Deb, You know I'd be happy to include your obits on Blair Archives, but they have to be transcriptions. Unfortunately, we Archives folks can't upload obit scans. Scanned images are not "searchable" and they take up, in great numbers, enormous amounts of server space. The Blair County RootsWeb message board does allow the upload of jpg scans. I know of several folks who automatically transcribe each obit and include the image as an attachment, on the RootsWeb board. The url is http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.blair/mb.ashx For what you are proposing to do, I think the message board would be the best approach. Perhaps you could add a note saying each one has been posted in her memory? This is a great idea you've come up with, and a really fitting tribute to a woman who worked for so many years to make data available to all of us. I'm still trying to cope with believing this has really happened. Annie was so "alive." First, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to Annie's family. I can't begin to tell anyone how many obituaries I received from Annie over the years, since all of my family members are central to Blair and Huntingdon counties. I was just shocked to hear of her passing. I hope it is a comfort to her family to know how many of us she touched over the years and what an impact Annie made in the geneaological world. Second, are all of those obits Annie scanned for all of us recorded anywhere for future researchers? I personally have every obit she ever sent recorded electronically in the jpeg format she sent them in. Is there a place on one of the sites where I can submit them for posting so that Annie's hardwork will continue to help others? If we all submitted the obits that we have saved from her, we could come up with quite a database of names that will help others. If anyone has more information about Rootsweb and sites like that and can help me out with what to do, I'll be more than willing to zing off my probably 400+ Annie Whiteman scanned obits. Third, I know from recent correspondence with Annie that she had more obits to share with all of us that were already scanned and on disks. She also had hard copies that needed to be scanned. If her family would so desire, I know for one that I would be willing to continue her tradition. Every once in awhile we're reminded That our life is so short on this earth Some seem to leave us so sudden Without getting their money's worth. We grieve our loss in rivers of tears Knowing we've lost someone dear One who can never be replaced In all of our living years. Annie gave all of herself to all What a legacy she's left behind I doubt we'll never find someone Who was so giving and so kind. There's another angel in heaven today Singing with all joy and glee Annie can now fill in the blanks On her elusive family tree. That long lost grandpa can now be found Old family stories are being shared There's a family reunion in heaven I'm sure Annie is glad to be there. Annie, thank you for all you've done. You've touched us all in your own special way.
I have been considering these things myself. First, I would like to extend my condolences to the family, and will personally, since I am local. Second, I am willing to setup a memorial fund. If others are interested, I can go ahead with it. What the fund would do is (with permission from the family, of course) take all of the obits she had collected (they are saved on floppy disk). These would be placed online, with a searchable database. The memorial fund would be used to cover expenses associated with the web server. We could continue to send out the daily emails with new additions. I think this would be the best way we (as a list) can honor Annie's memory and keep the tradition alive. This is exactly what Annie would have liked to hear! She gave her effort and money, but most of all she volunteered the information--all the information she could possibly find. She sent me boxes and boxes of things that noone wanted, but were full of information. She wanted that shared with all of you. So, for ten years I have been entering Pennsylvania information, even though I live in Ohio. Like you, she found time and energy to look up things for my ancestors and would remember them and send me tidbits. The thing she would like most for us to do, I believe, is gather what we do have that is not recorded digitally on the internet and work on that, as a group, to share with the world. One time we talked about eternity and we decided that it was giving all of these people whose names we were entering immortality, in a way, when we entered their names for searching online. Who knows how long this information will live in cyberspace? We both believed in free genealogy and donated our time to a number of different sources--all of which she approved of and worked at: Rootsweb: this list is hosted by Rootsweb and they do not charge anything for the service. I believe all the entries are archived at Rootsweb, also. Annie was also a Co-Coordinator for the Blair County, Pa. GenWeb site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair/ I'm sure Steve Patz would appreciate listings of obits, if you submitted them to him. There are Archives at Rootsweb where many obituaries for Blair County are stored at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/blair/obits.htm I'm sure that Judy Banja, listmember, would be glad to help you post things there. GenExchange: this project is now defunct, but Annie was the state coordinator there and had entered nearly 100,000 records of all types for searching at the time of its demise. This is the project we first worked on together. PA-Roots: this project is the one I am most heavily involved in and it is a system that will search records throughout the entire state at one time, making it a very powerful search tool. Google also picks up our records and will include them on searches there. Blair County is here http://www.pa-roots.org/data/index.php?129 You can choose the OBITUARIES section and enter your obituaries yourself, one at a time, making them searchable to the entire community. I would be more than happy to show you how to do this. It takes only one try to see how simple it is. Or, I have a team of volunteers (passing it forward!) that help enter records and we would be happy to enter the obituaries for you there. We would even add Annie's name to the records, if you like. Keep in mind a couple of things...obituaries are copyrighted, so if they are "newer" (within the last 70 years or so), they cannot be entered verbatim online without permission of the newspaper. What I do with these is abstract them down to just bare facts. Carol C. Eddleman Bedford PAGenWeb http://www.pa-roots.com/~bedford/ Director, Data Acquisition, PA-Roots http://www.pa-roots.org/data/

