This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: omasue175 Surnames: Braun Brown Faust Strauch Mertz Niederauer Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.berks/9861/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am trying to sort out the descendents of Johan Peter Braun born 1702 in Germany who immigrated in 1753 with his brother Johan Engle Braun and son Frederick born 1739. I am a direct descendent from Frederick. I have learned recently that Frederick was married first to Eva Mertz b. Abt 1742 in PA, d/o Nicholas Mertz. Frederick was married second to Anna Louisa Strauch Foust, widow of Adam Foust who died at Valley Forge in 1778. I am trying to determine which woman was the mother of Elizabeth Braun and Susanna Braun daughters of Frederick. Louisa was the mother of Frederick, jr. born 1783 and Benjamin born 1787. She would have been a bit too old to have any further children, having had quite a brood with Adam before marrying Frederick--who, by the way, was the father of her son, Adam's (1760) wife, Catherine. Catherine, John, Peter and Michael all appear to be children of Eva Mertz and Frederick--born before Adam Foust died. I do not have any reliable dobs for Susanna! or Elizabeth or spouses. It is reported in histories that one of Catherine Braun's sisters married her husband's brother--that would be Susanna as she is mentioned in connection with Johannes Faust, brother to Adam. Elizabeth, I believe was married to Jacob Niederauer (family became Nedrow). Michael Braun born about 1772 in linked with another Michael Braun of about the same age from a different family, in fact he is listed usually as a son of Michale and Christina with a wife Catherine Scherry. Another links him to a Hanna Knorr, but I can prove neither. If anyone has anything definitive or any bits and pieces on this family, please respond..Sue Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. In the DeTurk genealogy book, pages 14-15, the author lists the 6 children baptized of Johannes DeTurk and Hester Kip, and does not show Katarina. The baptisms were found in the register of the Refugee Congregation there in Frankenthal. The youngest listed is Esther Cornelia DeTurk, 8/17/1687. Assumptions have been made that Katarina was born after this date to them, but if that is true, then I would think the record for her would have been included in the list of the other 6 children baptised at the Netherland Reformed Church in the Palatinate, aka Huguenot Refugee Congregation at Frankenthal for Johannes and Hester. I am not persuaded by the trees on WorldConnect that she is Isaac's sister. But then, I like the hard evidence! > >Somewhere I saw where Isaac came to NY on the Globe with his sister Esther, but her name is not on the list of passengers of that first ship with Rev. Kocherthal's party, so I doubt that is true. He was shown as bachelor then, and name was shown as Isaac Turk/Turck, and he married the widow Wimer/Wemar, who was on the ship with her daughter Catharina age 2, in Fall of 1709 in Esopus NY, according to the DeTurk book. Daughter Esther was baptized in NYC at the French Reformed Congregation on 4/29/1711. So they were on their way to PA by then, per the DeTurk book. >By 3/11/1712, warrant was issued to Isaac for 300 acres in Oley, Phila Co. In one instance a woman is always referred to as Sally, but the baptismal records show her as Sarah. Usually the names are similar or else the name is written so poorly that it was transcribed incorrectly. This could be the case with Katarina. There are two siblings of Isaac's that might have been very poorly transcribed: Jacomina b. 1677 and Esther Cornelia b.1687. Although I have absolutely no evidence, neither have I seen the handwritten documents. "Cornelia" just possibly may be Katarina (similarity in sound, possibility of poor copying). Good guessing. The answer is that he wives of Johannes Keim, Isaac DeTurk, and Jean Bertolet were all sisters, being the daughters of Jean De Hericourt. . The reason that Isaac DeTurk came to Oley is the fact that his wife, the wife of Johannes Keim, and the wife of Jean Bertolet were all sisters, being the daughters of Jean De Haricourt.? As for the two wives of Johannes Keim, (De Haricourt-De Turk), I do not know which is the first wife.?? Patented on 7/28/1712 for 30 pounds. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He found a large grove of walnut trees in Oley Township, which was then part of Philadelphia County, and decided to settle there. Keim went back to the Palatinate in 1701 and married 'Bertha' deTurck. The two returned to America in 1707. Their first child was born in 1708. (I show Katarina born 9/29/1708) The Keim Homestead was built by Johannes' son Jacob in 1753 - it has sat along a quiet stretch of Boyer Road in Oley Township for more than 250 years. Its owner, The Historic Preservation Trust of Berks County, who acquired the homestead in 1978. The Trust is pushing for the federal government to designate the Keim Homestead a national historic landmark. Johannes Keim was the first settler to stake out a claim in the Oley Valley, according to the trust." Now I have that he married Katarina DeTurk, in 1706, 14 days before St Michael's Day which I think was in Sept. I don't know where the Bertha firstname came from in the article. In Oley Valley Heritage: The Colonial Years, by Philip Pendleton, p 177: Johannes KEIM or John KIME/KYME, was shown as early as 1719 in Oley. There is nothing in the DeTurk Genealogy book, pub in 1934, by Eugene P DeTurk, which establishes any relationship of Katarina(Bertha) DeTurk to Isaac who 'was' in the camps in NY before he made his way down to PA. She is not even mentioned at all in the DeTurk genealogy. Later KEIMs are. I would be interested if anyone knows more about