Within this information on the Hechlers that you have, do you have anything that indicates a relationship between them and either (or both) of two Jacob Hechlers (father and son?)that lived in Somerset Co at least from the early 1800s? A Jacob Hechler (b. 1801) may have been born in Berks co or it may have been his father (also a Jacob) that was born in Berks Co. These two Jacob Hechlers are listed in several documents (tax lists and census) for Middlecreek Twp in Somerset Co but further detail on the elder Jacob is very scant. The Jacob b. 1801 is my ggggrandfather. (He, or his father, are said to have come to Somerset Co from Berks Co with the colony of Scotts and Wills). This Jacob's son Aaron married a woman named Scott. I am trying to find more info (confirmation) of our Jacob's father as well as the father of that man. We believe they are tied into the George, Hans George, Johannes, Jean Jacques Hechlers/Hecklers but cannot confirm. Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Judy, I would guess you know that your Martin Altstadt, Jabob Seltzer, and Rudolph Walter were passengers on the ship Mortonhouse arriving in Philadelphia on 8/17/1929? Were they all from the same town of Freinsheim? I'd like to know if you have ever traced any of the other families on the Mortonhouse? I have found a Jacob, Richard, and Anna Margaret Fetter on that ship, apparently also from Freinsheim. I am studying the origins of the Mortonhouse passengers because I am looking for clues as to the origin of the Johannes Binkler/Benkelker/Binkley on that list. A great number of those passengers were from the area just west of Manheim. If you know the towns of origin of any of them, please let me know. Jeff: The parents of Lydia SCHNEIDER/SNYDER are Daniel SNYDER and Sarah Elizabeth Seltzer KNABB, a dau of Michael KNABB and Eva Magdalena SELTZER, only dau of Jacob SELTZER and wife Anna Elizabeth (unk). Sarah E Seltzer KNABB was the second wife of Daniel Schneider. His first wife was her sister, Susanna Seltzer, who died 3/9/1782 at age 22/10/7 per Schwarzwald Reformed burials. Daniel SCHNEIDER was a son of Peter SCHNEIDER and Eve Appolonia Youngman/Jungman. Here is death notice of Eva: Death Notices and Obituaries from Reading Adler Newspaper, (Tuesday 3/18/1823 Edition): "Eva Magdalena Knabb, of Oley Twp, this county, widow of Michael Knabb, died on the 18th inst, of old age. She outlived 11 children, 57 grandchildren, and 67 great-grandchildren. She was buried in Knabb cemetery in Oley." [I only have 8 children for her - Nicholas, Mary Esther, Susanna, Peter, Sarah Elizabeth, Jacob, Catharine Rebecca, and Daniel S. Knabb. Does anyone have the other 3? Note the BIO p 568, shown below, says they had 8 children] p 1312: History of Berks Co, M Montgomery, 1909: KNABB A family graveyard near the dwelling contains the remains of the three brothers and a number of their descendants. John died unmarried in the forty-eighth year of his age; Peter died in the seventy-fourth year of his age, and most of his descendants live in Berks county; Michael, who married Eva Magdalena Seltzer, died June 17, 1778. p. 568 of same reference: Surnames: KNABB, YODER, SELTZER, GETZ, ANDREWS, JAMESON, WORMAN Jacob Knabb, in whose death, which occurred Jan. 30, 1889, at his home in Reading, this city and section lost a man of more than ordinary distinction, was born in Union township, Berks county, Aug. 21, 1817, son of Jacob, Sr., and Hannah (Yoder) Knabb, and grandson of Michael and Eve Magdalena (Seltzer) Knabb. Michael Knabb, the grandfather, was a native of Bavaria, born at Pfeldersheim, in the Pfalz, April 17, 1717. About 1737, in company with his two brothers, John and Peter, he came to America, and settled near the Exeter township line, in Oley township, Berks county, Pa., on the farm now occupied by Samuel B. Knabb. The old house was burned in 1816-17, and the same year the present house was erected. A family cemetery on the farm contains the remains of the three brothers and many of their descendants. John died in the forty-eighth year of his age, unmarried, but Peter lived to his seventy-fourth year and left a numerous progeny. Michael Knabb married, on March 11, 1755, Eve Magdalena Seltzer, only child of Jacob and Elizabeth Seltzer, of Heidelberg township, and they became the parents of eight children: Nicholas, Peter, Jacob, Daniel, Susan, Sarah, Catharine and Mary. Michael Knabb died June 17, 1778, in the sixty-second year of his age, and was laid to rest in the family ce! metery above mentioned. Lydia was shown as Lidia SCHNEIDER in Schwarzwald baptisms, birth as you have it; she was bapt on 4/29/1799 there, spons: Jacob Schneider and Anna M. Knab. I think her death date was at least by 7/15 since that is the date of her obituary. She was buried at Charles Evans on 7/17/1882. Hi Elizabeth, There is a series of Books by Henry Z Jones about the early Palatine Settlers