    3. KICK OFF OF ALTOONA, STATE GAME AT 2.30 Altoona High's football schedule will be pried open again this afternoon on the Cricket Field with the crafty State College High for an opponent. Last year both teams met in the opener on the same field after the Maroon and White transferred its local schedule from the East End athletic field to the Cricket field. That game was a thriller from start to finish. At the end of one solid hour's battle neither side had passed one another's goal line. Strangely, the visitors are due here shortly before the noon hour with a strictly veteran team - graduation last year making no inroads upon the football squad. On the other hand the Maroon and White combination has two-thirds of its present squad green but very promising lads who can be counted upon for one tough and scrappy bunch of players. According to the advance sale of tickets in the local High school yesterday a record crowd is anticipated on the Cricket field today. A squad of Pennsy bluecoats will be on hand to retain control of the playing field. Cheer leader Mutzabaugh has his band of 200 rooters groomed for a grand afternoon's rooting and songfest. A number of brand new classy yells have been rehearsed for today's contest which starts promptly at 2.30 with Referee Turner in the role of referee. Altoona Times, Altoona, Pa., Saturday Morning, November 9, 1918 ______________ Maybe somebody on the list should be taking bets! Notice that the Pennsy police were on duty to keep the peace. - Judy ____________ MISHLER THEATRE THIS WEEK Today and Saturday with continuous exhibitions each day starting at 1 o'clock today and at 10 a.m. Saturday and running until mid-night each day the last exhibition starting at 10:30. 3. PAUL DUNN WAS VICTIM OF GAS ATTACK, AT WAR Popular Young Business Man, Who Went to France After Short Preliminary Training, Gets Dose of Mustard Fumes - Getting Well Private Paul Dunn, a son of Mrs. Matthew Dunn, of 1703 Eighth avenue, was gassed while in action late in September, and is now in a base hospital, according to a letter received by Mrs. Dunn yesterday. It was written on Oct. 5 by the soldier and he stated that he had been absent from his company for two weeks. Private Dunn left this city in April for Camp Lee, and after six weeks of preliminary training was shipped to France as a member of Company D, 313th machine gun battalion, he failing to get a furlough before going to the other side. The letter stated that he was getting along nicely, and soon expected to return to his command. He was caught in a wave of mustard gas, hurled by the enemy, and before he could adjust his gas mask, had breathed some of the poisonous fumes. Private Dunn is well known in this city and before joining the army was connected with F. J. Hoover & company store, 1703 Eighth avenue. 3. INFLUENZA TAKES TOLL OF 162 IN OCTOBER Deputy Registrar of Vital Statistics Mrs. E. B. Raffensparger has completed the death statistical report for the month of October which shows that 162 deaths occurred in the city during the month of October from influenza and its accompanying complications. The epidemic claimed an average of five deaths a day during October. Influenza, without any complications resulted in thirteen deaths. Influenza followed by pneumonia resulted in 106 deaths, while la grippe followed by pneumonia caused seven deaths. Pneumonia, without any contributory cause, resulted in thirty-six deaths. The influenza and pneumonia deaths swelled the total from all causes in October to 236 deaths, the death record being the largest of any one month for many years. The October record is more than four times the death rate of September, when but fifty-nine deaths occurred in the city. Logan township reported a total of forty-six deaths in October, including twenty-three males and twenty-three females, with thirty-one dying from influenza and pneumonia. Altoona Times, Altoona, Pa., Wednesday Morning, November 6, 1918 --------------------- And I think these figures are just for Altoona and Logan township. I haven't seen a report for the rest of the county yet. I just want to let folks who are hoping for obituaries from Nov. 2 through Nov. 4, 1918, that the Altoona Times microfilm for Nov. 4 and Nov. 5, from which I'm transcribing, is missing a lot of pages, including the main obituary pages for those dates, and of course there was not a Sunday newspaper (Nov. 3). I found an Altoona Mirror death index for 1918 here - http://www.rootsweb.com/~pabcgs/deaths-1918-m-z.html - in case you need to order an obituary for that time period. I would suggest you get in touch with Jennie ([email protected]), her husband Roy printed off several of them for patrons earlier. 3. Maxine, In so far as I know, the book is out of print. However, I do have a copy of it and can do some look-ups if you want. The Clappers in America was researched and compiled by Marie Leighty Engel with Gerald H. Helsel as Contributing Assistant. It contains 566 pages (including the index) and was published in 1980. The addresses listed in the book are: Marie Leighty Engel; Route 2 Waller Road, Salisbuty, MD. 21801 and Gerald H. Helsel; 419 Poplar Street, Roaring Spring, PA 16673. I'm not sure either are still alive. There is no listing for Gerald Helsel in the local phone directories. 