There seem to be quite a few articles on this family. Have you tried the Berks County Register of Wills, Genealogy Section? Ed, I have never found what happened to Catharine and Peter LYKENS/var. Maybe they did leave the area. Catharine was a KNEPPER, and born in Europe. I have her birthday as 5/5/1732, born in Solingen, Westfalen, Germany, so she is not the one shown in Schwarzwald burials. I have not figured out who that Catharine FRIESZ was! I did find a William LYKENS born in Montgomery Co to a Joseph and Sara, a Quaker, b 17 10mo 1768 at Abington Monthly Meeting. He could be the William who m Rebecca Wicklein, dau of Adam Wicklein and Catharine Seifrit. Adam Wicklein was from Montgomery Co before he came to Robeson, Berks in 1780s. William and Rebecca married at Schwarzwald in 6/28/1796, and both were shown from Robeson then. His surname was mispelled in the transcribed marriage record as Landon. Here are children I have for them: They only had 1 son, Wm Jr. I don't know when or where they died either. Schwarzwald shows LEICKEN as spelling in baptisms. Diana [email protected] From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2011 06:40:39 -0600 Subject: [PABERKS] Fwd: Lykens and Fries families of Robeson tp. Apologies if this is a repost. I believe that I errantly sent it to the old Berks listserv address three weeks ago, as it never came through my digest. When researching Colonial families, I favor the "slash and burn" technique. Basically, using warrantee maps, research all the families living on the tracts surrounding your ancestors. Move out in degrees of two. Communities were rather small (compared to today) and most people married others who lived in their community. The idea of slash and burn is that--buried in estate records or land records of neighbors--your ancestors will turn up. And so it is with my Lykens family. I have previously posted queries trying to determine the parentage of William Lykens (or Liken, or Leicken, etc.), John Lykens, and Samuel Lykens, who began families in Robeson tp. in the 1795-1805 time range. However, I could not discern parentage. No adult Lykens were in the area from 1780-1800. An earlier generation of Lykens had moved down to Virginia. I finally found evidence while researching the Frees family who lived several tracts away from the 1737 Peter Leycon warrant land. A Berks County researcher had kindly posted a transcript of estate records for John Frees, who died in Robeson tp. in 1770. A 1774 document identifies that his widow Catharine was now married to Peter "Liking." John Frees' last will & testament allows his widow to reside on his plantation until his youngest child turns 12 (this would have been until 1781). Sure enough, I find no Frees's in Robeson tax records in 1779, 1780, and 1781. But there is Peter Likin/Liking (I had apparently missed this fact in my research long ago--a reminder to always check again to be sure). Peter Likin/Liking is gone by 1784 and John Frees (the eldest son of John Frees, who was given right to the land) appears in tax records. The circumstantial evidence appears to suggest that Peter Lykens--who was a freeman on the 1768 Robeson tax records--married the widow Anna Catharina Frees circa 1772. They had at least three children: William, John, and Samuel. It appears that Samuel may have been the youngest child--I have what I presume to be his tombstone in Lancaster County giving a 1784 birthdate. (He first appears in tax records in 1805.) Question: What happened to Peter Lykens? I find no record after 1781. It would appear he was alive in 1784. I find no estate records. The Schwartzwald Church records give the burial of Anna Catharina Friesz, 1734-1806. This would appear to be John Friesz's widow, but why is her surname given as Friesz if she had married Peter Lykens? For Fries researchers, this opens the possibility of more children being born to Anna Catharina (Knepper) Fries. The 1770 John Frees estate file provides a clue that leads to a strong likelihood, but I just need confirming evidence. 5 Incidentally, another Berks estate file--one for David Gerrard--dated 1782, identify a deceased daughter married to one Andrew Likins. It provides a listing of all their children. This Andrew Likins had moved to Virginia, where he died in 1780. It is this estate file only that provides proof of marriage and a list of children. But no one would know unless they had looked in the Gerrard estate file. The point is that there is much buried information out there. I'm hoping that someday the Berks County estate files were be made available online so that volunteer researchers can begin abstracting these files. Many thanks to the researchers who made the Frees and Gerrard files available online. A wish if anyone has access: The Berks County Historical Society has a book of compiled tax records from 1752-1799, alphabatized by family. It is more thorough than records I have access to nline. If anyone could check the pages for Likins/Lykens/etc., I would appreciate it. Perhaps Peter appears elsewhere.
