No, only those children who stood to inherit money or property. They are great records though. I had ancestors who were to inherit from their grandmother even though their mother was dead but the father survived. Great genealogical information there ! Children over 14 were allowed to select their own guardian. Would the Orphan Court Records list both of their parents even if one parent died a couple of years before the other? Would it list any information about the guardian, his parents, wife, etc. If so this will solve a big problem On 11/15/2010 9:01 PM, [email protected] wrote: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: jrbfamily > Surnames: > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.berks/10232.1.1.1/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > The Orphans Court was the court that registered wills and oversaw the distribution of estates, as well as ensured that minors and young women had a guardian to look after their interests. I don't know when those records started being kept -- the ones in Lancaster Co seem to be available at least from 1742, in Northampton Co at least from 1752 -- before then perhaps the records were just in the Miscellaneous books. Books of abstracts for Lancaster and Northampton have been done and can be purchased, but I don't know about Berks; you'd think someone might have done it for Berks.
