While it is true that women gave up their names and it makes it difficult to find them in census and similar places, it in some ways makes it easier to find them. Many times in Wills you will find statements like daughter Jane intermarried with John. While the male heirs are just listed with no indication of the wife. If you check the court petitions and records. many times where there is a guardianship involved or similar situation, the husband will petition the court in the name of her son and his wife to sell a piece of property that was belonged to the first husband. Another place is deeds. I have found that contrary to popular opinion the wife had to sign off on sale of property held by he husband. I have seen this in both Pennsylvania and in Ohio in the mid 1800's. Many times paragraph at the end of a deed will give some clues to the wife's family. I found a deed in Ohio for property that John owned. It stated the date that John died. It then states that his wife currently married to Peter and their son Fred agreed to sell the property. You can not find better proof than that and in an official record. When I showed it to a real estate lawyer all he could do was shake his head and say that information would not be in a deed today Done give up on the maternal line because they change their name. > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: Kalza77 > Surnames: Hagenbuch, Stapleton > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.berks/10493.2.2/mb.ashx > pr > Message Board Post: > > Thank you for your input. It is definitely a mystery. It seems to be so much harder to find thorough records of matrilineal lines since women typically gave up their surnames & were often not included in legal or business transactions. Granted, much of what we are doing here is supposition, but I would like to have as much accuracy as possible or it is all a waste of time. Let's keep looking & pass on the info if anything reliable comes into view. Thanks again! > > Important Note: > The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The only thing I can add is that they were sponsors for at least two other births in the 1760's. Two Straub babies were sponsored by them. The babies mother was a Delong. I don't want to start a round of inaccurate info., but I have wondered if Barbara might have been a Delong. The Delong's hailed from New York, as did the Stapleton's. She did not come on the ship with Andreas, had not been born when he came to this country, and was a child at best when Tobias got married. There is no evidence who the Barbara was who married Tobias. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people jumping on the Hagenbuch bandwagon just because others have. (She didn't die in 1740, by the way. She and Tobias were still sponsoring babies baptisms in the 1760's. ) it's refreshing to run into people who can look at the info we have on Barabara and see it just doesn't add up, instead of buying everything they read on the net :0) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have hit the major brick wall and can't seem to go any further without some much needed info from Berks Co. I am in search of the marriage listing for a Jacob Burkert and a Maria _________. They would have married sometime around 1846-1849 in the area of Upper Heidelberg, Berks Co. PA. That is the location they show up at on the 1850 Census. Maria's son, Richard Shirley, is my line but I have been unable to find any Shirleys in that area at all so I'm not sure what her last name would have been at the time she married Jacob. I know on the 1860 Census Jacob and Maria are listed living in Womelsdorf. I cannot find them anymore after that. Richard Shirley married Catherine Yoder, who was from Wernersville. I do know that they had at least one child to pass away in Philadelphia and they had her body sent back to Wernersville. I also know that they had at least a couple of children baptized at the St. Johns (Hains) Reformed Church. Please, if anyone could help me find the marriage listing for Jacob Burkert and Maria I would be so deeply indebted to you! I have searched the internet to the point of no return without a bit of luck and I am hoping someone who is actually in the Upper Heidelsberg area could help me! Thank you so much in advance! I don't know if this will help but last night I was reviewing the Berks county Probate Court Index for the late 1700's and the first part of the 1800's. There were a lot of Sell listed in the probate court records for that period. As I remember some of these were for guardianship. These records are on Family Search. Contact me directly if you can not find them.