2. Annie, I recall a similar dish from my childhood....but not the exact recipe. But if you go to www.kraftfoods.com and search by recipe type "salads" and within that, "fruit salads"... there are a number of similar recipes you could adapt... one is called "Mini Waldorf" , and there are many recipes for various types of "Ambrosia" salads that have fruit, marshmallows, nuts..... with either whipped topping, Mayonnaise or Sour Cream. Nothing I found is exactly what you were looking for but the info may be close enough that you could improvise! Hope this helps! 3. ENTIRE FAMILY IN HOSPITAL The family of David C. Lingenfelter of Claysburg was found to be confined to their beds with well developed cases of pneumonia following the influenza to which all were victims and the father and mother and six small children have all been removed to the Nason hospital at Roaring Spring. Unable to obtain anyone to care for them at their home it was found necessary to remove the entire family to the hospital this week. The children, with the exception of the youngest and the mother, are not considered in any immediate danger although all have fully developed cases of pneumonia follwoing attacks of the influenza. The names of the children who with their parents are patients at the hospital are: Tillie, aged 10; Hester, aged 8; Esther, 7; John, 5; Elizabeth, 4, and James, a baby not quite 2 years old. The is only one of a number of instances where entire families have been stricken with attacks of the influenza and pneumonia although help is obtainable in most cases. 3. HOLLIDAYSBURG SOLDIER HURT DURING BATTLE Mrs. Margaret Tolston of Hollidaysburg received a message from the war department yesterday stating that her son, Eugene A. Metzgar was seriously wounded while in action on Oct. 12. The young man is 18 years of age, and enlisted in Company G, 110th Infantry in 1917, going to Camp Hancock for training. He was later transferred to Camp Merritt, from where he accompanied his command to France. Before entering the army, he was employed by the Pennsy in the round house at Hollidaysburg. In the message, it was not stated as to what the nature of the wounds are and his many friends at the county capital will hope that he will speedily recover. 2. I know this is another off topic post from me, but I do need help here. Thanksgiving is at my house this year, and I am determined to serve this. I am looking for a recipe (I think from the 60's) that consisted of sliced grapes, walnuts, marshmallows, and I think whipped cream, maybe pineapple. Maybe it was Dream Whip and not whipped cream. I have done a search on Google, and found all kinds of grape recipes, but none matching what I remember. Carol found a recipe, but it didn't match. I do know there is no jello involved and other than that I don't remember much else. It was served cold. 1. PABlair Lingle
    2. I was just amazed when I first read this, then when I reread, I couldn't believe all these details were in the newspaper. Also, as a proud and loving mama to two dogs and a cat, my pets seem a bit more dangerous than I thought they were. Altoona Mirror, 1930, April 16 (the first of three articles) AGED MAN EATEN BY DOGS AND CATS Bones are found inside and outside shack in which Lincoln Lincle* resided alone at Fuoss' Mills How Lincoln Lincle, aged 65 and residing alone in a shack at Fuoss' Mills, near Tyrone, came to his death, will likely remain a mystery, as there is nothing left but the head and bones to tell the story, and dogs and cats, that evidently consumed the remains, can't talk. Shortly before noon today, a Mrs. Laird, accompanied by her nephew, Mr. Patterson, went past the shack occupied by Lincle and found some bones about the place that attracted their attention. They decided that they were human bones, and decided to investigate. Samuel Hoffman appeared about that time and entrance was forced into the shack and there, under the table, was the head of Lincle and other bones scattered about the floor, indicating that Lincle had been dead for possibly two weeks and that the dogs and cats had eaten all the flesh. Coroner Chester C. Rothrock was notified and went to Tyrone this afternoon and in company with R. B. Robinison, justice of the peace of Tyrone, proceeded to Fuoss' Mills to conduct an investigation. Lincle was aged about 60 years and resided alone and but little is known about him. He was seen in Tyrone several weeks ago, but no one recalls having seen him about the place the last two weeks. It is supposed that he either died from natural causes and was then devoured by the dogs and cats, or else was attacked by the dogs and killed and eaten. That, however, will likely remain a mystery. *Lincle is spelled Lingle in following articles, and there is a small notice of family in the final article. A. Link Lingle was a native of Ranettsburg, Franklin county, and was a son of Thomas and Nancy Lingle, both deceased. He leaves four sisters and one brother as follows: Mrs. Nannie Laird, wife of George Laird, of Foss's' Mills, Mrs. Hamer of Tyrone, Mrs. Annie Peterson of Johnstown, Mrs. Catherine Dale of Somerset county and Andrew Curtin Lingle of Florida.
