My husband's ggrandmother from Alabama's name was Keziah and they called her Kizzy. Kezziah/Keziah was a very popular southern name. I don't think it would be a nickname for Catherine. More like Kate, Kitty, Kat, Kathie. Elaine

I know of two sons, Jacob and Abraham. Jacob had at least eleven kids, and Abraham had at least two. Jacob's family is of more obvious interest to me as he is an ancestor, and he was born in Berks County. His descendants then dispersed through Ohio in to Michigan and points west. Both Johannes Keller and Anna Maria Maurer are brick walls. I recognize that Keller is an extremely common surname in southeastern Pennsylvania. Not sure if the info is related or useful - I am sure there are other folks with this list who know much more and can supply useful Shartle family details and precise locations. I spent my elementary years of childhood living in Shartlesville and while I haven't researched the Shartle family I do have some recollections of the local history/myths and "facts". We lived just outside the village and near our house along the road [Old 22} was a historical marker type sign. It said something to the effect that Col. Peter Shartle had settled there in 1765 and had founded the village [Shartlesville] in 1775. I know his family had an Inn there in the area at some point and that his Inn was the place folks in the area came for safety during the colonial Indian confrontations [like the Revolution when the Blue Mountain was the edge of the frontier]. I was always led to believe that the first original Inn was somehow connected to Lesher's Hotel [later called the Shartlesville Hotel] but I do not know for sure if this is accurate. Based on recalled conversations/comments I heard as a child with lifelong residents for neighbors who were friends of my mom's family. I also recall that Shartlesville celebrated its bicentennial in 1965, so perhaps the village did start earlier. When updating the electrical wiring in our house my dad found that the interior structure of the walls for half the house was made of big thick logs with mud/clay chink filler and that apparently the house was an expanded/updated/modernized log house. As far as I know no one [adult parents] ever looked into it, but since the sign was right there we imagined that ours was one of the "original" historic houses in the village, perhaps even Shartle's. At any rate I suspect that your George Shartle is connected to this Peter Shartle family. My guess would be a son given the 1771 birth you mentioned. At any rate perhaps this info will help direct your search. Gail **************Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? Get new twists on family favorites at AOL Food. Geri: Thank you for the information on Hartman Leithiser. From your response, I was able to find additional information on their daughter, Frederica. However, I cannot find anything, even a name, on the other child (a son?). There was a Hartman Leithiser born in 1824 who may have been a grandson, but I am drawing a blank. Can you help? Re: Hartman Leithiser b.1753,m.1790 to Elizabeth Sauerbier, d.1828/9 and resided in Hamburg, Berks. He served in the Revolutionary Army. My records are as follows. The Grim Ancestry book, page 128 lists him, but does not give a birth date. It says that he married Esther Kershner (21 dec 1783 to 26 oct 1857) and lists 6 children. The Blair typescript, page 166 says that he first married Elizabeth Landis, born 10 Apr 1773 and died 30 apr 1801 and had 2 hildren by her. He second married Esther Kerschner and had 5 children by her. Esther married George Sticher after George Shartle's death. George Sticher was born 3 Oct 1781, and died 21 Feb 1859. I think the Blair typescript is to be trusted. Further, the Blair Typescript says that George Schertel is believed to be buried behind the church at Womelsdorf in Heidelberg twp. Other sources say St Michaels church. George Built the first brick residence in Shartlesville, which was later owned by Senator Benjamin Nunemacher. He and wife Esther lived on his farm in Heidelberg Twp, between Womelsdorf and Robesonia. That's all I have on George.