this Bertha or Katarina DeTurk and her family, too! Isaac is one of my early ancestors. He was born in Frankenthal c Jan1684/5 per DeTurk genealogy. And he and Katarina were living in abt the same era. Not sure where Frankenthal is in relation to Speir. His daughter Esther DeTurk m Abraham BERTOLET and are my line. Their son Daniel D BERTOLET m Maria YODER and their dau Esther Yoder BERTOLET m Jacob KERST, my gr3, son of George KERST and Elizabeth GELBACH. Hi everyone! Just a reminder about gatewayed messages from the Berks Message Board. These messages come to the list with this disclaimer at the top. "This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list." Which means that postings to the Message Board are copied to this list. When responding to gatewayed or copied messages, you'll need to use the blue link provided in the body of the message to respond to the poster. In other words, you need to respond from the Board side. If you send the reply back to the list only, the board poster might not see your reply if he/she is not subscribed to the list. Now with the gc-gateway@rootsweb.com address showing, you really need to go the Message Board to post your reply. You'll need to register a username and password before you can post to the Message Board. This is still a free service but the registration is to help discourage spammers on the board. Also sometimes you can find the user's e-mail address on the Message Board by clicking on the highlighted in blue username in the top left corner of the posting. Hope this helps! Katarina was the supposed brother to Isaac DeTurck and arrived in the Oley via via NY (via London, via Germany, via France). Arrived in Oley around 1711 from NY. I'm afraid I do not have any information to help I only have their entries in my tree because they are the parents of Jacob Keim who married Magdalena Hoch which ties into my line. I have no other children listed for them and none for Jacob and Magdalena so if you have any details to round out the tree it would be wonderful. (I did not even have the birth and death dates.) Do you know where they are buried as I am planning a grave yard trip to PA in Sept? Good luck in your search. Greetings. I am new to the list and am posting here what I have recently tried on the PALANCAS mailing list. At best it states a discussion on naming practices, spelling variant etc. I have been trying to locate the parents of Johannes Hage & Catherine Frey. A "cousin" did some research back over 10 years ago and donated it to the York Co Historical Trust. In it she give the marriage of this couple as ; Johannes Hage son of Conrad Hag(e) married Catherine Frey daughter of "Late" John Frey on Aug 7, 1781 in East Cocalico Twp. Lancaster Co., PA . No one is able to locate this record. Is it possible its in Berks Co.? I believe I may have found Catherine Frey in Muddy Creek in 1777 in the record below. The record states she is 17 yrs old. Catherine's head stone has her birth day as Aug. 10, 1760. We share the same birthday 200 years apart. PASTORAL ACTS AT THE LUTHERAN & REFORMED CONGREGATION OF THE MUDDY CREEK CHRUCH EAST COCALICO TWP., LANCASTER CO.,PA 1730-1790 R929.37481 R311 v.5 p.118 Johannes Rupp & Margaretha Frey m. in Muddy Creek 20 May 1750 p.207 confirmed in the year 1777: CATHERINE FREY 17yrs Anna Maria Rub (Rupp) 15yrs Michael, Elizabeth, Peter and Catherine Frey were communicants @ St Luke's in 1801 along side with of John & Catherine (Frey) Hage in Chanceford Twp York Co. Also Peter Frey was listed as the administrator to Catherine's Hage/ Hake's estate when she died a widow . I am assuming Peter & Michael are family somehow. John Hage first appears when he purchased land in York Co in 1787 According to the deed registered in York Co. Johann Hage purchased 263 Acres and 120 perchs from John Gohn in 1787. The patent was granted in 1810 for $ 206.5.7 The first record of the family in Church records for this area is 1788 for the birth of son William Hoeck. They had Samuel, Maria Catherina, Frederick & John prior to this according to John Hake's' Will but I have not been able to locate their records. After William came Susanna, Conrad, Benjamin, Elizabeth and Jacob. HAKE, John. Chanceford Township. February 24, 1811 September 26, 1811 Executors: Martin Armstrong and Samuel Hake. Wife: Catharine Hake. Children: Samuel, John, William, Frederick, Conrad, Benjamin, Elizabeth, and Jacob. With John's father being Conrad and its not until his fifth child does he name on after him, he does not follow the German naming custom. His daughter Maria (Heck/Hake) Illges died after childbirth in 1808. Daughter Susanna born 1792 is unaccounted for. His headstone which is in old German spells his name as Hoeck and gives his age at death as 56 jahr That makes his birth year about 1755. * Spelling as Heck on Catherines stone a few of her children are their as Heck and the other have as Hake. But from that time on it has been Hake. There are researchers who have Johannes as the son of Conrad Hage born 1747 who married Marie Clapp in NC. Simply not possible. Unless this Conrad Hage sired him when he as 10-11 yrs old. On Ancestry I have found a Conrad married to Elizabeth Bauman , Conrad Hawk to Sarah Williams and In Strasburg, Lancaster Co. a Conrad Hoke who married Barbara Schenk when they were about 56 years old. So who was his first wife? I also located a Conrad Hage who arrive in Phila in 1755 on ship Friendship. It is possible that he is Johannes father. Would wife and children been listed in the ships records? It might explain why I can't locate a birth or baptism record. Shoot even a will would be nice. In 10 years I have not been able to prove any of these. Any lookups or suggestions are welcome. Melissa **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living.
