I live in Utah and twice have been back to Berks County to visit spots where my ancestors lived and are now resting in peace, including Aulenbach Cemetery. Most of you have probably already heard of this .... this is a tragedy that really makes me mad and upset. Many of my ancestors are buried here and the thought that someone would do a dastardly act like this is just sickening... http://www.wfmz.com/news/news-regional-berks/Number-of-tombstones-toppled-in-Aulenbach-Cemetery-triples-outrage-grows/-/121418/17918314/-/lcf0tq/-/index.html
There is no acceptable reason or excuse for cemetery vandalism. I have Berks Co ancestors on my mother's side going back before the Revolutionary War. Our ancestors fought to make this country free, even for those who exercise poor judgement, and i hope those responsible understand that. Frank T. I am deeply saddened by what happened at Aulenbach. I live in Ohio and we had a bad wind storm last spring and a cemetery with many trees was badly hit and many trees lost large limbs which destroyed a lot of tombstones as well. So nature can destroy as well as man. Anyway one thing I am doing is I am photographing an entire cemetery, and putting the photos on FindAGrave.com. Perhaps some of you could help, by spending a spare hour in a cemetery and photographing part of it and uploading the photos on Find A Grave. I have found some of my ancestors burial places from Find A Grave. There are people around the country and internationally who would benefit from this. I have received 2 international thank yous, for my effort. I have photographed almost all of Good Shepherd I may have missed some plus they are adding regularly. I currently have most of the back sections of Alsace Cemetery photographed. I am currently putting on the last section in the back. I still have to photograph the old section beside Grace Alsace Church. I will do this probably in March on my next visit. Michelle in Ohio
Hi list, This is dastardly and sickening. I do not know if I have any family or ancestry in this cemetery, but I do in other cemeteries in Berks County. I have seen how some cemeteries have been treated by vandels. I have also seen how property owners plow up burial areas or put roads on top of old burial sites. Most of which was not removed to a new site especially if family does not have the money or know about it. Some of my ancestry I will never know because of that. Some cemeteries I cannot get to on private property and all grown over. It is a shame that we have any of these problem. The only thing is helping the volunteers or donating money for your own buried family or just making a donation to help. I hope the 300 tombstones can be repaired. Also, do you think someone knew about the gifts at the church, since that is what was stollen? Thanks for letting us know. ----- Original Message ----- From: "RAY FRIESS" <rayfrijr@msn.com> To: <paberks@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, December 28, 2012 9:20 PM Subject: Re: [PABERKS] Terrible act > I live in Utah and twice have been back to Berks County to visit spots > where my ancestors lived and are now resting in peace, including Aulenbach > Cemetery. Unfortunately this thing is quite common as the country becomes more divided and the lack of respect for others outside their group declines, It will become the more prevalent in the future as more and more people have no idea who there fathers, let alone forefathers, were Guns get blamed in shootings because the liberals say teaching the Ten Commandments with "Thou shall not kill" violate the separation of Church and State.
