I believe there is a way to do a screen copy on a Mac but have never used a Mac. On a Windows PC, use the following technique Find the article you want to copy. Maximize it in the window, which may mean to do it in parts to get a readable copy. On the key board there is a key called print screen. It is usually in the upper right of the key board. (On my HP laptop it is a combination of keys [FN] [PRT Sc]). This places a copy of the screen into the clipboard. I use an image viewer called Irfanview, (It is a free download with OCR capabilities) but any good image viewer would work. Copy the screen image to the image viewer. Using the crop function of the image viewer cut the article from the newspaper. Save the cropped image in a temporary file to the harddrive. Minimize the viewer, and Maximize the Browser window with the newspaper article. Move the page up, until the last line of the previous part is at the top of the newspaper window. (If you change the zoom for the page you will have to start over) Repeat the screen copy, pasting into the viewer, cropping and saving the file to a new temporary file. As I said I use Irfanview. In that program there is a panorama function. Using this function connect the all of the parts back together in the order they were cut from the paper, and save the article. Once you have done it a couple of times, you can copy an article of a dozen paragraphs in the time it took me to write this. Using this technique, any thing you see on your screen can be saved to a file. If you like and are using a program like Irfanview, you can use the optical character recognition (OCR) to transcribe the article into text. With Irfaniview the OCR's scan is shown in a window that you can correct before saving it. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. We are stuck and unable to trace the parents of Anna Koenig and/or Joseph Rickert, her spouse. One census shows Catherine Koenig as a boarder. We were told as youngsters that Joseph came from Baden, and Anna from Whitenburg. I have tried several searches and can't seem to find any links. Any tips would be truly appreciated. Walter, I recommend you go back to the records of the Orphans Court. Especially if the estate was solvent, When a father died the court would name guardians for all children under the age of 14. The children over the age of 14 could recommend who they wanted as guardian. These records continue until the youngest heir comes of age. In Lancaster Co., PA, It took over 20 years to settle the estate of my GGGG- Grandfather. My GGG-Grandfather was a babe in arms when his father (GGGG-Grandfather) died. If the estate is insolvent, it is a different story. The creditors get in line first, the widow and children are left on their own. I have a male ancestor, Johann Jacob HILL, who died in 1797 in Windsor Township, Berks County, leaving behind his widow, Hannah (Anna) and, among others, a male child, Johann Jacob, about 8 years old. The male child, according to the will, is to inherit the property (200-300 acres) when he reaches the age of 21. In the meantime, a guardian is to be appointed for him, to oversee the estate and protect his rights. My question is this: In the 1800 and 1810 census will the "head of household" for the property be listed as the mother or the guardian? (I have not found the mother in Windsor Township in the 1800 census.) Also note that the mother, Hannah, apparently remarries UNKNOWN WEIGLY some time before 1803, when there is a request for guardians - Orphans Court 5:51, from what I understand. Unfortunately, I do not know the name of the appointed guardian. Nothing similar to WEIGLY appears in the 1810 census, either. Any information, legal or otherwise, would be appreciated. Lynn K.
