called across the street to the pizza shop and told them I was across the street, on the fourth floor and was unable to climb the stairs and begged them to deliver a couple slices (my husband was in boot camp in Texas). They took pitty on me and in a few minutes they had delivered the pizza. At that time they didn't do delivery. I was in seventh heaven and if I could remember to this day who the kid was that brought that pizza to me I would give him a big kiss. Another memory I have is Texas Hot Dogs. To this day, when we make a trip back home, we always pick up a Texas Hot Dog. We have three grown kids with families of their own and they also make it a habit to get one when they go back to visit relatives. When we moved to Ohio I was surprised to find their version of pot pie. Pot pie to them is a pie made with the gravy, peas, carrots, meat and potatoes. That is what I always called meat pie. My mom made the best pot pie. She would add potatoes to the ham and broth and then she would drop square pieces of dough into the boiling pot. I haven't had that dish for years. I remember when the first fast food hamburgers came to Altoona. I must have been about 10 or 11 and my grandmother took us. We thought that was just the best. For the life of me, I can't remember where it was located. Maybe someone on the list has a better memory of that than I do. Keep the emails coming, I am really enjoying them. If we are remembering such things as the paper facrory, how about that long wooden bridge that went across the train tracks near Juniata.? I used to beg my dad not to go over that narrow, shaking, wooden bridge but that was the road that he would take every time we went to visit my aunt and uncle. Leah -----Original Message----- From: Frank Bobak <[email protected]> To: Blair County List <[email protected]> Sent: Mon, 15 Oct 2007 12:31 pm Subject: PABlair Blair County Cookbook I'm just lovin this!!!! While I'm not from Blair County (is Cambria close enough to become and honorary resident) and I no longer live in the area. The food is bringing back so many memories. As a kid, we visited relatives and occasionally drove through Tyrone. Who could forget that smell of the paper factory? While the topic is not genealogy based it makes us remember who we are and where we came from. Too many of our families (mine included) are scattered all over. It's such a pleasure reading these emails that have been posted. Makes me nostalgic. I'm working on a side tree for an elderly Uncle and he showed me the family plot. He and my Aunt plan on being laid to rest there and I've discovered a couple of my cousins plan on that as well. That will make seven generations. Incredible and today most likely unheard of. Thanks for letting me rant. This list is the best. Frank Bobak ----------------------------------- No flaming permtted on this list. I am reluctant to bring this up, but I do want to report that my email today contained 19 messages, of which 14 were on the Blair County "Cookbook." Although the recipes ("sugar," vinegar in milk, pot pie, usw.) are perhaps of historical interest, and the gossip is no doubt enjoyed greatly in Blair County and environs, I question whether much of the material is of true genealogical significance. Is there some way that the "Cookbook" material could be put into a separate forum so that all subscribers to the Blair County site would not automatically receive this information? Just think of all the energy which could be saved: growing food to sustain the reading and typing efforts, electricity (with associated carbon dioxide output) to run computers, labor to delete messages, usw. If I could smell the food cooking from out here in Washington state, perhaps I would feel differently. Or, if free samples were sent? (The chocolate cake sounds delicious)
