I don't know where in PA he was born but family tradition says his father's name was Jacob, b. abt 1740 in Germany, emigrated from Germany 1754 to 1760. Jacob Henry said he was "orphaned and raised by family friends." He (Jacob Henry) always went by "Henry" and was a fifer in the PA 5th Line in the Revolutionary War and that army was recruited from the Chester, Phil., Montgomery, Bucks, etc. area. I know in Berks Co there was a John Jacob Shutt or Schott (several more variations in spelling) who went by "Jacob" and died 1777. I have been to the library of Tulpehocken Settlement Historical Society in Womelsdorf Berks Co and seen the information there and it led me to think that this John Jacob Shott/Shutt could be the father or grandfather of my Jacob Henry Shutt. I have also read Joseph W Schott's book "John Jacob Schott of Tulpehocken," which speculates only 2 known sons of John Jacob: George Jacob (b. Nov 6, 1758) and John Wendel , (b. Jan 17, 1760). I (and others) have speculated more children, based on church records and other bits and pieces I've put together: They are: Catherine Fredricka, . May 8, 1745 (m. Valentine Emmerick, perhaps in Germany 1765) and Maria Louisa, b. abt 1750 (m. John Kobel) and Johann Peter (one source lists him as b. Sep 4 1754, Marion Twp, Berks Co, Pennsylvania. If correct he was born the same year I think the family emigrated from Germany). This would make a total of 5 children and my Jacob Henry (if he was a son of John Jacob) would be the 6th. I have also received the estate papers of when John Jacob died intestate in 1777 - all was left to his wife Marie Margaret [Kuntz]. I have also copied a note from an index done by a former librarian at the Berks Historical Soc. that shows the estate finally settled in 178? after one son (I think Peter), who was taken prisoner during the revolutionary war, was presumed dead since he never returned. The library was closing so I was very rushed and need to go back there some day to spend more time on this info because I have never been able to find state records on such a settlement after the 1777 papers reported it was turned over to the Orphans Court. Wendel was evidently the only son who stayed in Berks Co and can be found in various records there after the revolution. I have found only one record for Geo. Jacob when he sponsors Vallender Emrich's son in 1773 Tulpehocken Church Records. And for Johann Peter, I find only that former Librarians hand written index which I need to go back and double check. Our Jacob Henry left PA sometime after he was recorded in the rev. army (after 1777) and is next seen married to Elizabeth Groves of MD in NC. He farms in NC in the 1780s and 1790s and moves on to KY in 1810. In 1829 he moved on to IL where he lived out his life and died in 1852. My question is does anyone have any information on the Shutts of Berks Co that might fit into this picture of our Jacob Henry? Do you know what happened to either Johann Peter or George Jacob? Were there any other children of John Jacob? One source says John Jacob was b. May 30 1718. If this is true, he could easily have had several children born in Germany prior to when he immigrated in 1754. Records show that Catherine Fredricka fits that profile - were there others - perhaps a son, Jacob, born in 1740 in Germany who would fit what is known about Jacob Henry's father? Any information would be appreciated. Carol Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
