    1. [PABERKS] Zion Windsor Castle Cemetery Plot Map
    2. Walter G. Blenderman
    3. I added a plot map of Zion Windsor Castle Cemetery (now known as Zion United Church of Christ Cemetery) to findagrave: <http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=2330489&CScn=Zion&CScntry=4&CSst=40&CScnty=2246& > The plot section numbers can be found with persons interred there in LDS film #1433078, which contains the church history, and a section at the back that has headstone information, section information, plus the plot map. The film is missing pages 72-73 ( Jan 26, 1833- Mar 25, 1842 - baptisms, 1842 confirmations, and a few marriages) from the book. I have a copy of those 2 pages, which I got from the church, if anyone needs them. 1. [PABERKS] book by Joan R. Gunderson
    2. Betty J. Burdan
    3. Joyce, I searched for the book "An Injurious and Ill Judging World" and found that is actually the title of Chapter 7 in the book "To Be Useful to the World: Women in Revolutionary America" written by Joan R. Gunderson, published in 1996 and again by the University Press of NC in 2006 I downloaded the Kindle version of it this morning and found the mention of Elizabeth Bishop on image 1846 of 4580 of Chapter 7. I haven't a clue what page that might be. Anyway the discussion of the chapter was about crimes of Revoultionary period women. Under a section about child abuse it says..."Women had ample opportunity to abuse children, especially apprentices or servants. Whites could inflict high levels of violence against African American children and adults without facing legal charges. For example Elizabeth Bishop of Berks Co., PA never stood trial for killing her black female servant." It went on to say that laws about abusing your slaves were not written until 1774. I skimmed all the pages one by one until I found the mention of Elizabeth Bishop, and the few I stopped to read were extremely educational. I quit when I found the above passage, but it was near the end of Chapter 7 and Chapter 8 turned to a different subject. So I think this might be all there is. Now I wonder what it was that Joan R. Gunderson found and where...and I have to try to find the other book. Betty

    1. Re: [PABERKS] Susanna Christ sister of Geo Bishop of VA
    2. Joyce Diehl
    3. Betty, Yes, that is correct. Susanna Bishop Christ was my ancestor. She was the sister of the John Bishop [Jr] of whom you have inquired. She was married to Michael Christ. According to "Epitaphs" John Bishop Sr lived on Shelbourne Rd. near the junction of 422. The Bishop Cemetery is located behind the new health care facility, on the back bank slightly west of the power tower lines. John of Exeter died in 1754. John Jr petitioned the court on August 10, 1761 stating that his father , John, died intestate, owning 150 acres in Exeter (in the vicinity of Boscov's Department Store) and a house in Reading. John Sr's widow, Barbara, had by then remarried Ulrich Huy. The sons are John, Adam and George. The daughters are Mary, wife of John Groushore, Susanna, wife of Michael Krist and Elizabeth. The senior Bishop could not have been buried on what was known as the Bishop Cemetery (in Lynnstead east of Shelbourne), since the Bishop family did not own the property in 1754. Johannes Jr, March 4, 1740-August 31, 1812, married first Elisabeth who died about 1776. His second marriage was to Susanna Keim, December 3, 1753-October 21, 1823. John Jr became very successful owning hundreds of acres in Exeter Twp and thousands of acres in Virginia. [See attachment] I'm really not sure why this family had so much land in Virginia but lived in Berks County - although some of the family lived in Virginia. Most people who have Bishop lineages on Ancestry don't even list Elisabeth as the first wife of John Jr. I found this online: THE COURTS OF OYER AND TERMINER Court Papers, 1757-1761, 1763, 1765-1776, 1778-1782, 1786-1787. (7 boxes) Arranged alphabetically by name of county, and thereunder by court term and case number. These documents from the Oyer and Terminer Courts include case files, judicial administrative papers, and diverse records from the Mayor’s Court of Philadelphia; minutes from Nisi Prius courts of Northampton and York; and tavern license petitions from Philadelphia. Among those pertaining to African Americans are: • Berks County, 1772. Elizabeth Bishop, wife of John Bishop was charged with the murder of their slave Louis[e]. And this: CHAPTER IX: SKETCHES OF THE MEMBERS OF THE PENNSYLVANIA CONVENTION BY W. H. EGLE, M. D. BISHOP, JOHN, of Berks county, was born March 4, 1740, in Exeter township, that county, his father, John Bishop, coining to Pennsylvania with the Boones and Lincolns. He was brought up as a farmer, an occupation he was engaged in all his life, although other enterprises engrossed much of his attention. He had extensive business