    1. [PABERKS] Susanna Anna Matternus
    2. keith nuttle
    3. I am looking to confirm the date of death of Susanna Anna (Matternus) Barlet, B:1821 She may have attended the St. Johns Haim's Church. She married Ephriam Barlett in 1844. They had two children Henry Franklin Barlett B:1845 and Priscillia Elizabeth Barlett B:1849. The family is listed in the 1860 Reading census. Priscillia Elizabeth died in 1860. By the 1870 census Ephraim Barlett is living with his second wife and two young sons in Reading. Have found no entries that can be confirmed for Henry Franklin nor Susanna after the 1860 census. It is believed Susanna died after the date of 1860 census and before the birth of Ephriam first son by his second wife in December 1865 Thai you

    1. [PABERKS] Let's Find Some Ancestors! :-)
    2. Richard Berkheiser
    3. Hi everyone! Let's find some ancestors! :-) Here's how we'll do this particular Roll Call. List one name per e-mail or one couple or family per e-mail. Please do not list three to four generations. That gets a little hard to follow especially for those in plain text Digest Mode. Remember to place the name you're researching in the Subject line of your e-mail. That will make it easier for those that browse their list mail. Also mention any ancestor you're having a difficult time finding. Maybe the answer lies among the membership of this list. Its always nice to crumble a brick wall or two. :-) Please be brief in your list queries. Happy hunting! Rick B List Admin

Author: bjburdan Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.berks/10259.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: >From the Berks County Historical Society http://www.berkshistory.org/articles/southmountain.html South Mountain Resorts Bynden Wood The records of the building which we now know as Bynden Wood are sketchy. Perhaps some enterprising student of local history will be able to find some solid answers in detail. The same statement may be made concerning the other mountain homes which were not, primarily, health resorts. Among these there were Pomeroy's, Highland House (now known as Chit-Chat), Hillside, Park Mansion (later Indiandale), and other resorts in the WernersvilleVinemont area. Bynden Wood was originally constructed in 1869 by John B. Stetson, the founder of a world-famous hat company. He built it as a summer home. The structure, which he named Bynden Wood, overlooked areas in Berks and Lancaster counties. In 1888 the property was purchased by John Tolbert of Philadelphia. Mr. Tolbert used it as a summer home until his death in 1896. For the next two years it was used as a summer residence by Mr. and Mrs. William H. Luden of Reading. In 1898 the property was converted into a summer resort and operated by the Tolbert heirs. Around the turn of the century the Bynden Wood property was purchased by Doctor Octavia Krum, who operated the sanatorium until her death. Miss Mary Morton, daughter of Levi P. Morton, was the next owner of the property. During her ownership, the structure was used as a private summer home. From 1932 to 1947 it again became a summer resort. In 1947 the Wyomissing Foundation purchased the property and presented it to the Central Y.M.C.A. in Reading. It is currently being used as a cultural center. The South Mountain resorts, during their heyday, provided employment for many persons in western Berks. Their decline coincided, in time, with the rapid development of the textile industry in areas west of Reading. And most of those employees displaced by the closing of the sanatoriums found ready employment elsewhere. The rise, decline, and abandonment of the health resorts along South Mountain is history. The vestiges of their day of glory may still be seen and the leafy paths, cool springs, and grand views may still be enjoyed today. 3. Good day, Using the Historical Society of Berks County church record index, I have the following records that I would love to be able to see. If anyone owns the transcripts of the churchbooks, or has access to them, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks to clues from other researchers, I am hot on the trail of ancestor Daniel F. Karver's ancestry. Daniel married Mary Ann Grow in 1853 and resided briefly in Earl and Amity townships before moving to Schuylkill County, where he died in 1873 at 40 years of age. It now appears that his father was Samuel Kerber/Karver/Kerwer/Karvey/Carver, whose name appears with MANY variants. Based on names appearing together, I think Samuel and his children appear as Kerwer in the Trinity Lutheran Reading records indicated below. If I have some exact dates, I can confirm or disprove my suspicions. Any help appreciated! I will eventually compile and post any findings. Also a death record for Mary Ann Born on Dec. 20, no year (after 1898 before 1912). I have sent for death certificates for Cambria Co. but never for Berks County. These deaths & burials were at Blessed Sacrament church in Bally, Pa. Many of my Born family were baptized, married and died there from 1857 to maybe as late as 1912. Any help will be appreciated. Yesterday, I searched for my wife's grandmother Nancy Wanner b. 1907 living in Reading. I got a hit for a 1924 school yearbook for Reading High School for Girls. The hit was good. It is her. Worth checking out. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
