Does anyone who has MSN mailbox have this problem? I just tried to send an email to the list and to Keith Nuttel, and it rejected to PA Berks but Keith's went thru. Yesterday Microsoft (MSN) updated, and I am thinking something is messed up between rootsweb and msn? This happened about 4 yrs ago after an update! Any advise? I will try the rootsweb help desk to see if anyone else has reported a problem. If anyone else has had this problem today, please email me if they solved it. 3. Diana, thanks so much for all the work you went to to share this Schaffer information re. two Anna Barbaras.  Right, my Anna Barbara Schaffer Brosius would not be the daughter of this Michael Schaffer.   But perhaps she is the Barbara daughter of Johannes Schaffer born at East Cocalico, Lancaster County.  I'll cross my fingers that other readers may be able to verify this or even venture some comments.  Thanks again.   Jerry  ________________________________ From: "gc-gateway@rootsweb.com" <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: PABERKS-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wed, January 2, 2013 4:41:24 AM Subject: Re: [PABERKS] Schaffer and endless variations This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Keith,  no I have no collateral line Schaffers (etc. spellings) in my database because of this question of needing to verify/be certain of the true parents of my Anna Barbara Schaffer Brosius (born ca. 1730).  I suppose if they can be documented, then we could determine a connection if any.  Thanks for replying.  Jerry Brosious ________________________________ From: keith nuttle <keith_nuttle@sbcglobal.net> To: paberks@rootsweb.com Sent: Wed, January 2, 2013 7:37:15 AM Subject: Re: [PABERKS] Schaffer and endless variations   While a slight shift in subject, I saw several things in your message that   caught my eye.   My 3rd great grandmother  Maria (Mary) Schaver (Schäffer)  She was born in   1795 and was married to Joshua (Joseph) Barlet on Jun 08, 1817  at Christ   Lutheran Church, Stouchsburg, Berks County, Pennsylvania.   Joshua Barlet b: Feb 03, 1795 d: Nov 21, 1869  and his wife are found in the   1830 and 1840 in Heidelberg  Twp and in the 1850 and 1860 census in Lower   Heidelberg  Twp.  They had 2 children that I have identified Johnathan   Barlett  b:1824  and Ephraim b:1826.  There are three other suspected   children; William Samuel and Levenia.  Joshua and Mary moved to what is now   Mulberry Street in Reading by 1869 and by 1870 they were living in the   Rickstown area of Reading where Joshua died.  He is buried at the St John   Hain  Church.  There  are several events for the family in the church   records.  Maria is found in the 1870 census in the 6th Ward Reading, but her   death date is unknown.  She was alive in 1873 living in Rickstown when her   son Ephraim died.   By chance Is this family in your database?   I have been working on this family for 10 years.  I first learned from the   census that Ephraim Barlet was my 2nd great grandfather and at first thought   at first his parents were Daniel and Eva Barlet.  I then found Ephraim   obituary which gave me Joseph and Mary Barlet as his parents.  It took me   some  years  to  associate Joseph Barlet with Joshua Barlet the son of   Sebastian Barlet.   Guns get blamed in shootings because the liberals say teaching the Ten   Commandments with "Thou shall not kill" violate the separation of Church and   State.   On 1/2/2013 5:39 AM, [1]gc-gateway@rootsweb.com wrote: This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Berks County was established (erected) in 1752 from parts of Lancaster, Philadelphia and Chester Counties. My point was addressed to someone who claimed that Johann Georg Ludwig settled in erks County prior to 1752. Any documentation prior to 1752, such as ships manifests that claim a Johann Georg Ludwig(ck) came from the Palatinate into Philadelphia, and states his final destination was Berks County is absolutely incorrect. It is not known whether the person who wrote that, incorrectly transcribed it from the original ships manifest after 1752, or if he was just illiterate and uneducated. 3. I too get frustrated by of people working in genealogy who have no clue as to the history. Examples are someone who had their family coming to America in the early 1800's on a "Cruise" ship. I believe if their ancestor knew what we consider a Cruise Ship they would have a different opinion. Another was a family that came to America in the same time period on a "Steamer". Steam did not come into use for ocean travel until many years later. However the area where a family lived is ever changing, and new areas are being created. West Virginia was created in during the Civil war. Arizona did not exist until the 1900's, but a lot of things occurred there prior to it becoming "Arizona". Sometimes the best way to describe where a family lived is to describe a territory by a later name. My ancestors came into the military district of Fort Wayne (The fort not the city). Allen County the location of Fort Wayne the city did not come into existence until 1824. It is easier to talk about them being in Allen Co, even though it did not exist, rather than saying they lived in the Military District of Fort Wayne which encompassed most of northern