connections, and became an ironmaster. He was a large landholder, not only in Berks county, but in the Valley of Virginia. As a consequence, he was more or less prominent and influential in public affairs. During the Revolution he greatly aided the county lieutenants in organizing the Associators and militia, by advancing large sums of money in emergencies. He was elected to the General Assembly, serving from 1781 to 1784, and chosen a delegate to the Pennsylvania convention to ratify the federal constitution in 1787. He did not sign the ratification, and the year following was a member of the Harrisburg conference which protested so loudly against that instrument. He filled the office of county auditor in 1797-98, and represented Berks in the State legislature in 1805-06. He died at his residence in Exeter township the 3d of September, 1812, aged seventy-two years. I am sure that I have a note somewhere that John Bishop had purchased several slaves. If only I could put my finger on that! This is certainly intriguing - I suppose everyone was mum about it because John Bishop was a respected person. Perhaps Elizabeth took her own life???? 1. Re: [PABERKS] A Couple Reading Eagle Google Archive Tips
    2. Thank you Jim and all others for all the tips. This is a very helpful and friendly board! Bob Miller Houston In a message dated 2/13/2013 11:36:31 A.M. Central Standard Time, berksroots@gmail.com writes: The Reading Eagle editions on Google Archive are great resources' for genealogists. The site was much more useful when it was searchable by keyword, but it’s still useful to find obits. Knowing someone’s date of death is pretty much required to get into the right edition, unless you have time to look through every one. Saving what you find seems to be the biggest challenge for people. The only option is taking a screen shot of the article you want to save. For Vista and Win 7 users, the snipping tool available through your computer’s program list is a very simple option that works well. Just click and drag across the area you want to keep and then “Save as” a jpg wherever you want to keep it. I’ve used Printkey 2000 free version 5.10 on my old XP system with few problems. This version is no longer supported, but it is free. It freezes up sometimes, but restarting it usually gets you back in business. http://www.oldversion.com/windows/printkey-2000/ There is also a “Pro” version for $20. that is supposed to be more stable. Gadwin Print Screen is another good free option. http://download.cnet.com/Gadwin-PrintScreen/3000-2094_4-10123018.html?tag=mn col;5 Any of these will let you copy the whole screen or crop just the area you want to save. You can also do some editing, adding text or send the screenshot right to your printer. I usually zoom in on the article as much as possible to fill the available screen space first. I like to make the type large enough to read easily. I ’ve learned that it’s also wise to keep some record of the edition the article is in. What I do is position the article on the left side of the screen and move it up to where the Reading Eagle edition date shows. When I highlight what I want to snip, I include the Reading Eagle date just above the article I’m saving. That way, the date of the edition becomes part of the jpg file that I save. You can see an example of what I’m describing on this findagrave entry: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSmpid=47363538&GRid=935894 33& or http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSmpid=47363538&GRid=104885 424& The only problem that has come up is when the article is part of an edition that has been saved with the previous day or later day editions. Then it’ s usually only a day or two off. Another problem comes along when an article is found that is bigger than can be snipped in one piece. For me, it’s not a big problem for I just save the article in overlapping sections and join them together in Photoshop. This must be done with all snips being made at the same magnification. Another problem is that some pages are loaded horizontally. You just have to save them horizontally and rotate them in an image program to get them properly oriented. My biggest problem with this archive has to be that too many times, I go looking for a particular date only to find that the edition I need to see is not online! In some cases, a whole month’s worth of editions or more is missing. This happens entirely too often. I’m not sure if these editions were never scanned or if Google just never uploaded them. There is one Eagle article that someone copied for me from the Reading Eagle films available at the Albright College Library. I wanted to snip a copy online but the edition it came from is NOT on Google. Sooo, even if you can’t find the edition you need on Google, it MAY be available at the Library. I hope this info helps.
