Rita et al According to Google, Switzerland dates from at least 1291. In the early 1800's it was conquered by France and left with an in-place government set up by France. Religious differences set Canton against Canton about 1839-48 and civil war broke out briefly in 1850. We've been talking about German families immigrating to Switzerland and then about 1852 immigrating to America. Perhaps social unrest there at that time was a motivating factor along with the attraction of America. Whenever there's a question about the history of some place in Europe, I try WIKIPEDIA, the free online encyclopedia -- it has the briefest, clearest information, plus sometimes maps and pictures. It comes in English as well as other languages. For info on East Prussia (in English), go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Prussia . If this site address doesn't work for you as a link (due to my software), copy and paste it into your web browser. JRB On Thursday, March 27, 2008, at 05:35 PM, James Stone wrote: > ... Germany didn't look like it did today in the mid 1800s. Has anyone checked to see if Switzerland was yet a separate country then? It is possible Switzerland was another one of those chunks of Germany that elected to be apart when the boundaries were established. There is a piece of "Germany" called "East Prussia" Based on OUR maps, it does not exist. Yet, as late as the 1960s it sure enough showed up on German maps. We simply call it part of Poland. A major town in East Prussia is Gedansk (SP?). Germany claimed it because it was settled by Germans, perhaps dislodging folks already there. Same with the Alsace-Lorraine country between Germany and France. That border has been 'contested' for hundreds if not thousands of years. A friend of mine claimed her relatives immigrated from Russia. Their surname couldn't be more German "Gotlieb" (I may have transposed the I and E like I frequently do in German). Yet they were 'Russian' because the town was in Russia at the time of immigration. For Europe, it is often best to know a town where someone was from...the national boundaries change frequently over the course of a few hundred years. I guess it's kinda like folks from "French West Africa." My Jacob Maury's tombstone says he was born in 1828 and died in 1903. I know tombstones can be very inaccurate. Census records from 1870 on say his parents were born in PA. The name varies in spelling to this very day. My Jacob's children were: Benjamin Franklin called Frank, David, Josiah, George, Jacob Jr., Emma or Emmaline, and Mary. Jacobs wife was Sarah A. ? (My father in law insists it was Haldeman but I can't prove it). Still I can't tell if there is a connection. I have the family posted all over the web but no one seems to know where Jacob came from nor who his parents were. If you would like a copy of my verified information, I can email it to you. They did settle in Lehigh Co., and he married a woman (Schlicher) from Allentown, then moved to Royersford, Montgomery Co. He changed the spelling to Mowrey, but on his tombstone is written Mawrey. I have often felt that this family had to have been connected to the early 1700s Maurer immigrants, otherwise, why would they pick Lehigh Co. to settle in?? They were in Macungie area. This Jacob Maurer was b. in 1810, and immigrated with a wife, two sons and a daughter. I have no idea who Jacob's father/mother were. They came from a town called Holzgenlinger (sp?) which was near Wuertemburg, Germany. If either of you may have a clue, I sure have an open mind.??? I guess it's kinda like folks from "French West Africa." When they immigrated in 1852 the name was spelled Maurer. My Zender ancestors were known by family to be German; however, research proved they lived in Einsladen, Switzerland for many years before emigrating to Seneca Co. Ohio. They later lived in Mercer Co. Ohio and were cabinet makers. They spoke German so everyone assumed they were German. Isn't research wonderful?
