What was their practiced religion? Whatever township they are in the 1850 census look for the churches around there and see if anything is still existing. You can write to them for records if they have them. Also because in 1850 I found another Shirley family a man with a wife a couple of children not much older than the Maria, then I found one more family (which I didn't send you that census) with a young girl about the age of 9 living with a family not the same surname. A theory that popped to mind was what if: Maria is a Shirley by birth and her parents died and she and the brother, raised all the young siblings as their own, including the 4 year old Richard Shirley who in 1850 was still listed as a Shirley. Because if she was remarried to the Jacob Burkert why not adopt the boy from the first marriage if he was her son? Instead if he was a Shirley then they would raise him as a son but keep his name for his own identity. Just a thought process I had. I still have to go back to ancestry.com and see what some of the book titles were. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am assuming that Richard's father died before 1849 since Maria is listed as married to Jacob Burkert and has a baby that is almost a year old in 1850. That is why I am hoping for a marriage certificate for Jacob and Maria, to try to figure out who she is. I am wondering who I contact to get a copy of the marriage...the county or the state since it would be a marriage around 1846-49? Would also be nice to find a Shirley marrying a Maria ______ in Berks Co also...should be around the 1844 to 1845 time frame. Thanks! If this were the case you may luck out and find guardianship paper work for the boy. This would be especially true if the wife and the boy inherited property from the husband/father. Additionally you may be able to find a deed for the property if it was sold. And if it was sold there may be some petitions to the court to sell the property, by the guardian. I had a similar situation with my Hindenlang family. I first found the guardianship bonds which gave the name of the father. From the petitions to sell the wife and her sons property I learned the mother's name, and finally in a deed were fours sentences that said the guardian's wife was the boys mother and had been previously married to the boys father. Many times when I am stuck, I can some times develop a lead on a genealogical dead end by doing a Google search. For your Shirley family, I would try searching no "shirley berk Pennsylvania", "shirley family berks 1700.1800", etc You can use wild cards like ? for one character or * for a string of characters and add and subtract terms to refine the search. You can also try other search sites like http://www.ask.com, or http://www.altavista.com/ Don't forget the book websites like Google Books., Archive.org, etc. there are many searchable web sites with full text searchable books. I did a brief scan and found NO Berkert, but plenty of surnames that could possibly be Jacob. Remember that surnames got listed according to what the writer/recorder of the information heard. Immediately, my mind went to Burkhart and Burkhardt. I personally found nine different spellings of my family's surname in the records. Good luck. Can anyone help or point me in the right direction? I hit my brick wall 10 years ago, I am looking for the Henry Meyer family and more importantly his father who came here from Germany "during the colonial days". Henry was born in Berks County 1784, so his father would have come to America prior to 1784. Henry and his offspring are listed in Maidencreek/Blandon area of Berks from 1820-1910 census, I have even found relatives through 1930 but I want to know who my proginator is. I do not know if he is the "lost Henry" from the Chris Meyer clan, though the birthdays are suspicious. My Henry is May 6, 1784, and the Chris Meyer's clan Henry was born March 9, 1784. And, as we all know, the beautiful scrolls and variation in handwritting back then is sometimes hard to discern. I do not have no proof that my Henry is lost Henry from the Chris Meyer Clan so I am still searching The family name is written in most census records as Moyer. In wills, church records, and cemetery stones the name is written Meyer. I located his marriage record in 1813 as Meier... I have a biography confirming I have the correct family. Henry was German, Lutheran, and married a Koller/Koehler, they bore 14 children whom 13 of them lived to be adults (per his will 1857). I have traced a few of the children moving Ohio, Illinois and Colorado, those offspring are spelled Meyer, Myer, Myers and Meyers in following census. Other names in my Tree from Henry's offsping: Dreiblebis/Treiblebis.. Fegley Renninger Strubble/Stroeble... Hicks Curry andBrown Tobias Motz/Moats... Fuchs/Fox I am grateful for any tip, suggestion, clue, H

HAACK(HACK,HAAK,HAWK) family descendants are seeking contacts with the subject family interests researching the following lines from Maxatawny Twp.: Daughters of Andreas and Anna Kunigunda HAACK: Barbara HAACK m. Theobald BAYER Justina HAACK m. Michael SCHAEFFER Susanna HAACK m. George WRIGHT Maria HAACK m. Jacob WETZEL Agnes HAACK m. Conrad MANESCHMIDT Anna Margaretha HAACK m. Jacob SCHARADIN Andreas HAACK and family appear to have arrived in Phila in Sept. 1738 aboard the ship Winter. He was 35 years of age. By 1749 he had obtained 225 acres of land in Maxatawny Twp. This land included three mills on the Saucony Creek, and was a portion of the location of the present day town of Bowers. The land was adjacent to the land of Peter LONG, the location of DeLongs Church. We are interested in learning if anyone has had any success in locating the area of Europe from which he came to America. Our searches in the works of Annette Burgert, Henry Jones, and the data base of Palatines to America have so far not been successful. The closest possibility has been the discovery of an Andreas HACK, born 30 April, 1703, to Hanss Wolffgang and Margareta Anna HACK, in Meimsheim, Wurttemburg, Germany. This is found in Family History Library film #118776, index no. C91748-1, p.487. There is a lot of info to share, too much to list here. I’d be grateful for any contacts to discuss it off list. It is definitely a mystery. It seems to be so much harder to find thorough records of matrilineal lines since women typically gave up their surnames & were often not included in legal or business transactions. Granted, much of what we are doing here is supposition, but I would like to have as much accuracy as possible or it is all a waste of time. Let's keep looking & pass on the info if anything reliable comes into view. Thanks again! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
