    3. Both Legs Cut Off. James Harlan is about seventeen years of age, and his home is on a farm in the vicinity of Newry. At present writing he is lying at the West Penn hospital, Pittsburgh, with both legs cut off and a strong chance that he will not live. On Wednesday evening James attempted to jump on a moving freight train on the Panhandle railroad, near the foot of the Monongahela inclined plane, that city, but missing his hold he fell to the track, and both legs were crushed under the wheels. The surgeon who was called upon to attend him found that amputation of them was necessary, and the operation was performed, after which the sufferer was removed to the hospital. It is stated the young man has been cultivating dime-novel literature for some time past, and got an idea that he should seek adventure in the far West, shooting buffalo, elk and so on, and killing an Indian occasionally by way of variety. He bumped his way through on Tuesday last, and was on his way toward the land of the setting sun when the terrible accident happened. In his pocket was found a small Smith & Wesson revolver, and he had about twenty dollars in money in his pocketbook. Word was telegraphed to his parents of the sad mishap which he met with. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Friday, April 2, 1880 1880 Freedom Township, Blair County census - Rebecca Harlin, 55 James Harlin, 18, laborer, both legs cut off Joseph A. Harlin, 12 Frazier Harlin, 31 ADVENTUROUS HOLLIDAYSBURG YOUTH. Mr. Joe Condron, a Hollidaysburg boy, has seen more of the Far West during the past two years than falls to the lot of most adventurous travelers in a lifetime, having traveled in that short time through all the Territories, mostly by mules and wagon. On March 17 he writes from Bloody Tank, Arizona, a place he says that got its name from a recent fight between the Apaches and Maricapo Indians. There were so many Indians killed that the water tanks from which water is obtained was bloody for a month after this slaughter. During his wanderings he has tried many trades, but is at present engaged in packing flour with ponies over the Pinal mountains, from Bloody Tank to the Silver King mines. The pack train consists of fifteen Mexican horses. He recounts some of his adventures amongst the Indians and Mexican greasers that would satisfy most of our boys who read dime novels, and sigh for a life in the far west. On a recent trip over the Pinal range he met six armed Indians. Being all alone, he says his scalp appeared to raise without assistance from his savage visitors, but soon realizing his danger assumed a brave, determined and careless manner, and they presuming he carried a pair of seven shooters with him and knew how to use them, did not make an attack. On another trip one of his horses went over a precipice, pack and all. He says the trail is so narrow and dangerous that but few persons, other than those who are accustomed to frontier life, would venture over it. The greatest luxury to be found in Arizona is the genial climate. And the most bountiful is the rich silver mines. All else is but shifting sand. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Friday, April 2, 1880

    3. In the Long Ago. Fifty-eight years ago seems a long time to look back in the history of Blair county, but there is a man residing in the city who at that time carried the mail through this neighborhood. His name is E. M. Bigham, and his route in 1822 was from the foot of Blair's Gap to Bellefonte, a distance of about fifty miles. The journey was performed on horseback once a week, and required four days' time. The postoffice in this vicinity was at Mudtown,* it having but a short time previously been established there, and Robert McNamara appointed postmaster. Mr. Bigham says that the ground where Altoona now stands was all a howling wilderness, and rarely traveled except by the hunters. The mail consisted of about one hundred letters. Going through the wild woods was not such a tame proceeding at all times. One day in crossing out of the valley near here the postal carrier was ordered to halt by a mail robber. As he had but two or three letters he quietly stopped, when the thief took off the saddle bags and was about to open them just as a hunter with rifle in hand hove in sight. The bold highwayman dropped everything and fled on very short notice. For all these risks the mail carrier received just four dollars and fifty cents per month. He says he remembers seeing Lewis** and Conly shortly after they were captured. Both were desperately wounded at the time and died of their injuries. He resides in Altoona and has made it his home for twenty years, and many an interesting tale can he tell of the rough ways and generous hospitality of the first settlers. 3. eBay auction for this bible closes tomorrow afternoon, 12/10/2009. I think we once owned a Rambler my dad bought from Mierley Motors on Union Avenue. *smile* Judy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joanne Morgan" <jomorgan@swbell.net> To: <PAHUNTIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, December 07, 2009 6:31 AM Subject: [PAHUNTIN] MIRELY, MIERLEY, THOMPSON, BRENNAMAN, SPARR MIRELY, MIERLEY, THOMPSON, BRENNAMAN, SPARR Today’s date is December 7,. 