in New York. My ancestors (Johan George Hähn & Veronica Koch) are in the 2nd series "More Palatine Settlers." They moved to the Tulpehocken area. He does not have all of the settlers but he lists quite a number of them. You could check to see if there are any Wolf/Woolf. Thank you for this information, Bob. I have done a bit of research on this group but have not found anyone with the surname of WOLF/WOOLF, etc in that group... so far. Can you access the book you mention, "Boeshore (Beshore) Family History"? I have been searching for the parents of a Catherina/Catharine/etc. BOSHAAR (BESHORE, etc) who married Jonathan WOLF, a son of the Mathias I am seeking. Jonathan was b. 1801-1803 in Pine Grove, Schuylkill County, PA and moved to Greenpoint, Lebanon County, PA. I can find nothing on her or her family prior to her marriage. My Umbenauers/Umbenhowers also were in Tulpehocken and (my branch) moved on to Pine Grove. Here is a segment from the Boeshore (Beshore) Family History that might provide a clue for you: "One Jaques Milne Le Baisseur, a French Huguenot, fled from his home in Guyenne (an area and former province in southwest France) to England about 1610. This was after the horrible massacre of St. Bartholomew which started in Paris in 1572, and which caused intense persecutions of all the French Protestants. In 1614, he was enrolled as a member of the French Huguenot Church in Norwich, England. From here, about a century later, some of the descendants of Jacques, in 1708, left for New York State, arriving in Schoharie Valley, along the Hudson River. This was the period when Queen Anne of England encouraged the French Huguenots and Palatines to go to New York State instead of to Pennsylvania. Her plan was to populate the Hudson Valley so as to provide a better defense against the marauding French and Indians, in what is know as Queen Anne's French and Indian War. This war was really an extension of the War of the Spanish Succession then going on in Europe(Stapleton). About the same time this Boeshore family met with Conrad Weiser and other Palatines and Huguenots in New York State in 1720 and joined the Scholorie immigration to the Tulpehocken country of Berks county in Pennsylvania. This route followed from Lake Oswego in New York State, thence down the Susquehanna river to the mouth of the Swatara and thence up the Swatara to the Tulpehocken section. One of the Boeshores who was active in this group was Mathias Basehore, born about 1700. The historian, Rupp, to whom we are indebted for much of our information on the Palatine and Huguenot immigrants, is descended from this Mathias Basehore. Rupp later became a famous Indian fighter in the following French and Indian Wars. " Good luck! Yes, my husband's great-grandfather, Alfred (Allen, or A J) Wolfe owned that store. Who were your parents? My husband would probably recognize their name. We would love to hear what they remember!!! One can easily see how Bailor could become a derivative of the original Germanic name. This family resided in the Brecknock Township region of Berks County, not far from the Chester County border, from 1760 onward. Early progenitors of the family were Bernhard Behler and Marcus Behler. The given name Marcus--not common among the early PA Germans--struck me as a link based on the previous post. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I looked at the census records. It is difficult to make a match from the early records but it appears your John may have been living in Perry County in 1840. On that same census there is a Markus (sp ?) Bailor. It certainly appears John is living in Perry County in the 1850 and 1860 census with his wife Sarah. You may know that Port Royal is in a Juniata County, which borders Perry County. I also noted that John's Findagrave memorial indicates he was survived by a brother, Joseph, living in Perry County. What I would be inclined to consider is asking the Perry Historians for assistance. The group seems to have extensive records. http://theperryhistorians.org/2.html What I am thinking is that they might find a will of a Bailor that names both John and Joseph as sons and perhaps others. It appears that the family owned land in Perry County. They also indicate they have papers back to the early 1820s so there may be something about the death of the first wife in the index they have. Here is their research request information if you cannot get there in person to research. http://theperryhistorians.org/resources/Research.pdf (It appears that a $20 down payment is required for the initial hour of research. FYI: I have always had good experiences dealing with non-profit historical societies. I never had occasion to use one in Perry County however. The fees were reasonable and the research was excellent. Of course, there is always the possibility that nothing can be located.) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
