You can visit the Berks County board on the net at: http://berks.pa-roots.com/ where you can click on News Clippings in the left sidebar and on the next page, top line click on List of Newpapers published in Berks County. The Reading Eagle is only one of them, but it is also the only one still published. This is only a list of names, it is not searchable. To search the Reading Eagle go to the Google Newspaper Archives on line and use their advanced search at: http://news.google.com/archivesearch/advanced_search Type in your search terms and/or dates and then type Reading Eagle in the Return results written in box. It is a sensitive search engine, sometimes it finds what you are looking for and sometimes it doesn't. It has it's quirks, keep trying and be creative. 3. The Reading Eagle is a great source of information. It starts about 1867 and goes forward. For the Civil War period use. http://digitalnewspapers.libraries.psu.edu/ One word of caution about the Reading Eagle. While the paper is all there, there are incidences where there are two day listed under one date, so the second date appears not to be there. So if you are looking for a specific date check the paper before and after the date of interest. Secondly; the Eagle's index is horrible. Some pages are rotated and not scanned by the OCR, others are just missed. As an example if you manually go into Reading Eagle for July 15, 1873 you will find the obituary for Ephraim Barlet. If you search on either of his names you will not find it. I have found numerous other examples of names being missed in by the search. Point: don't give up if the search does not turn up what you are looking for. Find a better date for the event and look at the paper page by page from the date of interest to several weeks afterward. While it takes time, you will enjoy reading the old articles. They had a different way of seeing the world, and the wording is so different than what you would see in a paper today.