>From "Dialog", Winter 2010, a publication of Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries: "Now-grown Orphan Starts Fund to Honor the 'only mother he ever knew' " As a young child, Sheldon FEES had a red fire truck. He remembered it vividly but couldn't figure out why it was so important to him. Almost 15 years ago, when FEES attended the 100th anniversary of The Lutheran Home of Topton, which began as a children's home but is now a Diakon Senior Living Community, the significance of the fire truck - and other memories of his childhood - began to make sense to him. Shortly after he was born, FEES came to live at The Lutheran Home when his mother passed away. Even though FEES spent 17 years at the orphanage, he had very few memories of it as an adult. But he did remember the love and kindness offered by one of his caregivers at the baby cottage. "Sarah GABEL provided consistent, loving care, "says FEES. "She didn't just bathe us and teach us our prayers, she loved each of us. She was the closest thing to a mother I ever had." For 29 years, GABEL cared for hundreds of infants at the orphanage. She died in 1950 at the age of 86 and is buried in a small cemetery at The Lutheran Home at Topton, not far from where the baby cottage once stood. Her obituary read: "All who came in contact with her should be an inspiration for us to carry on the work she so nobly began." This tribute to GABEL's life explains why FEES decided to share his memories of his childhood - he wants to encourage others who had the same experience with GABEL to tell their stories and sustain her memory. "She gave her whole life to us and I don't want her to be forgotten," says FEES. As a teenager, FEES tended the flower garden at the orphanage. The tools he used in the garden were kept in the basement of the baby cottage. One day, he went downstairs to get the tools when he saw a red fire truck - his red fire truck. He knew it was his, but he didn't pick it up. He left it in the closet. Many years later, he started thinking about the vehicle. He looked online and in antique stores until he found a truck as he remembered it from his childhood. "I scratched my initials on it," says FEES. "I finally had some closure." He has remembered many other things about his childhood since his visit to The Lutheran Home 15 years ago. Most importantly, he has remembered things about GABEL - how she loved each child and gave her entire life to nurture and raise the child as if he or she was her own. FEE is comforted by the fact that he was loved by Sarah GABEL. ********************************************************************* There is no contact information, but there is a website for Diakon.org Sue Marcus

His death date is 1921, in Finland, so he did return there to become a farmer. His children were born between 1877 through 1890, with almost no years without a child being born. If you know the exact date of death you may also find it in the Reading Eagle which is online at Google Newspapers. Just because he did not died in Reading his association with Berks County could earn him an obituary, especially if there were siblings, parents, or children remaining in Reading. An obituary for one of my ancestors was in the Reading Eagle even though he died in Philadelphia. If you look in the Reading Eagle you will need to look at it page by page for a couple of weeks after the deaths, as it may not be picked up in the Google index. Additionally you may wish to check other newspapers in the area of Lynn, PA On 1/10/2011 5:23 PM, JRBinkley wrote: > You won't find a birth certificate that early (1700s), so look in > church baptismal records. > > 1874 death may be recorded by the county, but you'll have to go to the > county archives to get it; also might show in an obituary in a > newspaper, so check those sources online (I can't give you specifics > for Berks Co or Lynn). > > Marriage is too early to have been in a newspaper (generally starts > around 1840s, I think) but should show in some church's records. > > Donna Irish's book on PA German Marriages doesn't show George Philip > but shows his brother Jonathan Sittler b. 1 Aug 1799, d. You won't find a birth certificate that early (1700s), so look in church baptismal records. 1874 death may be recorded by the county, but you'll have to go to the county archives to get it; also might show in an obituary in a newspaper, so check those sources online (I can't give you specifics for Berks Co or Lynn). Marriage is too early to have been in a newspaper (generally starts around 1840s, I think) but should show in some church's records. Donna Irish's book on PA German Marriages doesn't show George Philip but shows his brother Jonathan Sittler b. 1 Aug 1799, d. Feb 1834, also marrying a Straub girl, Magdalena, on 3 Mar 1822., found in the Helffrich personal records Part 12, Roll 141-142. Shearer; d/o Henry Yorgey (1775-1844) and Dolly Derr (no dates); s/o Henry Yorgey (1751-1823)and Catharina Wentzel; s/o Heinrich Georgi (no dates). Do you have Heinrich Georg arriving on the ship Sally in 1772? I am looking for the dates of b and d for Dolly Derr Yorgey and her mother. I have very little on the Derrs other than what is in the wills. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He and Dolly had at least 3 sons and a daughter, Catherine, 1810 -1891, who married Samuel T. Shearer. Henry descends from Henry Yorgey 1751-1823 and Catharina Wentzel. His siblings were Anna Marie, Johannes, Peter, Anna Catherine, and Mathias born between abt 1773 and 1787. I have Johan Heinrich Georgi at the beginning of this line. We seem to be referring to the same family, but my research has been limited. I am interested in knowing who Dolly's mother was and any of her ancestors.
