It's as simple as young Benjamin remained behind in Lancaster when the family moved to Reading. I found one Keenan obituary on the Berks Rootsweb site that relates to the Reading family. It would be for a daughter of Harry N. Kennan and his wife Laura (Goodman) who married in 1895. I think this Harry N. might be Harry the 6 year old son of James (counted in the 1880 census with "father" Benj. Keenan). Keenan, Bertha E. Bertha "Murph" Keenan, 93, Marysville, Wash., died April 27 in Las Orquidias Adult Care Home, Marysville. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Laura (Goodman) Keenan. Keenan served in the Army Air Forces and Air Force from 1943 until 1963, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. A flight nurse, she took part in the Korean Airlift. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Schaefer-Shipman Funeral Home Inc., Marysville, is in charge of arrangements. Source: Reading Eagle, Thursday, May 5, 2005. You might do well to contact the Reading library for look ups of the Keenans buried at Charles Evans Cemetery. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If I were you though, I would check the Orphan Court Records. If Benjamin's father died when he was a young boy, then someone would have to oversee his estate. Just a thought. I know a little about the other Benjamin. He was born about 1808 to a James & Mary, who lived in Chester Co, just over the county border. The absence of Benjamin inthe Kunen family in 1860 would account for him being in Lancaster at the time. And the way he spelled his name or the censutaker did, made it look similar to Benjamin Sr's. (Kenon vs Kunen). I'm complelled to believe that's the family he belongs with, both bcause of the names in family, his place in it, and his age in the censuses. I'll write those two census listings down and keep them or reference. Perhaps Benjamin's father never died and that he was simply snt here (Lancaster) to learn a trade. Like I said, there's a Benjamin Kenon found in Salisbury Twp, Lancaster Co in 1860. Blacksmith, living with James Hoas, also a blacksmith. So if he is the other Benjamin's son, and he's absent from the family in 1860, this would be why. But why Lancaster, I don't kn! ow, maybe it was the most industial place at the time nearest to Reading. I don't know. But thanks for the two lookups, Betty. I relly appreciate it. You got me thinking now. :-) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The census takers were notrious for making errors. The 1860 and 1870 census records for the family indicated they were born in PA. Regarding the "Unknown" on you birth of death certificate, it might be the person reporting the information did not know. I don't know of any Berks County birth certificates issued in 1837. Was the birth record you have written at some time other than when your Benjamin was actually born? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The last name culd have been misspelled and the mistake of thinking everyone on the page was German because I never saw a census page before where everyone was listed as being from one country other than this one. My Benjamin did have children, giving them names of those in that household (plus many more children). So I guess that could be his family, as long as the last name was misspelled and the error in thinking everyone was German. Then again, you can't mistake a language, if they spoke it or had an accent at all. Otheer than that, it could be his family. I'll definitely write down the family in the census and keep it for reference. My Benjamin would have been exactly 12 at the time, cause he turned 13 later that year in Dec.
