    1. Re: [PABERKS] Early PA Naturalizations
    2. One must distinguish between "taking an oath" and the process of naturalization. Starting in 1727, all immigrants to the British colonies were required to take an oath of allegiance to the Crown and to agree to abide by the laws of England. The process of naturalization to which you refer was a legal proceeding of the Supreme Court which granted the full rights of British citizenship. Part of the process was the swearing of an oath or, in the case of Quakers and Mennonites, an affirmation. The most important advantage of becoming a citizen was the ability to pass title to land through inheritance or deed. I have actually read the english translation, but appreciate the reminder. For some reason I had not noted that John's name was there and that made me wonder. John's (Johan)dob is quite early. Catherine's dob bothers me as well. I have seen the hard evidence for the younger children's dobs and it indicates many years of child bearing for Louisa. This is a general problem among the Foust/Braun/Trace families since they all lived and intermarried in the same region and named their children with similiar names. I am trying to link Benjamin Brown (1801) who married Elizabeth Trace (1811) d/o Jacob Trace to the remainder of the Brown family. The birth dates for Benjamin and Elizabeth are rendered by some as 1806 and 1816 respectively, but their grave markers in Summit Twp, Evergreen Cemetery, are recorded with the age when they died and the year, thus, counting backwards, the dates are @ 1801 and 1811. The children's names! are the same of those who are buried with them as in other records. My best guess for this Benjamin is that he is a child of Peter Brown and Catherine Trace or a son of Johann and Katherine both of these being sons of Frederick and Louisa with ages compatible with Benjamin's birth. Benjamin, having settled in Summit Twp. could be another Brown family altogether. In the margin of a family history I have Ann L. Brown, a daughter of this Benjamin, has Engle scribbled???? I know that Frederick had a brother Engle who immigrated with the family born in 1737 but I have no other info about him or his family. If anyone has info on Benjamin,Frederick's wife, Louisa's last name or the last name of Jacob Brown's (son of Peter b. 1815 and died 1849/50) wife, Elizabeth, please let me know.Sue Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. I've got a question for the list about pre 1776 Naturalizations in PA. My ancestor, Henry Frieman of Bern Twp. was naturalized on 17 Sep 1765 in Philadelphia, along with his neighbor George Ludwig. Travel from Bern Twp. to Philadelphia in 1765 had to be an ordeal, just to take an Oath. Anyone have any knowledge about what this process was all about? I've seen some early residents who refused to take an Oath, possibly Quakers. Other than pledging allegience to the Crown, what was in it for the residents who took this step and for those who didn't? Jim

I am getting confused. You had listed Elizabeth, dau of Frederick Braun (1739) and Louisa as having married Daniel Foust. He would be the son of her sister, Catherine Braun. So--wrong Elizabeth in my email, but same problem. I'm going to check who Elizabeth Brown, daughter of Johann and Katherine married--but I don't think it was Daniel. So he is married to the mysterious Elizabeth??? with a birth date in the same general time frame as many others in this convoluted family. Writing back re confusing aspects of the Braun/Trace/Foust information you sent and I questioned. I did extensive research yesterday at the LDS Fam Hist Library (main one) I found several references to Daniel Foust being married to an Elizabeth, but not Elizabeth Dres (Trace).had married her, she would have married her nephew! The birth dates were different for Daniel's Elizabeth as well. I found the Watson Run cemetery records and they were a goldmine, thank you for the tip. I also went over all of the hard bound copies of the Crawford Co. Genealogical Society publications and gleaned quite a bit of info from them. 2. All I know about David Davis b. 1775 is that he had a brother, name unknown and that the 2 brothers were the first ones to be born in the US. David had a son Samuel Bertram and I can follow that trail, but I can't find anything out about David and his parentage. Bette In a message dated 1/23/2008 11:49:47 A.M. 1. [PABERKS] Church Records

    3. Is there a website that has church records for Oley, Pike, Richmond All Berks county roughly around 1800-1840. I'm trying to peice together my Hess family line and I need to access records. I'm so new to this county. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, can anyone tell me if Bilfeld or Babb are common names back then? I'm hitting quite the wall with those two last names in Berks. My Jacob Hess b. October 1805 I believe was married to either a Polly Bilfeld or Maria Babb, maybe even both. Thank you for your patience and advice. TR
