    1. [PABERKS] TAX ROLLS
    2. Bob
    3. I am working on my Berks and Cumberland lines. To sort these out it would be extremely helpful to know when and how the tax rolls were made up and how the process worked. While my interest is in the 1760's, all I have found with any dates or procedures are some 1770's Bedford County tax records, it appears that a list of names of all males and and taxes due was made up about the first of the year (probably from the prior roll) and then the Collector was sent out with a copy and instructions to notify each person listed of how much they had been assessed and where and when they could appeal this assessment and to return with any additions by the date of the appeal. The appeals date seems to be before spring planting and, presumably the payment date would have been after the harvest in the fall. Most folks are delighted just to find an ancestor on a list, but I need to understand how all this was done to tell if the name is really mine. Thanks, Bob
