If anyone is looking for a history of the Smoke Church, which contains it's records, the church published a history in 1976. I visited the church a few years ago and at that time they had many copies left in their storage closet. I purchased one and the minister seemed open to the idea of selling other copies by mail, if the buyer paid postage charges. The complete title is History of Zion's (Windsor Caslte) United Church of Christ of Perry Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania", published by The Kutztown Publishing Company, Inc., Kutztown, PA, 1976, 232 pages. I looked them up in the phone book and the church address is: Zion United Church of Christ 770 Zion Church Rd Hamburg, PA 19526 phone 610-562-2300 There is a web site for Zion at http://www.berksweb.com/zionucc/ where you can click on headstone inscriptions. The information on the site appears to be an attempt to post the history book I speak of. Betty
Maureen, there was more than one book that I used in the reply on the KLEINs. Which church did you want - Mertz or Smoke? Mertz on Bieber Creek is in 'Berks Co Church Records of 18th Century' by F Edward Wright vol 4, pub 1999 by Willow Bend Books, ISBN #1-58549-357-0. Smoke Church is in 'Collected Church Records of Berks Co', Part one, by Rice and Dellock, pub 1/1995 by Closson Press, ISBN #1-55856-184-6. I don't know about interlibrary loan, but ask your library. Were those KLEINs yours too? Glad to help your brick wall! Elaine.......not at Smoke, but at Mertz: In 'Berks Co Church Records of the 18th Century', F Edward Wright, vol 4, pub 1999, page 174: Benjamin KLEIN, born 1/21/1791, s/o Philipp and Elisab., Mertz Lutheran Church(Christ Church on Bieber Creek), bapt 4/10, spons: David KLEIN and wife Catharine. I think this David may be brother of Philip as he and wife Catharine had several children born in 1780-1800 period in various churches in that area. In 'Montgomery Co PA Births 1682-1800', by John T Humphrey, pub 1993, page 247, there is a Philip KLEIN bapt on 6/17/1764, s/o Michel and Catharina, at St Paul's Lutheran aka New Goshenhoppen Lutheran, in Upper Hanover. He could be your Philip, father of Benjamin. Marriages at Christ/Mertz Lutheran Church, Rockland Twp: Michael KLEIN, s/o Moritz to Catharine Schufert, d/o Joh. George, in Jun 1750. [Source: Vol 2 of Berks Co Marriages, pub 1987 by HP Publications] Tumble, tumble with these possibilities! Can you please tell me if you have the following Benjamin Klein/Kline listed at St. Paul’s Smoke Union Church, Windsor Twp. in the book you have? Benjamin Klein/Kline b. Jan 21 1791 son of Philip Klein/Kline and Elisabeth. (He is not the one below below who is son of Philip, Jr. and Catharina). From what I can find, whether right or wrong I do not know, this Philip and Elizabeth had the following children: John, Mary, Samuel, Elizabeth b. 1787, Philip b. 1788, Israel b. 1803, Daniel b. 1804, Solomon and this Benjamin b. 1791 (I hope!) I think the brick wall is coming tumbling down. Well, either it’s coming down or I am finally going crazy!! Thank you. Elaine Sharp Sacramento CA ________________________________