I was so sorry to hear about Annie's death. She has helped me a lot over the years. I looked forward to the obits and the children's Christmas letters to Santa that she sent. Through personal e-mails I found out that her best friend Helen Radel was my cousin. Small world. She will be greatly missed. My sympathy to the family. Maxine
To Annie Whiteman's family and close friends: I never knew Annie in person, but I felt in some way I did when she made me smile when she brought me closer to my ancestors through many of her generous contributions. Be comforted to know that Annie has and will continue to place smiles on the faces of genealogy researchers all across the world. Like an eternal flame, Annie’s selfless contributions in a very special and honorable way are a perpetual memorial to her own legacy. I was very saddened by the news of Annie's passing. Annie was one of the most generous people I know with her dedication to posting her obituary list to the Blair listing. I can't count the many, many obits she sent me to help in my research. She recently sent me a photo of her, her grandson, and her husband with a note saying how proud she was of her grandson and his plans of college. Annie had a wonderful wit about her and made me smile when she wrote about her problems with her computer. She also made me smile with her Santa letters. My prayers and sympathy go out to her family, her friends, and all of her cyber acquaintances. We will all miss her so much on this list. I, too, will volunteer to post her obits, and will be willing to not just list them, but to transcribe them as needed. I didn't know Annie personally, but she was a wonderful and generous person. She gave so much to many many genealogical families. Please add my condolences to Annie's family. I am so very sorry to hear the news concerning Annie. Please share my sympathy with her family. She was such a warm and wonderful person. She has sent a number of obits to me over the years and many times we exchange some bits of personal information or just the weather. She was very proud of her grandson and his choice of schools. I also have a son who is a senior, who has not yet made his choice. Please take care, Pattie Knoxville, TN > I plan to copy off all these kind words and send then to Annie's > husband and > family. Dear Carol, I am just deeply saddened. This is the Annie that I just provided a recipe to for Ambrosia for her Thanksgiving Dinner? I never met Annie, but had several "off line" conversations with and she even emailed me a picture of herself. Her posts were always so enlightening......oh my, I will miss her so much. Had Annie been ill? She seemed so full of life and had such terrific wit!! Is there any way we can send condolences to her family? A condolence website or a mailing address? This is heart-wrenching news. I never met Annie but like so many on this list, I felt I knew her through her boundless acts of generosity towards all of us. Which, when you think of it, is a beautiful way to know someone. Carol, I hope you will convey to Annie's family the sympathies that so many people are expressing, and make sure they know how much Annie's "list family" will miss her, too. How can Annie be gone from us? Just earlier this week, she made me smile as I thought of how thoughtful she was to post letters from Santa circa 1920's. In a world where consumerism many times overruns the true meaning of this time of year, reading a child's wish for oranges and nuts from 70-years back helped put things back into perspective. I had a list to do as long as my arm and was quickly losing perspective. How did she know I needed to read those? In addition to all of the genealogical help she provided to so many of us, Annie was a friend, the electronic pen pals of recipes, grandson stories, and all sorts of other day-to-day. Her Bombeck-type wit made me chuckle on more than one occasion. There was only one Annie. I can't say anything others haven't already said. But like the rest, I am richer for having known her, even though it was through this electronic medium. For the loved ones Annie leaves behind, please know you are enveloped by the prayers of so many on this list. I was so shocked to read of Annie's passing. I still can't believe it. Annie was such a help to me with my lines in Blair county and I so enjoyed are personal emails off list. We shared Pumpkin recipes a month ago and she and her husband made them and loved them. Apparently I supplied the recipe for the "Ambrosia" salad she was looking for, so in her memory I am posting it to the list. We always called it Marshmellow Salad and my mom still makes it every Thanksgiving and every Christmas. This is what was written down about 47 years ago when my grandmother made as there really wasn't a "recipe" when she made it. Will bring tears to my eyes when I eat it this Christmas. Here it is -- I'd like to call it "Annie's Salad" from now on if that's OK -- 16 oz pkg. of mini marshmallows Large bunch of red seedless grapes 1 can (20oz) can of crushed pineapple drained (make sure you drain it well or you'll have soup) 1/2 pint lite (coffee) cream Mix well let set covered overnight in the fridge Next day right before serving, whip till very stiff peaks form 1/2 pint of heavy whipping cream and fold into the marshmallow mixture. Add sliced bananas (don't put in green ones and don't put in super ripe ones) About three to five -- whatever you want. You can add slivered almonds or walnuts if you want, but we never did. It is very good and any time it is made and taken to a party the bowl is empty! IF you decide that you don't want to serve all of it at once, mix all but the bananas, take out what you want and add the bananas. Just add fresh bananas to the rest of it until it is gone. IF you put all the bananas in at once and it doesn't get eaten they get ugly brown. Basically the grapes are for color, so no "set" amount of them. Grandma always said, "enough grapes". ;) I hope many will make Annie's Salad for Christmas this year or a New Year's party and remember Annie when you enjoy it.
