    1. [PABERKS] Ebner - Gehman marriage pre 1800
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: JosephAHittle Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.berks/10215/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In 1762 Johan and Margareta (Roehrig) Ebner (Ebener in some renditions) baptized their son, Lorenz, at Mertz Church in (then) Rockland Township, Berks County. In 1842 Lorenz Ebner died and is buried at Ben Salem Church in Carbon County, just east of the village of Andreas. His wife Salome is also buried at Ben Salem. Her tombstone state that she was born a Gehman. By 1804 Lorenz and Salome are found as communicants at Ben Salem. By 1806 their daughter Catharine is also receiving communion there. Catharine is my 3G-Grandmother. Since Lorenz does not show up in the 1793 Tax Lists for old Penn Township (Northampton County) but does show up there in the 1800 census, I'm guessing that he moved from Berks to (now) Carbon County between 1793 and 1800. Since Catharine received her first communion on record in 1806, I'm guessing that she was born before 1793. That leads me to believe that Lorenz and Salome were likely married in Berks County before moving to Carbon together as a family. However, I've yet to find any baptismal records for their children, and I also have not found any marriage record for them either. The Gehman family in Berks, as nearly as I can figure out, are early (and prominent) fixtures in the Mennonite movement there. It's also my understanding that Mennonites were Anabaptist by creed/tenet, and therefore did not baptize infants as did the Lutherans (as the Ebners were) or German Reformed. I don't know when Lorenz and Salome were married. I also do not know who Salome's parents were, but I'm guessing that they connect back to the Hereford Township Gehmans. It simply makes sense, as Mertz Church, as the township boundaries are today, isn't all that far out of Hereford Township (unless I'm completely mis-reading the maps I find). Any ideas as to where I could/should check? Joe Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
