BLAIR COUNTY BOYS NAMES ON CASUALTY LIST Sunday's casualty list of wounded and missing in action contained the names of thirteen Blair county boys who are in action over in France. Three are from Tyrone, one from Juniata and the remainder from this city. No deaths from the county were reported in the Sunday's list. ARCH SNYDER LOSES FOOT IN WAR COUNTRY Private Archie Snyder, 23, of Claysburg, has been brought back to America with his left foot off and a fracture of the right foot and ankle, and he is now located in the U.S. General hospital, New Jersey. He was severely wounded in action on July 14 while fighting with Company L, Thirtieth infantry. The soldier is now at the United States hospital at Rahway, N.J., and is a patient in hospital No. 5, ward No. 4, where he expects to remain several months. Writing to his parents, Archie and Elwilda Snyder of Claysburg, the young soldier gives the first complete account of the action in which he was wounded and also gives the parents the first information as to the full extent of his injuries. "I am glad to be back in God's country, the good old U.S.A., once again," writes the soldier, from the Rahway hospital. "I have my left foot off entirely, while I am also suffering from two fractures of the right foot, one at the ankle joint, the other below the ankle." "I was wounded on Sunday morning, July 14, at 11 o'clock and I lay in the dugout until Monday morning when my comrades carried me to the clearing at the edge of the woods nearby. I lay there without attention all day with shot and shell flying all around and big trees crashing to the ground, while the ground around was filled with dead and dying. "I expected every minute to see the Huns come over to where I lay but towards evening my comrades resumed their charge and, helped by reinforcements they drove the Boche back. Then myself, with the other wounded, were gathered up and taken to the trench hospital. "My left foot was almost entirely shot away and I suffered considerably from the fractures of the other foot. At the hospital the left foot was amputated." Archie was wounded as he was going "over the top" in the drive of July 14 and fell several hundred yards from his trench position, being forced to remain there over night until the Yanks drove the Hun back in resuming the charge next day. The soldier served as cook in Company L, 30th infantry. He trained at Camp Greene, Charlotte, N.C., and was formerly employed at the Refractories plant at Claysburg. In a letter from Rahway the wounded hero states that he expects to be home for dinner at Christmas time, the soldier writing that he would have a "new" foot by that time. The soldier is one of the best young men in Claysburg and enjoys a wide acquaintance, members of the family and friends planning to visit with the hero at the Rahway camp. The soldier, in his recent letter, asks that his friends write, using the above address. There is a lot of happiness and relief in my family tonight. My grandson (the one that failed with the computer setup) has been accepted to Indiana University of PA. My grandson is not an idiot, but he acts like one, and we all had doubts he would be accepted. He of course was confident, and yet was terribly nervous opening the letter. I think I have a relative buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery that you are speaking of. Her name was Amelia "Minnie" Faust White. She was born in 1864 and died in 1911. Where is this Oak Grove Cemetary located near? What town? "Minnie" was my Great Grandmother's sister and I think she lived in Mill Hall. Would that make sense? Hello Listers, I'm researching William Carothers b. abt. 1820 and lived most of his life in Antis Twp. (Sabbath Rest). According to the Altoona Marriage Application Book, Thaddeus was the son of William and Anna Maria (?) Carothers. Thaddeus married Lottie Glunt. 1870 census: William - 50 yrs. (I'm assuming Anna Maria died after the birth of Thaddeus). Jane - 17 yrs. John - 16 yrs. William - 8 yrs. d. 3 May 1903 m. Susannah Douglas Ida - 6 yrs. Thaddeus - 3 yrs. Not finding any of the above until 1900 census and then I only find Thaddeus. Carrothers: Thaddeus - 34 yrs. Lottie M. - 30 yrs. Edward (Joshua) - 11 yrs. Viola - 9 yrs. Mabel - 7 yrs Belva - 1 Russell shows up in the 1910 census. I have the obit for Thaddeus which says his father is William but mother is unknown. Thaddeus m. first to Lottie M. Glunt and after her death he married Sarah Hassinger and resided in Cleveland, Oh. I tried to get an obit for William who died May 3, 1903, brother of Thaddeus, but no luck. About 4 miles SE of Elysburg within a few hundred yards of each other are the "Blue Church" (Lutheran) cem and the Oak Grove church and cem (Methodist). I have ancestors buired in each of them plus Pine Hill and Sharp Ridge (lots of Campbell's there). There is also a Baptist Cem about a mile N of the Reed's (Brick) church cemetery - up at the top of the hill through the woods.

I have relatives buried in Oak Grove and concur with Jennie: Folks my wonderful little book Tyrone of To-day pg 45 "about norhwest of Tyrone cemetery and reached by following 15th street west beyond the borough line, turning to the left and crossing Sinking Run, is the burial ground of the Catholic church. The Oak Grove I was looking for would have almost have to have been in at least Blair Co. The person, Zac Endress, owned a grocery store there and his Altoona Mirror obit said that he ..."lived in Oak Grove"..... I'm comfortable with the Oak Grove in Roaring Spring, Taylor Twp......so far anyway. Thanks to everyone who took the time to help.