Indiana. Another area is Broome Co New York. My ancestors were in the area from about 1800 through the mid 1820's. It is easier to say they got married in Broome Co. rather than Tioga which is a significantly larger area. . While Chester Co had defined limits in 1851, the boundaries of Lancaster defined where it began, but the western end was not well defined and encompassed most of western Pennsylvania. Even to say they lived in Berks in 1852, does not say a lot, as it, like Lancaster, had its northern, eastern, and southern limits define but it stretch westward to an undefined border some where in western Pennsylvania. Family lore has one ancestor being born in "Lebanon" Pennsylvania. To the best of my research they never lived in Lebanon co or city, but lived in Reading and Philadelphia where their parents died. I believe the confusion comes from an old usage of geographic descriptions. Reading is what is called the Great Valley. It stretches from Georgia to New England. The area where Reading is located is in the portion called the Lebanon Valley. I suspect that some people of Philadelphia still refereed to that western region as the Lebanon Valley and over the generation the Valley got cut from where the boys were born. I don't know a solution to historical accuracy verse the need to know where your ancestors lived, but I think we have to cut some slack on this one Guns get blamed in shootings because the liberals say teaching the Ten Commandments with "Thou shall not kill" violate the separation of Church and State. 3. While a slight shift in subject, I saw several things in your message that caught my eye. This query regards my ancestor Anna Barbara Schaffer (born around 1730) who married Nicholas Brosius (Johan Nicolaus) "at Atalhoe" 14 April 1752. Around the time of the Revoltionary War Barbara and Nicholas settled in Northumberland County, PA. Countless Schaffer (and variations) as well as Brosius (wuth variations) lines "came to be" in Northumberland County, PA. BUT the point of this query is to ask for me, a signifcant question: Can anyone weigh in as to the identity of the parents of Anna Barbara Schaffer who married Nicholas Brosius (Brosious)? Over the course of decades (yes) I have seen a remarkable cast of candidates from internet postings for the parents of Anna Barbara Schaffer. Recently I made a list and I think I came up with around a half dozen couples who show as parents of this specific Barbara Schaffer who married Nicholas Brosius.! (Without checking I recall seing Adam, Caper, Johannes and others for her father). I would love to hear from anyone who believes she/he has good, solid, and ideally documented information for the true parents of Anna BARBARA Schaffer Brosious. Thanks so much in advance! 3. Hello Betty,   When I was looking up records for St. Henry's Cemetery in Moselem Springs at the Schwenkfelder Library, there was a record for the cemetery compiled in 1976 by Monseignor Charles Allwein of Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Bally. Father Allwein noted that he could not copy all the burials down because many stones were broken or too badly weather-worn to read or were buried in weeds and brush. Father Alwein noted that the cornerstone of St. Henry's Church was dated 1823 and when the Church was torn down the stones from the Church, including the cornerstone, were used in the wall of the cemetery. The cemetery is about 75 by 100 feet and can be approached from the road.   Father Allwein noted that his sources for the cemetery were Schuyler C. Brossman who copied tombstones Sept 28, 1975, also a project of Boy Scouts of Sacred Heart Church, Allentown, Nov 1, 1966, and Monseignor Leo G. Fink's book "Old Jesuit Trails in Penn's Forest."   My brother had gone to the cemetery maybe 10 years ago and it is the middle of a field and at that time was very overgrown, pretty much a jungle. He tried taking some pictures of the tombstones. He was able to photograph tombstones for Barbara Lovina Thompson, wife of Isaac Thompson; Solomon, son of Thomas and Maria Dum; Thomas, son of Jacob and Mariana? Dumm; Mary Elizabeth Dum, wife of Thomas; and Jacob Michael Dum, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Dum.     Christine Schultz --- On Mon, 12/31/12, Betty J. 3. Find a grave is a good source of cemetery information, but there are local sources that are as good or better. In Allen County Indiana the Mary Penrose Daughters of the American Revolutions has photographed most of the smaller cemeteries in Allen County, and are now working on the large cemeteries. These photos are all on line at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~inallcem/ The nice thing about this site is they start in the front corner and photograph every grave until they get to the back opposite corner. If there is a stone there is a picture, so if your ancestor is not there, the stone does not exist. Interestingly for one of my ancestors we were able to identify his stone in a photo of an unreadable stone. I had found the receipt for his tombstone is some very old papers I inherited. Based on the invoice and the photo we identified his stone. The DAR placed the invoice on their site along with the picture. I wonder how many 130 year old stones have been identified using the original purchase order?
