John Sassaman: Did you have a sister or a relative living in Reading, PA in the 1930's named Ruth ?? She was an attractive girl that I have wondered what happened to her. We paled around together and I've lost track when I went into service ...............et ----- Original Message ----- From: "john sassaman" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, December 16, 2010 6:06 AM Subject: [PABERKS] Benefits of Heritage Quest > > I like both Heritage Quest AND Ancestry.com. > Currently, I do not have a subscription to Ancestry.com. I have access to Heritage Quest through my local Cobb County library in Marietta, GA. I'm able to access it from home through Galileo with a password I get with my library card. http://www.galileo.usg.edu/welcome/?Welcome I like Heritage Quest search engine for US Census. It is different from Ancestry.com which is good for finding info. For example, I can search for all the (first name) Nancy's in the 1880 census in Pennsylvania. It will give a large number of hits and show them by county. I can then select Berks County and find out the misspelling of the family name like Knisely is spelled Knysly or Knisley. Also, like John just said and I'll footstomp, Heritage Quest has a book section where you can search by keyword like Berks County and find family genealogy and history of Berks County kinds of book. You might be lucky to find a biographical sketch of a family member in the books. Great resource and works well in combination with Ancestry.com to find family info. I like both Heritage Quest AND Ancestry.com. Currently, I do not have a subscription to Ancestry.com. Living in Minnesota, the Hennepin LIbrary does support Heritage Quest, so I have access to Heritage Quest from my home. Heritage quest, like Ancestry, has the Census Records online. Heritage quest, has the Rev. War Pension records, and also has many Family History and Biographical books online too. Most of my Ancestors resided in Berks County. For my research, Heritage Quest, online Newspapers, and the Berks COunty Historical Society provide me with most of the information I need. I have used the Library edition of Ancestry.com to look at Census records, and for me, Heritage Quest's Census record access is both more convenient, and easier to use. If I did not have my family tree so complete already, I am sure that I would make more use of Ancestry.com. Perhaps someday in the future, when all German records are translated and online via Ancestry, I will choose to join Ancestry once more, but for now, Berks and Heritage Quest are what I need. Also, I am aware that Ancestry bought footnote, which has provided free access to the Pennsylvania (Rev War) Archives. I have most of those series on CD, but find that the search engine for footnote is easier to use. Heritage Quest does not have the Pennsylvania Archive series' online, and for a Pennsylvania Researcher like myself, this is a disadvantage. Michelle. Here is an approximate translation: I would like additional information about these Stamms from the Bern Church Cemetery list. I am seeking the parents of Jois Melchior Stamm, born circa 1700, and Johann Michael Stamm, born after 1700 in Odenwald on the Kraichgau. A Christian Stamm is also married to a Brogle from Aargau. Many thanks in advance. With friendly greetings. Irmgard Wellman-Stamm. -----Original Message----- >From: [email protected] >Sent: Dec 14, 2010 11:27 PM >To: [email protected] >Subject: PABERKS Digest, Vol 5, Issue 309 > > > > ==== PABERKS Mailing List ==== > >When replying to a digest message, quote only the specific message to which you are replying, removing the rest of the digest from your reply. Where did they marry? Her family must not have lived in Berks Co for very long. How do you know she was actually born in Berks Co? Is there a newspaper OBIT for either of them? A particular church they belonged to? The PAGENWEB archives has county histories online: http://usgwarchives.net/pa/pahist.htm There are 2 for Fayette Co. Also check the site for the counties where you know they lived. Dover PA is York Co. There is nothing showing a town of Orbosonia PA, but there is Orbisonia in Huntingdon Co, incorporated in 1855. There is also a Millcreek in that county. Huntingdon is the county seat of Huntingdon CO PA. Good luck. If you can find OBITs in the WI papers, they might be of help. Author: cranevl Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.berks/10239.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Catherine (18 May 1791, Reading, PA - 14 Jan 1880, Dekorra, Columbia Co., WI) married Amos Laughlin (29 Aug 1787 - Fayette Co., PA - 2 Feb 1856, Dekorrah, WI). We can't find any information about his family either. Catherine and Amos had at least 10 childdren supposedly born in Orbosonia or Dover, PA (family records vary) - Alexander, 1812; George W., 1816; Rachel, 1818; Valentine, 1830; Amos Hartley, 1822, etc. We descend from Rachel who married John T. Dorland, born 17 Jan 1816 in Huntingdon, PA to Joseph Dorland and ELizabeth Woodburn. One record notes that Rachel and John married in Milcreek, PA in 1940. Their first child, Margaret, was born in Huntingdon, PA about 1845. Do you know of any good sources online for the kind of information I'm looking for? We can trace the Dorland family, but not the Geissler or Laughlin families? Thank you!! Vicky Crane Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
