I like both Heritage Quest AND Ancestry.com. Currently, I do not have a subscription to Ancestry.com. Living in Minnesota, the Hennepin LIbrary does support Heritage Quest, so I have access to Heritage Quest from my home. Heritage quest, like Ancestry, has the Census Records online. Heritage quest, has the Rev. War Pension records, and also has many Family History and Biographical books online too. Most of my Ancestors resided in Berks County. For my research, Heritage Quest, online Newspapers, and the Berks COunty Historical Society provide me with most of the information I need. I have used the Library edition of Ancestry.com to look at Census records, and for me, Heritage Quest's Census record access is both more convenient, and easier to use. If I did not have my family tree so complete already, I am sure that I would make more use of Ancestry.com. Perhaps someday in the future, when all German records are translated and online via Ancestry, I will choose to join Ancestry once more, but for now, Berks and Heritage Quest are what I need. Also, I am aware that Ancestry bought footnote, which has provided free access to the Pennsylvania (Rev War) Archives. I have most of those series on CD, but find that the search engine for footnote is easier to use. Heritage Quest does not have the Pennsylvania Archive series' online, and for a Pennsylvania Researcher like myself, this is a disadvantage. I have access to Heritage Quest through my local Cobb County library in Marietta, GA. I'm able to access it from home through Galileo with a password I get with my library card. http://www.galileo.usg.edu/welcome/?Welcome I like Heritage Quest search engine for US Census. It is different from Ancestry.com which is good for finding info. For example, I can search for all the (first name) Nancy's in the 1880 census in Pennsylvania. It will give a large number of hits and show them by county. I can then select Berks County and find out the misspelling of the family name like Knisely is spelled Knysly or Knisley. Also, like John just said and I'll footstomp, Heritage Quest has a book section where you can search by keyword like Berks County and find family genealogy and history of Berks County kinds of book. You might be lucky to find a biographical sketch of a family member in the books. Great resource and works well in combination with Ancestry.com to find family info.
