Dear Berks County Researchers: I am trying to determine which William Gilbert is my ancestor. I know that he was born about 1822 in Berks County. He married Rachel Royer, daughter of Jacob Royer and Elizabeth Bassett. I did locate two entries for Reading, PA deaths from the Berks County Register of Wills Office but I am not sure which one is the correct one? William appears in the 1880 Census of Reading, PA and by 1900 he is deceased. I did locate the following in the Register of Wills Office: Reading City Death Record Search -- *Last_Name* *First_Name* *Middle__Name* *Suffix* *Date_of_Death* *Line_Number* Gilbert William 3/11/1883 12:00:00 AM 194 Gilbert William 5/15/1889 12:00:00 AM 425 Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Chris Smithson Port Deposit, Maryland
Dear Berks County Researchers: I am looking for information to document the ancestry of Elizabeth Bassett who married Jacob Royer in Berks County, Pennsylvania. All that I do know is that she was listed as the mother of Rachel Royer Gilbert who was born in 1821 in Berks County and died in 1914 in Harrisburg, PA. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Chris Smithson Port Deposit, Maryland

I've "rescued" two old photographs belonging to the ENCK Family of Pennsylvania. The first is a photograph of Levi ENCK which was taken at the Hafer Studio in Reading, PA. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Levi likely in his teens or 20's at the time it was taken. The second photograph is one of Mr. & Mrs. Henry K. ENCK which was taken at the J. Good Studio in Lancaster, PA. This second photograph was probably taken in the 1860's or 1870's with the couple likely in their 30's or 40's at the time it was taken. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding the people in the photographs: Levi ENCK b. 14 Feb 1859 in Clay Township, PA to parents Samuel ENCK and Susanna GOSHERT. Is there anyone in Reading who can find out how long the Register of Wills server will be down? Only the main search menu comes up, and when you try to go to the diff items on the menu, a server error results. Thanks..... Diana in AL - 12:42am CDT audianaq@msn.com
Cause of cold winter that drove Palatines to America: "The spatial distribution of the temperature anomalies for the coldest winter 1709 reveals negative departures of up to 5°C over Central and Eastern Europe, Southern Scandinavia as well as over Western Russia. Anomalies of the order of minus 2°C are found over the remaining parts of Europe.... "The corresponding SLP distribution indicates high pressure over Scandinavia and western Russia and low pressure from Iceland towards the eastern Mediterranean. Between the high in the North and the low in the south cold and dry continental air was advected from Russia towards Eastern and Central Europe responsible for the extremely low temperature. [emphasis added] The anomaly charts clearly point to negative SLP anomalies stretching from the Atlantic over the Mediterranean until the Near East region." Sara...... There is a Daniel G KNABB shown at Chas Evans buried on 4/3/1884. The Cemetery CD does not have any more info, but you can write to the cemetery and ask for plot info. for him, age at death, etc. http://www.cevans.com/ There is a window on their site for email requests. Also there is a Silas KNAPP buried in Charles Evans on 7/23/1849. Morris M ANCONA buried on 3/23/1854 Info on all 3 plots should give some clues as whatever ties there may be. The Daniel Y KNABB that you mention was Daniel Yoder KNABB, a diff Daniel. There is a BIO on him, his wife and children, on the Berks Co Board at http://www.pa-roots.com/~berks/books/montgomery/k16.html I don't see anything to connect him to the Daniel G KNABB. Diana in Pelham, AL audianaq@msn.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: sstraub@talstar.com To: PABERKS@rootsweb.com Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2008 Subject: [PABERKS] Request for help to clarify family relationship to DANIEL KNABB In a letter written on 4-3-1884 my great grandmother Sarah Almaretta SCHROEDER (nee ANCONA) to her son says that they had received "the sad news of your Uncle Daniel G (Note: this initial is hard to read and may not be a "G") KNABB's death ~ he died on the 28 of March & was buried this afternoon in Charles Evans Cemetry (sic - Cemetery)" I need assistance in making the connection of my family to Daniel KNABB. I have found some information about a Daniel Y. KNABB on the Berks PA site but can not really make a link. Is there a connection to ANCONA, SCHROEDER, OR SCHOMM (SCHUM)? Sarah Almaretta SCHROEDER (nee ANCONA) was born 7-3-1828 Berks County and died 2-27-1899 Mazeppa, Buffalo Township, Union County, PA. She was a daughter of Dr. Morris M. ANCONA (b. 2-9-1791 London England; d. 3-20-1854 Pottsville, PA) who lived in Alsace Township in Berks County at various times in his life. Dr. Ancona's wife was Mary Ann KNAPP (b. 12-2-1802 Orange County NY; d. 9-5-1874 Union County PA) She was the daughter of Silas KNAPP (b. 4-2-1779, unknown location; d. 7-28-1849 Alsace Township, Berks County) and Bathsheba (or Barsheba) DAN (DANN) (b. April 1776 Newburgh NY; d. 2-28-1835). Sarah's husband was Jacob Schum SCHROEDER (b. 7-25-1827 in PA; d. 3-22-1905 in Reading, PA). He lived on a farm with his family in Exeter Township (confirmed 1850 census). His father was Gottlich Heinrich Schroeder (b. 8-12-1795 Allentown PA; d. 5-12-1875 PA probably Berks County). His mother was Margaretha SCHOMM (SCHUM) (b. 12-6-1794; d. 3-8-1859 PA probably Berks County) Both Gottlich and Margaretha are buried in the old Spies Church Cemetery, Alsace Township. I was unaware of any relationship to anyone with the surname KNABB. Of course, it is somewhat confusing since Sarah's mother was a KNAPP. I have never had any information that there were any KNAPP relatives in the Berks county area. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks. Sara A. Straub, Tallahassee, Florida