2009. There is a family bible on sale at Ebay and the auction ends today. The name of the family that owned the bible is Mirely. Unfortunately there is no rootsweb list for that surname. There are obituaries shown in the advertisement and when this bible sells (for 99c at this time) those obits will be lost forever, so I’ve subscribed to the 2 PA lists that are mentioned in these obits in the hopes that someone out there will see these and need them. I’m not related to this family in any way. I do not have this bible and do not know who will eventually end up with it. I can only transcribe what I see. Unfortunately, there is no date on this piece of newspaper, so I don’t know when he was born or died. FRANK MIRELY died at his home in Williamsburg Friday after a few days’ illness. The deceased was a son of George and Sarah Mirely and was born in Huntington County 55 years ago. He had been married twice and is survived by a wife and several sons and daughters. Mr. Mirely had been a farmer all his life. He recently had been employed by J. F. Brennaman on the Christian Sparr farm. After a short service at the home yesterday morning, the remains were taken to Mapleton, and from there, taken overland to Calvin for interment. THIS NEWSPAPER HAS 1889 WRITTEN ON IT IN PENCIL. A DEATH IN CASS (OR CASE) TOWNSHIP A correspondent furnishes us with the following: Mrs. ANNIE B., wife of B. FRANK MIERLEY died at her home in Cass township on the 2d instant after a lingering illness. She was aged 33 years 2 months and 18 days. Deceased was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. DAVID THOMPSON of Martinsburg, W. VA. And during the last 3 months of her illness, the latter was her constant companion and attended to all her wants. A husband and five small children are the bereaved survivors of a kind wife and mother, and to them the sympathy of the whole community is extended. The remains were interred in the Baptist Cemetery in Cass Township on Monday. On the DEATHS page of this old bible are these names and dates, as best I can read them: ANNIE B. 1. [PABLAIR] orphaned baby
    2. Judy Banja
    3. I looked through the next couple of issues and didn't see a follow-up, which surprised me. The last one of these baby-on-the-doorstep stories I read had a follow-up that gave the name of the family adopting the baby, and gave the baby's new name. The one I read earlier followed a similar story pattern complete with the glimpse of the man thought to have left the baby. I don't see an infant Brothers in the 1880 Altoona census. If I find another article, I'll post it to the list. Judy A Deserted and Exposed Infant. When Mrs. Ruth Brothers, residing at the corner of Twenty-first street and Thirteenth avenue, went to her front door on Friday evening last she was surprised to see two dirty-looking bundles lying on the mat which is kept on the porch. She very naturally took up the bundles, carried them into the house and investigated their contents. What was her surprise on examining the larger one to find that it contained a real, live, smiling, female infant, which, when subjected to a much-needed bath, proved to be very pretty. When Mrs. Brothers recovered from the first feelings of astonishment, which had well nigh overcome her, she proceeded to look into the second and smaller package. Its contents consisted of some necessary articles of baby's apparel and the following note, written in a legible and regular hand, evidently that of a woman. Fair Lady: Circumstances now compel me to give up what is dearer than life, and what is part of myself. Oh, God! Why was it thus? Left homeless and without a friend on earth, and then to bring this little one into sin and misery! You are a stranger, but I was advised to leave her with you, and oh! For God's sake and a mother's feelings keep her, cherish her as your own, and guide her in the path of life, and if you are a mother imagine giving up one of your own lambs and leaving it miles and miles from where your future abode may be. Oh, kind lady! Listen to and think of this, and keep her and never let it be known but what you are the one who gave her birth, and keep her name unspotted. My heart is too full to write. She has no name, and was born January 25, 1880. I leave for parts unknown. May God bless you and yours and guide her is the earnest prayer of A MOTHER. It was soon noised abroad that Mrs. Brothers had found a baby, and the neighborhood flocked in to see the curious prize. Some furnished additional clothing, another a cradle, and others gave many different articles suited to the necessities of infancy. Who left the child, how it was done and to whom she belongs are questions that could not be solved, and will, perhaps, remain forever mysteries. The only clue to the affair, and that is an exceedingly faint one, is that as Mrs. Brothers opened her door, she distinguished the form of a man disappearing over the brow of the hill toward the city. Whoever did the deed, however, must have known into what sort of hands the infant was being committed, for no more kind-hearted person could have been selected. Mrs. Brothers states that unless some person who desires to adopt the child takes it very soon, she will not part with it under any consideration. 3. HOLLIDAYSBURG HAPPENINGS. ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF WINCHESTER. On the 22d day of March, 1862, just eighteen years ago, the battle of Winchester was fought. Out of two hundred and sixty of the old 84th, who went into battle, twenty-three were killed and sixty-seven wounded. Colonel Wm. G. Murray, Captain Patrick Gallagher, Lieutenant Charles Reem, privates Paul M. Long, Job Miller, Wm. C. Hileman and Thomas Ravenhill were numbered among the killed. James Barr?, C. D. Bowers, David S. Lane were on the list of the wounded. The day before the brave old General Shields was again wounded, struck by a fragment of shell and disabled. On the morning of the 23d, the rebels made the attack, after having, under cover of a wooded eminence, gained a strong position upon the flank behind rock and a stone wall. This position the Eighty-fourth was ordered to charge, and moved gallantly forward, and as it gained the wooded eminence, the rebel infantry from behind the rocks and fences poured upon it a terrible volley. Colonel Murray's horse was struck, when he dismounted and advanced on foot. A moment later, while at the head of his men, he was struck in the forehead by a minne [sic] ball and instantly killed. A general advance was then ordered along the entire line, and the rebels driven in utter route, losing three hundred prisoners, two guns, four caisons and one thousand stand of small arms. The anniversary of this battle brings to our town more sad remembrances than any other battle fought during the rebellion. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Wednesday, March 24, 1880

    1. [PABLAIR] Joseph Canan, Veteran of Two Wars
    2. Judy Banja
    3. A Veteran of Two Wars. Mr. Joseph Canan, of the freight shops, paid us a visit the other evening, and has a martial history that has few equals. He was a private in the Second United States Infantry during the Mexican war, being then no 17 years old, and participated in the capture of Vera Cruz, the battle of Cerro Gordo, Contreras and Molino del Rey, the storming of Chapultepec and the taking of the City of Mexico. While many of his comrades fell around him he providentially escaped without a scratch. He recalls vividly the scenes through which he passed and describes them with thrilling interest. Mr. Canan went through the war of the rebellion in the Union army with the same good fortune, and though not yet fifty years old, looks as if he could swing a musket or saber with as much vigor as when he first enlisted, and stand another campaign with as much zest as those through which he has so honorably passed. In the three months' campaign, Mr. Canan and the writer served in the same company under the lamented Captain Wayne, and Joseph and his captain were about the best drilled men in the Third Regiment by reason of their service in the regular army. Mr. Canan thinks the government should pension the Mexican veterans, inasmuch as he draws no pension for his last services. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Thursday, February 26, 1880

    1. [PABLAIR] Mathias Glass

    3. MARTINSBURG MATTERS. A REMARKABLE OLD CITIZEN. Your correspondent was surprised to see an old gentleman yesterday reading a newspaper without the aid of spectacles. On inquiry it was found that his name is Mathias Glass, an old citizen of the Cove, and his age is 83 years. He was born in Frederick county, Maryland, and is the seventh son of a seventh son. He, with his parents, came to the Cove in 1805, and he has resided here ever since. He never has used spectacles, and is able to walk from Henrietta (his present home) to this place, a distance of at least four miles, in one hour and a quarter. The family of which Mr. Glass is the last representative was a long-lived one, his father being nearly 96 years old at his death and his mother 88. One of his six brothers was 86, and the other five lived to ages ranging from 80 to 90 years. Mr. Glass is active, intelligent and a great lover of music. He sings either bass or tenor very well, and is never happier than when he can join in singing some of the hymns with which he is familiar. His memory as to dates and occurrences of "ye olden time" is good, dating back to the time when Martinsburg consisted of one dwelling house surrounded by dense forests. The old gentleman has been reading about the census which is about to be taken, and judging from my inquiries that I was the enumerator, answered all questions promptly. One of the "unterrified" at my shoulder desires me to add "that Mr. Glass has been a simon-pure Democrat all his life, which accounts for his good old age." KEISTER - ANOTHER SAD ACCIDENT - On Sunday afternoon, about three o'clock, as the limited mail west, engine 27, was running at schedule time, near Warrier Ridge Water station, a rock, probably weighing a hundred pounds, was discovered on the track, the engineer, John Keister reversed the engine, but it was to late to stop. The engine became detached from the train, ran along on the track a short distance, where it encountered a switch and ran on the other track, and over the embankment. Mr. Keister when he saw the engine was about to go over, attempted to jump, but in doing so, he was caught between the tank and the engine, and crashed so badly that he died in about twenty minutes. Engineer Drake, of engine 530, was on with him and went to the bottom but was not hurt. The fireman, Mr. Kauffman, was thrown into the tank, but escaped with only a few bruises. None of the passengers were injured. Mr. Keister resided in Harrisburg and leaves a widow, who is the daughter of Hon. S.R. McCune of Frankstown tp., and several children.
